Rumper

Rumper Karn is an archaeologist and one of NIRV's three founders. His work on beast fossils helps create the Altered process, but the trauma of the early experiments and the Black Dragon Krad's influence lead him to distribute infected solution through the One Gang.

Biography

From Altered pioneer to infected conspirator

Rumper begins as a NIRV executive overseeing excavation sites and Retriever deployments alongside Rickle. He had been among the first archaeologists to discover beast fossils and helped turn that research into the Altered process. Years of witnessing failed human experiments damage him and his marriage, while Krad's lingering Shadow enters his mind through the infected material at his sites. Under that influence, Rumper secretly supplies Harvor and other clients with black infected solution, using the One Gang's network to spread it while concealing the operation from Rickle. (Chapters 741, 1019, 1047–1048, and 1127–1128)

Rickle tracks Rumper beneath the AFC stadium and confronts him. Rumper condemns the suffering behind the Altered project and claims that working with Harvor could reset its consequences, but Krad then takes overt control and binds Rickle with Shadow. Rickle cuts Rumper down rather than risk the Black Dragon's return. Briefly himself again, Rumper apologizes and warns that Krad's true target is connected to the Altered project before dying; the infected capsule he gave Harvor nevertheless triggers a wider Shadow crisis immediately afterward. Appearance and personality

Rumper is a large, muscular man with broad shoulders and orange hair swept along the middle; he later wears a white lab coat and has puffy hair protruding at the sides. He is a capable scientist carrying profound guilt and anger over NIRV's origins. His final apology and incomplete warning distinguish Rumper's own remorse from the confident cruelty Krad displays through him. (Chapters 741, 1019, and 1127–1129)

Powers and abilities

Rumper is explicitly human and not an Altered. His expertise lies in archaeology, fossil extraction, and the science behind Altered production. The supernatural abilities seen through his body belong to Krad's possession: Shadow can restrain targets, slow movement within its area, and corrupt infected beasts and Altereds, while Krad's consciousness persists wherever enough of that power survives. (Chapters 1019 and 1127–1128)

The possession is not personal mastery. Rumper's behavior and voice change when Krad surfaces, and Rickle's imitation black sword cuts through the Shadow and mortally wounds the human host. Removing or dispersing the Shadow ends Rumper's access to it, and his ordinary body cannot survive the resulting chest wound. (Chapters 1128–1129)

Relationships

• Rickle: Rickle co-founds NIRV with Rumper and once saves his wife, then kills him when Krad's possession threatens a new catastrophe.
• Harvor: Rumper supplies Harvor and the One Gang with infected solution and gives Harvor the capsule that releases concentrated Shadow power.
• Gary Dem: Rumper considers Gary as a Retriever in his first scene; his infected distribution later helps create the threat Gary faces at the AFC stadium.
