Bondre
Bondre is a French representative, the master of the Ice Flower Guild, and an elite Ice Mystic whose early reputation rests on defeating other leading players without a recorded loss. His confidence is repeatedly broken by opponents who overcome his carefully prepared ice control, but those defeats also make him train neglected defensive skills, reconsider old grudges, and eventually cooperate with rivals when the yangbans exploit him. (Chapters 180–181 and 1207–1208)
Biography
Recurring role and later consequences
Bondre enters the first National Competition as France's representative and the eleventh-ranked player. Having already defeated prominent competitors such as Hurent and Yura, he treats Grid's rapid victory over Hurent as impressive rather than threatening because he expects his Ice Mystic's terrain control and restraint to disrupt sword dances. Grid instead attacks from range, breaks his barrier, and defeats him in four seconds. The loss overturns Bondre's “undefeated” image and makes Grid the opponent against whom he measures his future growth. (Chapters 180–181)
That fixation shapes Bondre's next major conflicts. During the Seven Guilds' invasion of Reidan, he reveals that Ice Dragon's Fury was prepared for Grid, only for Faker to evade it and kill him after dismantling the Ice Flower formation. Before the second National Competition, Bondre abandons the usual long-range habits of a magician and repeatedly takes attacks so he can raise Ice Shield specifically for a rematch with Grid. The preparation lets him resist longer and cover France's retreat, but Grid breaks the shield and reflects Ice Dragon's Fury. Bondre acknowledges the gap between them, and the accumulated failures eventually help push Ice Flower out of the declining Seven Guilds and toward Ares. (Chapters 248, 411–412, and 524)
As a Valhalla soldier, Bondre is ordered to combine Frozen Ice with Absolute Zero to suppress the Black Tortoise, unaware that the yangbans are using him. Learning the truth costs him levels but also gives him the Real Myth quest, and his refusal to be discarded drives him to fight Areum even after exhaustion leaves him physically overmatched. Grid saves him and asks for his aid; Bondre's perfected double casting freezes the yangbans and creates the opening Grid needs. After Hwang Gildong secures the jewel, Bondre chooses to keep helping despite having completed his own quest, framing the decision as repayment while his ice webs continue restricting the surviving enemies. (Chapters 1205 and 1207–1208)
Appearance and personality
The corpus gives Bondre no stable facial or bodily description. In combat, his visual identity instead comes from the environment he creates: frozen ground, ice barriers, immense pillars, and spiderweb-like strands surround him. His expressions are often conspicuous—his face reddens when Faker ignores him, while exhaustion and depleted mana later leave him pale and trembling. (Chapters 248 and 1208)
Bondre is proud, competitive, and quick to interpret a rival's success as a personal challenge. Early confidence becomes anger when Grid or Faker defeats the plans he considers decisive, yet he does not protect that pride by surrendering. He studies why he lost, trains an unfashionable defensive style, and accepts that superior control rather than luck caused his defeats. His later conduct retains the grumbling rivalry but adds self-awareness: he recognizes that permanent resentment would be shameful, refuses the yangbans' attempt to use and discard him, and repays Grid even when no quest reward requires it. (Chapters 412, 1122, and 1207–1208)
Abilities, classes, and skills
As an Ice Mystic, Bondre specializes in altering terrain, slowing movement, restraining targets, and controlling space. Ice Field freezes a broad area around him; his ordinary attacks can inflict cold and slowing effects; and physical ice prisons or Ice Spider Webs can impede opponents through their material form rather than relying only on a status ailment. His magic is stronger and faster near water, making battlefield conditions especially important to his effectiveness. (Chapters 180–181)
Absolute Zero is his defining high-cost spell. At an early level it freezes a target, inflicts fixed damage, consumes half his current mana, and requires a lengthy cast and cooldown. Bondre later expands its reach by double-casting it with Frozen Ice, freezing every target inside the larger spell's domain. The combination can restrain yangbans, but repeated casting drains him to collapse, so it functions as a decisive control measure rather than a sustainable attack rotation. (Chapters 180, 1205, and 1207)
His offensive arsenal includes Ice Dragon's Fury, an S-grade spell that sends six giant ice pillars at a target from several directions. Its power, speed, and area threaten agile opponents, but its heavy mana demand and visible attack pattern allow sufficiently skilled enemies to evade or reverse it. Bondre also develops Ice Shield to an unusually high level by deliberately taking attacks: the shield absorbs damage, raises physical and magical defense, and reflects part of an incoming attack, though Grid's force still exceeds its capacity. (Chapters 248 and 412)
Relationships
- Grid: Grid first destroys Bondre's undefeated confidence and becomes the standard around which he rebuilds his defense. Their rivalry remains abrasive, but Grid's rescue and straightforward request for help let Bondre convert resentment into cooperation and repayment.
- Faker: Faker destroys the Ice Flower invasion force and defeats Bondre despite Ice Dragon's Fury and layered restraints. Bondre later accepts that the outcome reflected his own arrogance and Faker's skill.
- Ares: Bondre leads Ice Flower away from the Seven Guilds intending to join Ares, whom he regards as a hidden ranker comparable to Grid. He later serves in Ares's Valhalla army while insisting that the affiliation has not changed his personality.
- Hwang Gildong: Hwang Gildong's seizure of the Black Tortoise Jewel clears Bondre's Real Myth quest and removes his formal reason to keep fighting. Bondre's decision to remain afterward makes his aid a voluntary debt to Grid rather than simple quest compliance.
- Bubat: Bondre's ice webs and Bubat's grappling combine with Grid's attacks to isolate and defeat injured yangbans during the Black Tortoise battle.
