Dan Baekhyun

Dan Baekhyun is a prince of the North Sea Ice Palace whose escape from a buried spirit-beast disaster brings Chun Yeowun north. Though the palace's Divine Object rejects him, Yeowun makes him a disciple and returns the throne to his bloodline.

Biography

The underground betrayal

Baekhyun accompanies the Ice Palace king and three elders into a sealed underground complex, ostensibly to recover the lost Adularia and sacred object. Blade God Six Martial Clan specialists use bombs to breach the ancient ice, then reveal their true purpose when the frozen Dragon Turtle is found. The three elders betray and kill Baekhyun's father, while the intruders' Extreme Art leaves Baekhyun grievously wounded. The Dragon Turtle awakens amid another explosion, electrocuting attackers whose linked energy cannot scratch its scales. Baekhyun escapes only because an iron-masked man—later identified with Chun Inji—stabs one head in the eye, gives him an identity slate, and orders him to find the current Chun Ma. (Chapters 402–405)

Envoy and return north

Baekhyun reaches the new Demonic Academy branch and nervously appeals to Yeowun as Chun Ma of the Sky Demon Order. The wound on his torso confirms the Blade God Six Martial Clan's involvement, while Chun Inji's slate gives the Demonic Cult a personal reason to investigate. Baekhyun guides the party across the Great Plains and supplies intelligence about the Dragon Turtle's scale armor, lightning, and qi-related attacks, allowing Nano to prepare countermeasures before the underground battle. Despite fear before the barbarian army and spirit beast, he completes the mission for which he was spared. (Chapters 402–416)

Palace succession

After the Dragon Turtle falls, the Ice Palace divides over succession. Baekhyun's supporters appeal to bloodline legitimacy, while his uncle Dan Jucheon claims the strength needed to rule. Baekhyun attempts to seize the golden Ice Cold Staff. Its cold freezes his right hand and arm even after he activates the fifth level of the Divine Palm of the Ice God, proving that Dan blood alone cannot compel a Divine Object that has already chosen Yeowun. Dan Jucheon is rejected as well, and Yeowun's effortless acceptance by the staff makes the palace acknowledge him. (Chapters 429–431)

Yeowun avoids leaving a foreign occupation behind. He takes Baekhyun as a formal disciple, promises to transmit the Ice Cold of Heaven, and then abdicates the palace kingship in his favor. This keeps authority with the royal bloodline while binding the new king to the Demonic Cult through discipleship. Baekhyun accepts the arrangement, begins lessons, and oversees reconstruction after Yeowun freezes the flooded ruins. By Chapter 438 he hosts his master as king and invites him to remain, though Yeowun must continue toward Liaoning. (Chapters 432–438)

Appearance and personality

Baekhyun is a young man whose upper body bears the severe scars of the Extreme Art used during his escape. Activating his ice art turns his hair silver. He begins nervous before Yeowun and visibly frightened by threats beyond his experience, but he is not passive: wounded and alone, he carries the slate across regions, recounts the palace betrayal, and returns to face the succession struggle. His inability to command the staff exposes limited cultivation, not a lack of loyalty or legitimacy.

Martial arts and abilities

  • Divine Palm of the Ice God, fifth level: Baekhyun has reached the art's fifth stage. It circulates cold qi through the body and turns his hair silver when activated. He uses it defensively against the Ice Cold Staff's extreme cold, but the fifth level cannot conquer or neutralize a Divine Object that rejects him; his arm freezes and he is thrown back. (Chapter 431)
  • Ice Cold of Heaven instruction: After taking Baekhyun as a disciple, Yeowun begins teaching him the recovered supreme ice technique. The art is capable of generating cold qi on a scale far beyond Baekhyun's existing palm method, as shown by Yeowun freezing the palace's flooded crater. The corpus confirms Baekhyun receives lessons but does not show him independently reproducing Yeowun's large-scale feats. (Chapters 432–438)
  • Northern and spirit-beast knowledge: Baekhyun understands the Dragon Turtle's four heads, lightning, durable scales, and qi behavior from direct survival. His explanation gives Yeowun and Nano usable preparation data. This is intelligence and eyewitness expertise, not control over the beast. (Chapters 405 and 416)
  • Survival and diplomacy: He escapes the collapsing underground while suffering a near-fatal Blade God wound, carries Chun Inji's slate, crosses into Jianghu, and persuades a suspicious Demonic Cult party to hear him. His value as an envoy comes from combining royal identity, evidence, and a coherent account under pressure. (Chapters 402–405)
  • Kingship: Baekhyun's later authority derives from Yeowun's recognized control of the Divine Object, the surviving royal bloodline, and acceptance by palace officials. It is political legitimacy, not an instantaneous increase in martial level.

Relationships

  • Chun Yeowun: Baekhyun recruits him as an ally, becomes his disciple, and receives the throne from him.
  • Dan Jucheon: His uncle and rival claimant, later subordinated within the new arrangement.
  • Chun Inji: Saves Baekhyun underground and entrusts him with the identity slate that directs him to Chun Ma.
  • His father: The former Ice Palace king, killed through the three elders' betrayal.

Items

  • Ice Cold Staff: The palace's Divine Object. It rejects Baekhyun and freezes his arm because it has already chosen Yeowun.
  • Chun Inji's identity slate: Proof carried from the underground complex to the Demonic Cult; it authenticates Baekhyun's mission and connects the crisis to Yeowun's missing ancestor.
