Nox
Nox is the leader of the Scavengers, the gang through which NIRV controls a Tier-4 mining city and its factories. He rules through subordinate gangs, manufactured Altereds, and fear, but his dependence on NIRV makes him disposable once the Phantom Brawl operation fails.
Biography
Controlling the city through NIRV's resources
Nox oversees the Scavengers' factories, school recruitment pipeline, and annual Phantom Brawl while NIRV supplies him with Altereds and experimental solutions. When Austin and the masked fighter later revealed as Vere disrupt a Scavenger operation, Nox has Vlad beaten and released as bait, then sends a newly created Altered squad to test the product and recapture the intruders. He treats the violence as routine management until Vlad returns as an infected Altered and attacks the Brawl, at which point Nox offers more solution as a reward and calls NIRV for rescue. (Chapters 716–725 and 738–740)
Revolt, failed escape, and execution
The attack exposes that Vere is one of Nox's daughters and that she became the Shadow Fighter partly to avenge her mother, whom Nox killed after discarding her. Nox tries to flee while his subordinates fight, attempts to overpower Vere in a narrow hallway, and denounces all five of his daughters when she confronts him. He escapes their duel only because the wider battle interrupts it, but is later knocked unconscious while trying to recover NIRV's remaining solution. When NIRV's retrievers restore control, they identify Nox as a failed figurehead; Kon kills him with a single Altered-strength blow and orders one of his surviving daughters to replace him. (Chapters 740–754)
Appearance and personality
Nox is a bald adult man with a snake tattoo running from his neck over his scalp. He presents himself as a paternal commander to useful subordinates, but becomes panicked and self-serving when the Scavengers lose control. His treatment of Vlad, Vere's mother, and his daughters shows possessiveness without familial loyalty, while his attempted escape confirms that he expects others to absorb the risks of his rule. (Chapters 716, 725, and 740–754)
Powers and abilities
Fighting skill
Nox is explicitly an ordinary human rather than an Altered. He can duck Vere's kick, counter with a body strike, throw a knife as a distraction, and land a punch in close quarters, explaining why he could rise above weaker gang members. His strength and technique remain human-scale: Vere overwhelms him once she establishes her rhythm, Elijah's transformed kick knocks him unconscious, and Kon's blow kills him instantly. (Chapters 743, 752, and 754)
Criminal organization
Nox coordinates factories, lower gangs, the Phantom Brawl, and the distribution of Altered solutions. That authority is borrowed from NIRV rather than independently secured. His strongest fighters are corporate gifts, his emergency response requires calling retrievers, and the corporation replaces him immediately after judging his performance a failure. (Chapters 716–725 and 740–754)
Relationships
- Vere: Vere is Nox's daughter and covert enemy. His killing of her mother drives her resistance, while his attempt to kill Vere and her sisters destroys any remaining familial claim between them. (Chapters 743–757)
- Vixen: Vixen is a NIRV-provided Altered who protects Nox and manages Scavenger enforcement. Nox values him as a powerful asset but abandons him once the Brawl collapses. (Chapters 716–743)
- Austin: Austin's defense of Vlad and the factory workers turns a local disturbance into the revolt that ends Nox's rule. Nox repeatedly underestimates him because he assumes his own Altereds and corporate backing are sufficient. (Chapters 714–754)
