Vere

Vere is one of Scavengers leader Nox's five daughters, the masked vigilante known as the Shadow Fighter, and later a core member of the Howlers. Although raised as part of Notsburg's ruling family, she turns against it after Nox murders her mother and the man her mother loved. She is a trained ordinary human rather than an Altered, relying on agility, timing, and technique to challenge the gang system that treats her and her sisters as property.

Biography

The Shadow Fighter and the Scavengers

Vere is publicly presented as the most beautiful and reserved of Nox's five daughters, but secretly moves through the schools as the Shadow Fighter. Her mother's death taught her that the Scavengers would not allow their women independent lives, and she responds by beating prospective gang recruits in the hope of disrupting Nox's pipeline. The campaign inconveniences the organization without changing it, leaving her frustrated but experienced. When she mistakes Austin for another school tyrant, she attacks him; their duel ends only when he learns her timing and pins her with superior Altered strength. The loss becomes an alliance because both want to rescue Vlad and dismantle the Scavengers. (Chapters 701–729)

At the Phantom Brawl, Vere blocks Nox's escape and reveals her identity after he pulls away her mask. The confrontation is personal—she wants him to see the daughter he dismissed defeat him—but it also exposes her limits. Her speed and accumulated fight experience let her knock him down, while the narrow hallway restricts her evasive movement and makes his attacks more dangerous. NIRV's retrieval force interrupts the wider victory, and Vere ultimately leaves Notsburg with the Howlers rather than taking over the structure she hated. With Nox dead and NIRV preparing to choose another sister as its contact, returning would mean hiding under the same pressures. She rejects Austin's offer of a quiet civilian life and asks to join the Howlers because she enjoys fighting and believes she can contribute. (Chapters 740–758)

A Howler and defender of Slough

Vere becomes part of the Howlers' core circle and remains especially close to Austin and Vlad. During later wars she supports the organization rather than seeking the solitary symbolism of her Shadow Fighter campaign; she watches for Austin during the Lupus battle, welcomes Gary, Kai, and Lupus back to Slough, and is instrumental with Vlad in holding the Howlers' laboratories during the final Glutton crisis. After the underworld system collapses, she and Austin open a high-performance mechanic shop, converting their partnership from survival and gang warfare into a chosen civilian future while continuing to train with the old pack. Appearance and personality

Vere is a young woman with long, straight black hair, large eyes, a toned build, and a small frame. As the Shadow Fighter she covers herself in black clothing and a balaclava; unmasked, she favors black boots, shorts, and a cropped top. She is guarded, proud of her ability to protect herself, and unwilling to be treated as fragile because she is a woman. Her enjoyment of fighting complicates her vigilantism: revenge begins the campaign, but she also genuinely values testing herself and later accepts disciplined work within a group. Powers and abilities

Human martial arts and evasive movement

Vere is explicitly treated as a non-Altered during her early fights. Her effectiveness comes from speed, flexibility, footwork, improvisation, and a refined sense of timing. She changes angles before an opponent can set, leans or flips away from strikes, targets balance and joints, and uses an attacker's momentum against them. She can chain kicks to the head, ribs, knees, and chin, catch a wrist into a painful lock, and improvise counters while moving. Her repeated school fights develop these qualities enough for Austin to learn better timing by studying her. (Chapters 701–717, 729, and 743)

Technique does not remove the physical limits of an ordinary human. Vere's blows barely damage Austin's enhanced body, one clean hit from him could be fatal, and he wins once he reads her pattern and uses his weight to pin her. A constrained hallway also reduces the space she needs to evade Nox. Later chapters establish her as a capable Howlers trainer and defender, but do not show her taking an Altered serum, learning Qi, or gaining a supernatural form. Relationships

• Austin: Vere first fights Austin, then trusts him because he shares her goal and treats her as capable. They continue as Howlers allies and eventually open a mechanic shop together. (Chapters 701–758 and 1846)
• Vlad: Vlad idolizes the Shadow Fighter before learning she is Nox's daughter. Vere helps Austin rescue him and later defends the Howlers' laboratories beside him. (Chapters 700–758 and 1820)
• Nox and the Scavengers: Nox's murder of Vere's mother and her partner turns Vere against her own family organization. Her Shadow Fighter identity is an attempt to erode his control from below before she confronts him directly. (Chapters 710–743)
• Gary Dem and the Howlers: Vere initially mistakes Kai for the leader, then formally swears loyalty to Gary. The group gives her a way to fight an abusive system without returning to Nox's model of control. (Chapters 757–758 and 1155–1846)
