Chun Yujong

Chun Yujong is the Lord of the Demonic Cult and father of Chun Yeowun. A formidable martial authority, he presides over an institution divided by the six clans and becomes a central obstacle and predecessor in Yeowun's rise.

Biography

Winning a divided throne

Chun Yujong wins the Demonic Cult's succession contest after his own academy generation by killing most of the other princes and cutting off the arm of his brother Chun Yujing. Although he gains the throne, he is initially weaker than the senior martial artists around him and trains obsessively to make his authority real. He swears his life to the cult and takes wives from the six great clans as part of the political structure expected of a Lord, but feels no affection for those marriages. (Chapters 244–246)

The exception is Hwa Yun, a servant outside the six-clan system. Yujong falls in love with her and marries her despite the opposition implicit in his existing alliances, keeping her in a residence outside the palace. Their son, Yeowun, therefore embodies both the Lord's only loving marriage and a threat to the succession order controlled by the six clans. This private attachment becomes the central vulnerability behind decisions that later appear merely cold or ambitious. (Chapters 244–246)

War, Hwa Yun, and the South Demon Lord

When Chun Inji disappears and Hang Yen invades, Yujong goes to war while Hwa Yun is already gravely ill. At the Sawon Plains he faces Hang Yen while only at the end stage of the superior-master level, below his opponent's entry-stage supreme mastery. Yujong reverses the contest by using the Blood God's Reversion Art, a forbidden method that violently increases his power. The victory earns him recognition as one of Wulin's Five Strongs and the title South Demon Lord, but the technique leaves him trapped in murderous hallucinations for roughly a month. (Chapters 244–246 and 314)

Hwa Yun is poisoned and dies while he is incapacitated. Yujong does not attend her funeral because the Reversion Art has left him unable to distinguish reality from visions, and he fears killing his own child if he goes near Yeowun in that state. Once he recovers, he wants to punish the six-clan wives and the powers he suspects, but understands that open retaliation could split the cult in civil war. He instead decides to use Yeowun as bait to draw out hostile clans while arranging covert protection around him. Calling his son a “chess piece” becomes part strategy and part emotional armor: a way to deny the resemblance to Hwa Yun that makes his detachment difficult to maintain. (Chapters 244–247)

The academy and covert protection

At the academy opening, Yujong appears in black silk marked with the character for “Sky.” His quiet voice carries across a gathering of a thousand cadets, and his oppressive presence makes many of them struggle to meet his gaze. He ends his address abruptly when Yeowun reminds him too strongly of Hwa Yun. Behind the public distance, Yujong uses Marakim to remove guards so Submeng can reach and teach his son, and he permits Yeowun's precarious position to expose enemies such as the Great Sword Martial clan. The protection is real, but so is the danger created by a strategy that keeps Yeowun uninformed and expendable in appearance. (Chapters 8 and 244–247)

As Yeowun returns from the academy with his own strength and faction, Yujong's balancing strategy becomes harder to distinguish from hostility. He designates Yeowun crown prince but delays the public transfer of authority, calculates how rival clans can restrain one another, and treats his son's rapid growth as both useful and threatening. After the Blade God clan's attack, he suppresses and redirects evidence concerning Yulin in an attempt to control the political consequences. Yeowun exposes the manipulation, and gradually concludes that the Lord is balancing pieces around the throne rather than acting as a dependable ally. (Chapters 188–212)

The true sword and collapse

Yujong attempts to force Marakim to support a false account and relies on the poison parasite implanted in the Great Guardian, only to learn that Yeowun has already removed it. When Marakim's testimony exposes the truth, Yujong attacks rather than surrender control of the succession. The crisis peaks when Yeowun presents the genuine Sky Demon Sword. Yujong has inherited and carried a counterfeit as Lord; the true weapon not only validates Yeowun's direct connection to Chun Ma but burns and rejects Yujong when he tries to handle or destroy it. (Chapters 233–237)

The trauma and pressure worsen the hallucinations left by the Blood God's Reversion Art. A vision of his dead brother Chun Yujing speaks to his obsession with “balance” and distorts his judgment. Yujong tries to invoke the Reversion Art again despite his physician's warning, but Yeowun interrupts the reversed energy flow with internal force and an electric shock. The intervention prevents the immediate attack but leaves Yujong with severe heart damage and a prolonged coma. Only afterward does Marakim explain to Yeowun that the apparently indifferent Lord had secretly protected him for years. (Chapters 244–252)

Former Lord and recovery

Yujong remains unconscious for months while Yeowun assumes the lordship and seeks the Godly Doctor's aid. When he wakes, his memories are fragmented and his body is weak. Learning that Hwa Yun's son has become Lord and reached the Divine Master level produces pride and exhilaration alongside the awkwardness of addressing his own child as the current ruler. He no longer holds the throne, but the recovery begins to release him from the political identity through which he had tried to suppress grief. (Chapters 252, 400)

By the later chapters he receives daily treatment and rebuilds his internal energy. News that Chun Inji is alive gives him another connection to the family history behind the succession, while he privately judges Yeowun to have become a better Lord than he was. His cultivation remains damaged, yet his senses are sharp enough to notice surveillance, and even an intruder using future technology to conceal sight and emitted energy cannot pass wholly unnoticed by Yujong and Yeowun. Appearance and personality

Yujong wears black silk bearing the “Sky” character during the academy ceremony. His sharp gaze, controlled speech, and overwhelming presence create the impression of an emperor who expects obedience. Even a quiet statement carries across a vast assembly through cultivated energy.

That control conceals unresolved grief and fear. He loves Hwa Yun but responds to her death by burying affection beneath strategy, repeatedly calling their son a piece on a board. He is devoted to preserving the Demonic Cult and perceptive about the civil war the six clans could cause, yet pride and the lingering effects of a forbidden art turn caution into manipulation. The genuine Sky Demon Sword visibly shatters his composure. After waking from his coma, he is physically diminished and less secure in his authority, but more willing to recognize Yeowun's achievement.

Cultivation and the Five Strongs

Yujong begins his lordship below the senior masters whose obedience he must command, then trains until he reaches the end stage of the superior-master level. During the war with Hang Yen, the temporary increase from the Blood God's Reversion Art lets him overcome an entry-stage supreme master. That victory establishes him among Wulin's Five Strongs as the South Demon Lord. By the later succession conflict he is himself described at the entry stage of the supreme-master level, though accumulated internal injuries and repeated forbidden-art use have compromised his health. (Chapters 209, 244–246, and 314)

His cultivated presence is a functional expression of that power. At the academy, he makes a thousand cadets feel suffocated while carrying his voice over the entire assembly without shouting. Even after heart damage, coma, and incomplete recovery reduce the energy available to him, his perception remains refined enough to detect an observer concealed by future stealth technology. The feat demonstrates sensitivity rather than restored combat capacity; the later corpus still presents him as undergoing treatment. (Chapters 8, 438, and 471)

Sword art and force control

As a Demonic Cult Lord, Yujong practices the inherited Sword Art of the Sky Demon and can express the sword and force qi expected of a top martial artist. The version passed through the succession line is incomplete, however. His possession of the Lord's sword and techniques does not give him the founder's full inheritance, a distinction made decisive when Yeowun reconstructs the true art and returns with Chun Ma's genuine weapon. Yujong remains a formidable swordsman, but the story explicitly separates institutional inheritance from complete mastery. (Chapters 133 and 233–237)

Blood God's Reversion Art

The Blood God's Reversion Art reverses the normal flow of internal energy and forces the user's body into a violently amplified state. It lets Yujong bridge a cultivation gap against Hang Yen, increasing his power enough to change the outcome at the Sawon Plains. The boost is temporary and the version he uses is incomplete. Its cost includes loss of rational control, persistent visions, internal injury, and a prolonged period in which he may attack people he loves while mistaking them for enemies. (Chapters 244–246)

Repeated use compounds the damage. Years after the first battle, Yujong still experiences a hallucination of Chun Yujing that influences his political judgment. When he attempts the art again, Yeowun stops the reversed circulation before the transformation can proceed, but the disrupted flow and Yujong's existing condition leave his heart severely damaged and send him into a months-long coma. The art is therefore a desperate power multiplier, not a stable higher realm or a technique he can employ without consequence. (Chapters 246, 252, and 400)

Rule and political strategy

Yujong's non-combat strength is his understanding of factional balance. He uses formal marriages, succession rivalry, covert protection, exile, planted vulnerability, and control of information to keep the six clans from uniting against the throne. He can preserve useful people for a later role and arrange protection without publicly disclosing his objective. These methods delay civil war and expose conspirators, but they also isolate Yeowun, turn allies into pieces, and leave room for pride and hallucination to corrupt the strategy. His governance is effective enough to hold a divided cult together, yet its human cost is a principal cause of his fall. (Chapters 189–212, 244–247, and 260)

Relationships

• Chun Yeowun: His son, eventual crown prince, and successor; their relationship combines blood ties, rivalry, and the cult's succession struggle.
• Hwa Yun: The only wife Yujong loves and Yeowun's mother. Her poisoning and death shape both his covert protection of their son and his destructive refusal to express that attachment openly.
• Chun Inji: His missing father and predecessor. News of Inji's survival reaches Yujong during his recovery.
