Lantier

Lantier is not one individual's birth name but the hereditary title of the leader of Eclipse, once the West Continent's strongest assassination organization. The twenty-fifth bearer became a legendary assassin whose corpse was later made into a death knight, while Faker follows a separate line of succession through Eclipse's surviving techniques. References to those two Lantiers therefore describe distinct bearers, not one continuous person. (Chapters 404, 1272, 1277, 1281, 1332, 1425, 1446, 1488, and 1557)

Biography

Recurring role and later consequences

The twenty-fifth Lantier becomes so feared that a title designed to preserve anonymity is mistaken for a personal name. That fame damages Eclipse: public attention makes clients reluctant to employ a secret organization, weakens its mystique, and contributes to internal collapse even after the legendary bearer retires. Following his death, Pagma turns the corpse into a death knight. Grid encounters that undead legendary assassin in the Behen Archipelago, where its ability to deny its own presence and create deceptive attack paths makes it a lethal guardian rather than the living ruler of Eclipse. (Chapters 404–405, 666, and 1272)

The living succession continues independently. By the thirty-second bearer, Eclipse has lost much of its inherited technique; his disciples Kasim and Doran each learn only part of it, and rebels led by Bain drive their master out. Kasim later teaches Faker Lantier's Methods and explains that mastery brings both qualification for the title and a duty to understand Eclipse. When Faker traces the organization to the imperial underworld, he defeats Bain's incomplete imitation with superior shadow control and techniques adapted through Kasim, allowing the title to be renewed through a legitimate technical lineage rather than through the twenty-fifth bearer's undead body. (Chapters 509, 1272, 1277, 1279, and 1281)

The legendary corpse follows a separate afterlife under Agnus. Agnus acquires and cultivates the death knight after challenging the Behen Archipelago, spending years restoring its skills while contending with an ego that increasingly resists control. This undead Lantier fights Jishuka, Marbas, and the Overgeared forces, but repeated destruction and summoning do not make it the current Eclipse leader. By contrast, Faker is called Lantier while operating through shadows beside Grid's allies; their parallel appearances preserve the distinction between a controlled relic of the famous bearer and a living successor who has advanced the title's art. (Chapters 1052, 1277, 1332, 1425, 1446, 1488, 1490, 1539, and 1557)

Appearance and personality

The twenty-fifth bearer's death knight appears as a skeleton in a black cloak with aquamarine light burning in its eye sockets and a dagger in hand. Its body carries the stripped-down image of an assassin whose identity has been reduced to function and technique. Faker does not share that body or appearance; he is a living player who bears the title through succession and continues to use his own human form. (Chapters 404–405, 1272, and 1425)

Because Lantier is a title, no single personality applies to every bearer. The legendary twenty-fifth is remembered through overwhelming skill and the unintended damage caused by fame, Bain through ambition and illegitimate self-reconstruction, and Faker through reserve, discipline, and loyalty to his teacher's lineage. The death knight's returning ego also shows that even the corpse is not a neutral technique package, since greater recovery of its former self increases its resistance to Agnus's domination. (Chapters 1272, 1281, 1490, and 1557)

Abilities, classes, and skills

Lantier's Methods

Lantier's Methods are Eclipse's inherited assassination arts. Their highest expression does more than conceal the user: the twenty-fifth bearer can deny the perception of his existence, combine false movements with lethal surprise attacks, and move through darkness before a target can establish a defense. The tradition also includes shadow movement, body techniques, and Lantier's Poison. Its decline demonstrates that the title alone does not confer mastery; records, instruction, talent, and personal reinterpretation determine how much of the art a bearer can use. (Chapters 404–405, 509, 1272, and 1281)

Divergent bearers

Faker's form of the succession emphasizes extensive shadow control. He turns shadows into soldiers, moves allies through them, and integrates Kasim's innovations with the inherited methods, eventually surpassing Bain's attempt to reconstruct the art alone. The undead twenty-fifth retains legendary assassination instincts and can grow by recovering levels and techniques, but summoning consumes Agnus's domination and the returning ego makes control increasingly unstable. These powers belong to different bearers and should not be combined into a single ability set. (Chapters 1272, 1281, 1425, 1446, 1488, 1490, and 1557)

Relationships

  • Faker: Faker learns Lantier's Methods from Kasim, defeats Bain's incomplete claim, and becomes the living bearer who develops the title through advanced shadow techniques. (Chapters 1272, 1277, 1279, 1281, 1425, and 1446)
  • Pagma: Pagma makes the twenty-fifth Lantier's corpse into a death knight, preserving the famous bearer's combat arts while severing that undead existence from Eclipse's living succession. (Chapters 404–405)
  • Agnus: Agnus takes control of the legendary death knight and tries to restore its former power. Growth makes the summon stronger but also more expensive and resistant as its ego returns. (Chapters 1052, 1277, 1488, 1490, 1539, and 1557)
  • Grid: Grid first confronts the undead bearer as a Behen guardian and later fights alongside Faker, the living Lantier, making the two branches of the title's history visible around the same central ally. (Chapters 404–405, 666, 1332, and 1446)
