Joy
Joy is a four-star Altered Hunter and the trusted field partner of her grandfather, Cooper. Ruin City's losses force her to confront both the limits of a hunter's rank and the hidden war for which the organization has been used.
Biography
Surviving the ruin of the Altered Hunters
Joy serves beside Cooper as an observer and field hunter during the campaign against the Lupus pack. After daytime attacks destroy multiple squads, her usual confidence gives way to shock as she reports that only the hunters gathered with her can be confirmed alive. In the Botanical Garden she nevertheless supports Cooper's cautious decision to await reinforcements, arguing that stars record kills rather than guaranteeing victory. Her judgment proves sound, but Cooper later sacrifices himself with illegal explosives to protect the group from Luzen. Joy wants immediate revenge, yet her own assessment—that she and the wounded survivors are too weak—leaves her unable to make his sacrifice produce the victory she wants. (Chapters 1168, 1220, 1290, 1300)
Cooper had raised Joy after Altereds killed her parents. Her outspoken hatred made her an outcast and target at school, so he taught her Hunter skills for self-defense; she chose to join the organization and accompany him as he aged. That history explains both her loyalty and her refusal to abandon Edvard's fight, though she eventually escapes with the other survivors. At Slough, after the Hunters are dissolved, she challenges Edvard over the revelation that vampires manipulated the organization into a war with werewolves. She remains alive among the displaced hunters, but without Cooper or the institution that shaped her life. (Chapters 1300, 1310–1312, 1331)
Appearance and personality
The corpus does not give Joy a detailed physical description. She is normally confident and sometimes cocky, but the devastation in Ruin City leaves her subdued. She can be sharp-tempered when allies appear reckless, yet her caution is practical rather than cowardly; grief briefly pushes her toward a fight she knows she cannot win. (Chapters 1220, 1290, 1300)
Powers and abilities
Joy is a trained human Hunter, not a demonstrated Altered or supernatural being. Her four stars signify that she has killed the required number of Altereds, not that she is invulnerable or necessarily stronger than every lower-ranked opponent. She uses a sword and Hunter observation equipment, including binoculars and camera feeds, and can identify threats and coordinate movement through monitored terrain. Her principal limitation is the same one she articulates herself: experience and equipment do not bridge every difference in raw power, leaving her unable to challenge Luzen or Lupus directly. (Chapters 1168, 1290, 1300, 1302)

- Blake: Joy questions his alliance with werewolves during the retreat, while Blake's refusal to spend more family blood forces her to face the cost of continuing.
