Cooper
Cooper is one of the Altered Hunters' oldest five-star members, a field commander whose surveillance network makes him the eyes and ears of the Ruin City campaign. He is also Joy's grandfather and trainer. His final choice uses equipment prepared for a worst-case mission to pull Luzen away from wounded hunters, sacrificing himself even though the explosion fails to kill the Ironfang.
Biography
Command, surveillance, and retreat in Ruin City
Cooper leads roughly thirty hunters from a rooftop command post and is trusted to replace Edvard if the main commander falls. Cameras placed across Ruin City, live screens, and his own unaided observation let him identify Lupus among a hidden squad and order every team to abort before the Alpha can trap more of them. After a daylight ambush devastates the dispersed hunters, Cooper follows procedure rather than panic: he checks emergency points, records the missing and dead, and helps the surviving five-star members reassess a campaign their enemy has already penetrated. He later hacks local cameras and erects a communication tower, restoring enough shared information for the surviving teams to move. (Chapters 1168–1223 and 1252–1253)
Protecting Joy and the hunters from Luzen
Cooper and Joy re-enter the Botanical Garden with Blackjack's group and are hunted by Luzen. Cooper uses experience rather than physical dominance: he rejects smoke that would blind humans without hiding them from a werewolf, tracks the entire fight, and lands electrified crossbow bolts whenever Luzen is about to finish an ally. When Blackjack is pinned and the group is collapsing, Cooper kicks him clear, grabs Luzen, and activates the explosives carried around his belt. He asks the survivors to tell Edvard that he enjoyed working with him. The blast destroys Cooper's body and wounds Luzen, but the Ironfang survives through regeneration; Cooper's sacrifice buys an opening rather than a victory, leaving Joy to grieve both her grandfather and the limits of the institution he served. (Chapters 1290–1302)
Appearance and personality
Cooper is an older man whose age is emphasized even among long-serving five-star hunters. At his first command post he does not wear the night-vision mask used by the others, relying on ordinary vision while monitoring the cameras. He is cautious, procedural, and protective without being passive. He never intended Joy to become a hunter after Altereds killed her parents, but taught her self-defense when her anger made her a target; once she chose the profession, he accepted her beside him. The explosives he carries only on dangerous missions show that he prepared privately to exchange his life for hers or the team's if necessary. (Chapters 1168–1223 and 1299–1300)
Powers and abilities
Five-star Hunter training
Cooper is an ordinary human and demonstrates no Altered transformation or supernatural physiology. His five-star rank represents accumulated hunts, combat judgment, and mastery of Anti-Altered equipment. He can read a projectile weapon's line, reposition under pressure, and use a crossbow to interrupt attacks rather than chase low-probability kills. Age and human durability remain real limits: Joy worries that direct impacts will break his bones, and Cooper avoids close combat until sacrificing himself. The corpus does not explicitly show him using Qi, so his rank alone is not evidence that he can. (Chapters 1168–1253 and 1290–1300)
Surveillance, communications, and equipment
Cooper deploys and hacks camera systems, bypasses hotel security, tracks distributed teams, and erects a communication relay that extends the hunters' mask network. These systems require placed devices and access to local infrastructure; they can be damaged, blocked by enclosed areas, or lost once Cooper is fighting. His combat kit includes an Anti-Altered crossbow with electrified bolts and belt-mounted explosives. The bolts create openings but do not penetrate Luzen decisively, while the explosives can tear apart Cooper and strip flesh from an Ironfang without overcoming werewolf healing. (Chapters 1168–1253 and 1290–1302)
Relationships
- Joy: Cooper raises Joy after Altereds kill her parents, teaches her to defend herself, and becomes her regular mission partner once she insists on joining the hunters. His final equipment and sacrifice are shaped by the possibility that he may need to die to protect her. (Chapters 1168–1223 and 1290–1300)
- Edvard: Edvard trusts Cooper as a fallback commander and values his reports across Ruin City. Cooper's last message is personal gratitude, and Edvard's grief on learning of his death shows a friendship beneath their ranks. (Chapters 1168–1253 and 1299–1302)
- Luzen: Cooper identifies the tactics needed to keep the group alive against Luzen, repeatedly interrupts lethal attacks, and finally detonates himself while holding him. Luzen's survival demonstrates the gap between even a five-star human's last resort and an elite Ironfang's regeneration. (Chapters 1290–1302)
