Adam

Adam Law is the Superintendent who leads White Rose's internal disciplinary branch. His authority interrupts the Phoenix Gang's corruption of the organization, and his restraining Altered abilities later make him one of the senior fighters defending Slough. He is distinct from landlord Adam Morten, who appears earlier in the corpus.

Biography

Internal justice and the defense of Slough

Adam first appears at the White Rose prison after Kanu's evidence reaches Internal Affairs. Ignoring the escaped prisoners to remain within his jurisdiction, he arrests officials implicated in Phoenix corruption and protects Kanu and the other witnesses from immediate retaliation. He later mediates White Rose's negotiations with the Howlers under Chief Don Tinge, retaining authority comparable to the chief within disciplinary matters. (Chapters 912 and 1058–1060)

During the Lupus assault, Adam joins Gary's attempt to restrain the feral Kai. Kai's ice disables his tentacles and his bite leaves Adam's power unstable, but Adam stays to guard the captive rather than pretend he can continue at full strength. When Don falls to Lupus, Adam leaves the cellar to answer Gary's call and attacks in grief despite his unreliable transformation. Lupus tears apart his tentacle, impales and freezes him, leaving Adam barely alive when the survivors evacuate the critically injured. (Chapters 1458, 1473–1484, and 1505–1516)

Appearance and personality

Adam is a small-framed, bald man who wears White Rose's black-and-red peaked cap and uniform. He carries himself upright and projects enough authority to stop senior officers in place. His rigid attention to jurisdiction can seem cold, but it enables him to act against corruption and later gives way to personal loyalty when Don is killed. (Chapters 912 and 1505)

Powers and abilities

Adam is an aquatic Altered whose transformed body produces eight large physical tentacles. They strike and restrain with enough force to shatter stone, while his rubbery skin resists tearing and heals a severe bite within seconds. He can spit concealing ink and produce limited water, shaping puddles into additional water tentacles; rain expands this control to nearly thirty limbs and lets his restraint complement Chen's defense and Don's offense. (Chapters 1474 and 1476–1479)

Cold is a direct counter. Kai freezes, pierces, and severs the tentacles, immobilizes Adam's legs, and leaves the transformation unreliable after biting him. Adam can still force out one enlarged tentacle later, but Lupus tears it apart and overwhelms his already injured body. His latest state is alive under emergency treatment, not confirmed recovered. (Chapters 1474, 1478–1484, and 1505–1516)

Relationships

• Kanu: Kanu's evidence enables Adam's corruption purge, and Adam formally protects him as a witness.
• Don: Adam is Don's institutional rival and battlefield partner; Don's death drives Adam to fight despite severe impairment.
• Kai: Adam helps restrain Kai's feral Alpha form, but Kai's ice and bite disable much of his power.
