Chun Jongsum

Chun Jongsum is the Poison Clan's prince and the fourth-ranked candidate for the Demonic Cult throne. His academy defeat destroys his martial future, but information he later sends to Chun Yeowun becomes politically decisive.

Biography

A poisoned inheritance

Chun Jongsum enters the academy as the Poison Clan's prince and fourth-ranked heir candidate. His hostility toward Chun Yeowun is connected to an older secret. As a child, Jongsum overheard his mother supply a slow poison to a veiled woman; Lady Hwa later died from the same substance. The resulting suspicion forced his grandfather Baek Oh from the elder seat and helped drive Jongsum's mother to death under stress. Jongsum blames Lady Hwa for his family's ruin and dreams of becoming Lord so he can identify and destroy the unknown buyer. (Chapters 8 and 51)

Jongsum is already arrogant enough to threaten members of his first test group, but Bakgi defeats him. Unable to accept the humiliation, he secretly gives Bakgi heavy daily doses of the same slow poison. The substance can enter through breathing during sleep and normally remains too subtle for pulse examination or meditation until fatal symptoms develop. Jongsum plans to finish Bakgi personally after advancing his Poison of Destruction. (Chapters 15, 44, and 47–49)

Yeowun's retaliation

Yeowun recognizes the poison's symptoms because they match his mother's death and brings Bakgi to Baek Jongmeng before the exposure becomes irreversible. He then confronts Jongsum while the prince is gathering poisonous herbs. Jongsum releases stored poison at close range and initially believes he has melted Yeowun's face, only to see Nano's emergency detoxification repair the damage. His usual advantage—an attack too hidden to detect—fails against a target able to analyze it internally. (Chapters 47–50)

Yeowun shatters Jongsum's bones and destroys his internal energy to prevent him from poisoning anyone again. Jongsum tries to bargain with the secret of Lady Hwa's murder, truthfully indicating that the ultimate culprit came from another clan while concealing his own mother's role as supplier. Because the Poison of Destruction uses internal energy to contain multiple poisons within his body, losing that control causes the stored mixture to poison Jongsum himself. A living witness

Jongsum returns to the Poison Clan with every bone shattered, his spinal cord damaged, and his internal energy gone. He cannot move from bed and initially has little more than continued biological survival. The defeat ends his academy candidacy and becomes a warning that drives some cadets away from Yeowun, while the Poison Clan focuses on revenge for its disabled prince and fallen elder. After prolonged recovery, Jongsum regains enough speech and control to act through another clan member. He sends Yeowun a letter revealing the red-veiled woman's approach to his mother and the connection behind Lady Hwa's poisoning. The information lets Yeowun identify Lady Mu as the organizer of his mother's death and understand the current kidnapping plot. Jongsum's motive is not presented as reconciliation; from his bed, he uses the enemy who crippled him to destroy the conspirator whose actions ruined his own mother. (Chapters 168–169)

Appearance and personality

Afterward he is nearly immobile and can speak only slowly. The disability does not eliminate his capacity for calculation. Poison of Destruction

Jongsum practices the Poison of Destruction, a nine-level system developed by repeatedly poisoning and curing one's own body. By the fourth level, a practitioner stores multiple poisons internally and uses cultivated energy to keep them contained until release. Jongsum has reached that stage and is training toward the fifth, where the art's power increases sharply. His master-level internal energy provides the control needed to carry the toxic mixture. He can discharge poison at close range strongly enough to melt exposed skin and damage qi. The system is dangerous to its user: when Yeowun destroys Jongsum's internal energy, the seven-poison mixture escapes control and spreads through his own body. Poison tolerance delays death but does not make him immune, and he survives only through needles, antidote pills, and a specifically prepared detoxifying medicine. Slow inhaled poison

Jongsum also uses the slow poison connected to Lady Hwa's death. He administers a high dose to Bakgi while the cadet sleeps, allowing it to enter through the lungs without contact or contaminated shared food. It remains undetectable through normal meditation and pulse checks; lung stress or diagnostic smoke can draw it into visible symptoms such as pallor and red spots. Untreated exposure eventually kills, while early detection allows a week-long antidote course. (Chapters 47–49)
