Doran

Doran is an assassin serving Duke Steim's household who recruits Grid for the rescue of the duke's abducted daughter, Irene. His speed and assassination skills carry the pair through the Yatan Temple, while his refusal to abandon Irene after being defeated turns the rescue into a fatal sacrifice whose memory continues to connect Grid, Irene, and Kasim. (Chapters 5–9 and 510)

Biography

Recurring role and later consequences

Doran approaches Grid while desperately seeking help to rescue Irene from the Yatan Temple. Grid repeatedly refuses because the mission sounds suicidal, but Doran persists, mistakes his resistance for hidden courage, and finally triggers the quest after Grid attacks a believer. Once inside the temple, Doran assumes the actual burden of the assault: he cuts through the guards at great speed and prioritizes interrupting the chanters whose curses and poison can overwhelm him. Grid's role is limited, but his presence gives Doran the narrow opportunity he needs to reach Irene. (Chapters 5–6)

Yura blocks their escape and recognizes Doran as a third-advancement NPC dangerous enough to demand her full attention. Grid briefly holds her back, allowing Doran to use him as a foothold and attack, but Doran is already exhausted by the temple battle. Yura ultimately subdues him after a difficult exchange. Doran nevertheless survives the subsequent destruction long enough to crawl from the ruins carrying Irene, place his protective ring in her care, and die after completing the rescue. His success therefore comes from persistence after defeat rather than from winning the duel. (Chapters 6–9)

Doran's death remains consequential because Irene knows Grid as the person who helped him save her, strengthening the trust behind Grid's later place in Duke Steim's family. Grid also remembers Doran as evidence that the quest could not have succeeded through his own limited strength. Much later, Kasim explains his past relationship with Doran while recounting how he came to observe Grid, protect Irene and Lord, and become Lord's teacher. Doran's rescue thus survives as part of the personal history joining the Steim household to Grid and Kasim. (Chapters 8, 91, and 510)

Appearance and personality

Doran is shown wearing leather armor suited to an assassin and fighting with two daggers and concealed weapons. The corpus does not establish a stable description of his face or build. His speed is the most consistent visual feature: he crosses the temple faster than Grid can properly follow and moves among the believers before they can complete their spells. (Chapter 6)

He is loyal, urgent, and extraordinarily persistent. His desperation makes him idealize Grid's reluctance as bravery and repeatedly ask for aid even when the refusal appears final. Once the rescue begins, however, his judgment is practical: he identifies the enemy casters as the greatest threat and accepts Grid's limited intervention as the opening he needs. Defeat and mortal injury do not change his priority, and he spends his remaining strength delivering Irene to safety rather than preserving himself. (Chapters 5–9)

Abilities, classes, and skills

Doran is a third-advancement assassin whose speed, dual-dagger technique, and hidden weapons make him overwhelmingly strong against the ordinary Yatan believers in the temple. He moves directly through their formation and attacks the chanters first, interrupting spells before curses and poison can accumulate. His mobility also lets him improvise around Grid, using him as a step from which to launch an attack on Yura. (Chapters 6–7)

His equipment provides resistance to curses and poison, but not complete immunity. Repeated exposure accumulates damage, and the effort of clearing the temple leaves him unable to fight Yura at full strength. Yura's ability to survive and counter his assault demonstrates the limit of his assassination kit against a comparably exceptional opponent in a prolonged engagement. Even so, Grid judges the rescue impossible without Doran's power, and Doran's final endurance lets him carry Irene out after the battle has already left him fatally wounded. (Chapters 6–9)

Relationships

  • Irene: Rescuing Duke Steim's daughter is Doran's overriding goal. He continues after exhaustion and defeat, carries her from the destroyed temple, and entrusts his protective ring to her before dying.
  • Grid: Doran recruits Grid despite repeated refusals and treats his presence as essential support. Grid later recognizes that Doran supplied the strength that made the rescue possible, while Irene remembers Grid through his assistance to Doran.
  • Yura: Yura is the principal obstacle between Doran and escape from the temple. She regards him as a serious third-advancement threat but eventually defeats him after his earlier battles have depleted him.
  • Duke Steim: Doran serves the duke's household and risks his life to recover Steim's abducted daughter, placing duty to that family above his survival.
  • Kasim: Kasim's past relationship with Doran forms part of the history he later reveals to Grid. That connection precedes Kasim's protection of Irene and Lord and his role as Lord's teacher.
