Chen

Leon Chen is a former Assistant Chief Constable of White Rose and one of that organization's strongest Altereds. His Bixi form specializes in defense and water control, making him an effective guardian when he chooses to help the Howlers against the Lupus pack. He is distinct from AFA student Wu Chen, whose much earlier appearances do not belong to Leon.

Biography

White Rose authority and the defense of Slough

Chen is first named among White Rose's senior officers during the crisis created by the Altered-prison break. He later appears beside Don Tinge and Theodore Tallsworth at the meeting where White Rose's leadership negotiates with Gary Dem. After the organization collapses, he no longer presents himself as an active official, but he retains the judgment behind his former rank: he says he only enters fights he believes can be won. He arrives in time to save Austin from a thrown spear, then holds the line against Broodie's werewolves until Don and Adam join them. His decision helps prevent Austin's death and brings the surviving senior White Rose fighters into the struggle for Slough. (Chapters 897, 1058, and 1454–1456)

Chen later helps restrain the feral Kai, using water defenses and martial timing until Kai breaks his hardened shell and leaves him too depleted to continue. Rather than pretending otherwise, Chen acknowledges that his defenses will not recover soon and helps move the subdued Kai into secure storage. A later report establishes that Chen survives the wider conflict and remains in contact with Elijah, although the corpus does not show his eventual occupation after White Rose. Appearance and personality

Chen has black hair and wears glasses. As Assistant Chief he uses White Rose's white-and-gold jacket; after leaving the organization he appears in a scuffed black leather jacket and ripped black jeans. His calm self-introduction in the middle of battle and willingness to admit when he has become a liability present him as controlled and pragmatic. (Chapters 897, 1058, 1454–1455, and 1484)

Bixi transformation and water defense

Chen's Altered line comes from a Bixi fossil discovered generations earlier on his family's land. The creature is classed as a “fake dragon” rather than a true dragon and supplies a hardened shell capable of enduring extreme force. Chen gathers mana into his limbs and shapes water into aerial whirlpools, shields, waves, and spiraling reinforcement around his strikes. This lets him catch projectiles, redirect attacks, and protect allies while using practiced martial arts at close range. (Chapters 1454–1462)

His specialization is strongest in controlled or one-on-one defense. Multiple attackers can pressure angles he cannot cover, Kai's speed can bypass his prepared strikes, and sufficient damage cracks the shell for a prolonged period rather than being instantly repaired. Water also interacts poorly with Kai's ice, which can freeze constructed barriers and change the battlefield Chen depends on. At his latest demonstrated state, his shell is shattered and he declines further combat; later evidence confirms survival, not full recovery. (Chapters 1455, 1477–1484, and 1582)

Relationships

• Austin: Chen saves Austin from a lethal spear and coordinates water defense with Austin's earth and Qi techniques.
• Gary Dem: Chen first meets Gary as White Rose leadership, then supports Gary's side when Slough is attacked.
• Kai: Chen helps oppose Kai's feral Alpha state and is badly depleted when Kai breaks through his defense.
• Don Tinge: Chen serves beneath the White Rose chief and returns to battle alongside him after the organization falls.
