Zallack

Zallack is a young Penswi and trainee for the Dark Reds, a leading professional speed-game team. His pride provokes a confrontation with visiting aliens, but losing narrowly to Quinn pushes him to analyse his performance and ultimately makes him the visitors' guide. (Chapters 2129–2141)

Biography

Arcade pride and a one-point defeat

Zallack leads a group of Penswi teenagers taunting an Amra player at an arcade. When the Amra calls him a child, Zallack attacks from behind to prove that Penswi speed also has combat value; Quinn catches his thrust before it lands. Though the intervention makes Zallack wary, he accepts Russ's wager that the visitors can beat his group at speed games, on condition that the contest represent three competitors on each side. He honours his role as organiser and continues even after Ceril comes within two points of a Penswi player. (Chapters 2129–2131)

Zallack posts his best-ever score against Quinn but loses by exactly one point. Instead of dismissing the result, he immediately reviews his choices and obtains footage for self-analysis, while also keeping his promise to guide the winners despite missing a training session. Jun, a Dark Reds professional, explains that Quinn deliberately controlled the margin rather than barely winning. Zallack's pride remains bruised, but the loss turns into evidence that his visitor is far beyond an ordinary arcade opponent. (Chapters 2132–2133)

Guiding visitors toward the Penswi team

Zallack returns with Jun and leads the visitors outside the city while they investigate the Penswi and search for the Blades. Seeing Quinn defeat a beast through raw power leaves both Penswi astonished and further raises the value of the contact, although Zallack loses respect for Jun when the professional's ingratiating motives become obvious. Information obtained through Zallack helps the group understand the importance of the Penswi tournament. (Chapters 2133–2135)

At the team grounds, Zallack remains among the trainees watching Quinn and the others attempt to qualify. When the tournament begins, Ceril cannot join the team itself, so Zallack uses his ticket and position with the trainees to guide her to the event. This is his last personal appearance; the corpus does not state whether he later became a professional or encountered the visitors again. (Chapters 2140–2141)

Appearance and personality

Zallack is a Penswi with a larger, more pointed head than the companions around him. He is young enough to be called a teenager and a trainee, though he angrily rejects being called a child. He is aggressive and proud of his species, but also cautious when he recognises unexplained speed, serious about training, analytical after defeat, and reliable enough to keep a promise that interferes with his daily practice. (Chapters 2129–2133)

Powers and abilities

Penswi speed and perception

Zallack possesses the Penswi species' extreme speed. When he attacks the Amra, his movement makes the surroundings appear to process in slow motion, allowing him to thrust before nearby companions can stop him. Quinn nevertheless sees and catches the hand, establishing that Zallack's speed is exceptional relative to ordinary Penswi youths but not absolute. The corpus does not name this as a learned ability or give an energy cost, activation period, or measured top speed. (Chapters 2129–2130)

Reflex-game training

As a Dark Reds trainee, Zallack practises games built around speed, reflexes, and rapid decisions. Competition pushes him to a personal-best button score, and his first response to losing is to reconstruct his route and study footage while the decisions remain fresh. Quinn can still exceed him while monitoring the scoreboard and deliberately limiting the winning margin. Zallack's training therefore shows both real improvement under pressure and a substantial gap from the visitor's maximum. (Chapters 2131–2133)

No separate weapon, named combat technique, or later power progression is established. His attempted hand thrust shows that he applies speed offensively, but Quinn stops it before its effect on an Amra can be tested. (Chapters 2129–2130)

Relationships

  • Quinn: Quinn prevents Zallack's ambush, defeats him by a deliberately narrow margin, and later demonstrates overwhelming combat strength. Zallack moves from hostility and suspicion to serving as a guide for Quinn's group. (Chapters 2129–2135)
  • Russ: Russ proposes the wager and recognises Zallack's pride and work ethic. Zallack initially suspects Russ's transformed appearance of cheating but still keeps the agreed bargain. (Chapters 2130–2133)
  • Jun: Zallack respects Jun as a Dark Reds professional until Jun uses the visitors' strength as an opportunity to ingratiate himself. Jun also makes Zallack understand that his one-point loss was controlled. (Chapters 2132–2135)
  • Ceril: Ceril impresses Zallack's group by nearly matching a Penswi at their own game. Zallack later guides her into the tournament with the trainees when she cannot join the competing team. (Chapters 2130 and 2141)
