Berith
Berith is the 22nd Great Demon, a ruler whose lies alter recognized reality and whose alchemy converts the surrounding world into weapons or flesh. His long advance across the continent culminates in a raid where Grid, imperial forces, and rival players must combine abilities that can answer different parts of his power; his soul is ultimately destroyed, preventing his return as a great demon. (Chapters 1019, 1043–1053, and 1055)
Biography
Recurring role and later consequences
Berith first demonstrates that ordinary battlefield assumptions cannot be trusted around him. Bound by the terms of his summoning, he answers truthfully when required, yet outside that constraint his declarations manipulate the system itself: he can appear as an ally, invalidate attacks aimed at enemies, and then reverse the designation. During an eighty-one-day march, his demonic army destroys Rotemon and advances toward Haken, while his alchemy turns dust and terrain into metal storms. The destruction forces multiple kingdoms and powers to confront him before his march can continue. (Chapters 1019, 1036–1037, and 1043–1045)
At the raid, no single counter is sufficient. Berith restores a severed arm by transmuting blood through bone, flesh, and skin, then uses falsehood to strip Grid of system-recognized classes, titles, and skills. The attack instead exposes a limit in Berith's understanding: Grid's self-created Magic Swordsman of the Epics survives the erasure and grows through a new epic. Berith later declares himself invincible, but Grid's newly authored swordsmanship rejects that imposed reality, while Basara's red energy weakens his alchemy and the other participants deny him the time needed to reverse the battle. (Chapters 1044–1053)
Berith's final distortion deprives most humans of their tools, leaving exceptions such as Kraugel and Piaro able to keep fighting through their particular statuses and methods. Zibal, Yura, and the remaining coalition press the advantage, and the raid ends with Berith's soul destroyed rather than returned to Hell. His powers nevertheless leave a legacy: an artifact made from his skin reproduces perfect disguises through lies and distortion, and a later ruler of the 22nd Hell proves far less threatening because he cannot deceive reality with Berith's authority. (Chapters 1053, 1055, 1080, 1137, and 1428)
Appearance and personality
Berith has an elongated, grotesque torso lined with dozens of ribs and rides a diseased-looking horse. A corroded golden crown sits above a body whose skin repeatedly changes between the appearance of raw meat, decay, and blue flesh. The regal symbols therefore do not conceal corruption; they make his claim to authority appear physically diseased. (Chapter 1019)
He is theatrical, cruel, and confident that language itself gives him control over an encounter. Berith exploits the distinction between literal truth and useful deception, allowing opponents to hear accurate statements only when an oath compels him. His arrogance is supported by enormous innate power, but it also leaves him without the learned combat technique needed to recover once coordinated attacks seize the momentum. (Chapters 1019, 1048–1053)
Abilities, classes, and skills
Lies and reality distortion
Berith's defining authority makes declared falsehood temporarily function as reality. He can alter whether the system recognizes someone as an ally, remove classes and titles, impose invincibility on himself, or state that humans cannot use tools. The distortion is not treated as a conventional status ailment, so ordinary abnormal-status resistance does not automatically stop it. It is still conditional rather than omnipotent: each application has limits, exceptional identities can resist or replace what is erased, and a power born directly from Grid's own epic can contradict Berith's lie. (Chapters 1019 and 1048–1053)
Ultimate alchemy and regeneration
Berith converts air, earth, dust, wounds, and bodies into metal. The same principle produces vast projectiles and storms, repairs his damaged body layer by layer, and threatens instant death when applied directly to a victim. In the domain of the 22nd Hell, his statistics rise while humans suffer reduced skill, magic, defense, and recovery performance. These advantages make attrition favorable to him, but Basara's red energy can suppress the alchemical conversions, and Berith's reliance on innate authority leaves him vulnerable when varied attackers maintain a pincer assault he lacks the technique to escape. (Chapters 1044–1053)
Relationships
- Grid: Berith tries to erase Grid's accumulated identity, but the attempt awakens a class and epic authored by Grid himself. Grid's new swordsmanship then becomes a direct answer to Berith's claimed invincibility. (Chapters 1048–1053)
- Kraugel: Kraugel severs Berith's arm and later remains able to use a weapon when Berith denies tools to humans, making the Sword Saint one of the raid's persistent exceptions. (Chapters 1044 and 1053)
- Zibal: Zibal's magic machine supplies force that Berith cannot easily classify under his restrictions, helping the coalition maintain pressure during the final phase. (Chapter 1053)
- Agnus: Agnus intervenes during the raid and buys Berith time despite opposing many of the human participants, complicating what would otherwise have been Berith's immediate collapse under their combined assault. (Chapter 1053)
