Jun
Jun is a senior member of the Penswi professional team called the Dark Reds. Known as a trickster, he recruits Quinn and Russ to defeat the dominant athlete Stark, but also shows loyalty to his planet when alien visitors seek its resources and when Quinn's warning appears to threaten the Penswi population. (Chapters 2132–2153)
Biography
Turning alien visitors into Dark Reds
Jun studies footage of Quinn defeating his junior Zallack and volunteers to guide the visitors because he suspects their strength could change Penswi competition. At the hunting grounds, he demonstrates how Penswi professionals evade beasts and cut them down through speed, then watches Quinn overwhelm the same prey and build a controlled beast force. When Quinn finds a nest crystal, Jun refuses to let him remove a potentially important planetary resource without compensation despite knowing he cannot win a direct confrontation. He resolves the pressure with a bargain: the visitors can keep the crystal if they join the Dark Reds and help defeat Stark. That choice serves his competitive wish without simply surrendering his planet's claim. (Chapters 2132–2135)
Winning the tournament and challenging Quinn
Jun acts as recruiter and tactician during the grand event. In the obstacle course he taunts Stark into waiting at the finish line, taking first place and keeping the Dark Reds within reach of victory; the success depends on persuasion as much as speed. Russ then manifests a copy of Jun to assist in a later event, while Quinn finally defeats Stark and wins the championship for the team. Jun celebrates both the victory and the disruption of a predictable hierarchy that had made the sport stale. (Chapters 2140–2151)
When Quinn fills the arena with blood swords to force the Penswi rulers to acknowledge an approaching threat, Jun is the one team member able to confront him verbally. He feels betrayed because the visitors had been treated with respect and because his own people appear endangered. Once Quinn withdraws the attack and explains the scale of the threat, Jun accepts the result and thanks him for helping the Penswi and fulfilling the Dark Reds' goal. He promises future support before the visitors leave; later chapters mention Russ's summoned copy, not a separate return by Jun himself. (Chapters 2152–2155)
Appearance and personality
Jun is a Penswi of about Zallack's height with more muscular arms and legs; Penswi age is difficult for the visitors to judge by appearance. He wears the Dark Reds' thick red weighted training shirt with the other professionals. Jun is curious, competitive, and openly underhanded enough to be known as a trickster, yet his bargaining over the nest crystal and his challenge to Quinn show that team ambition does not erase his loyalty to the wider Penswi population. (Chapters 2132–2134 and 2152)
Powers and abilities
Penswi speed and hunting technique
Jun shares the Penswi race's exceptional speed and is an experienced professional. He leads visitors through the hunting grounds without using his top pace, evades a fast lion-like beast, and turns the speed of his hands into repeated cutting attacks before finishing the weakened target. The method depends on avoiding damage because Penswi bodies are described as comparatively fragile; Quinn's greater raw strength demonstrates a different solution that Jun cannot reproduce. (Chapters 2133–2134)
Athletic tactics and endurance
Jun can negotiate a muddy obstacle course of rings, climbing frames, and physical interference quickly enough to trail only Stark until his provocation makes Stark wait. His victory therefore demonstrates high professional speed and strategic manipulation, not proof that he is naturally faster than Stark. As a teammate, he reads opponents, recognises when Quinn deliberately limited a victory, and identifies how to allocate competitors across events. The source does not give Jun a named ability or quantify his maximum speed. (Chapters 2132, 2140–2147, and 2150)
Summoned copy distinction
Russ can summon a purple copy of Jun from his own mental power. That construct reproduces Jun's fast button-pressing well enough to assist Russ, but it is Russ's ability rather than a duplication technique controlled by Jun. Chapters 2148 and 2155 refer to this manifestation and do not establish that Jun himself can create copies. (Chapters 2148 and 2155)
Relationships
- Quinn: Jun recruits Quinn as the athlete capable of ending Stark's dominance. He admires Quinn's ability, resists him when Penswi interests are at stake, and ultimately regards his intervention as a profound change for the race. (Chapters 2132–2135 and 2151–2153)
- Russ: Russ joins the Dark Reds under Jun's bargain and uses his own ability to manifest a copy of Jun during competition. Jun shares Russ's delight at Stark finally being challenged. (Chapters 2135 and 2147–2151)
- Stark: Stark is the champion Jun wants the Dark Reds to defeat. Jun cannot match his speed directly, so he manipulates Stark's desire for excitement and creates the opening his alien recruits need. (Chapters 2135 and 2146–2151)
