Sam
Sam is Nate's closest friend and the strategist who turns Quinn's collection of powerful individuals into a functioning faction. Frustrated by a hard limit on his wind ability, he first seeks growth as a Traveller and later chooses conversion into a vampire, but his greatest influence comes from planning evacuations, alliances, military operations, and public strategy. He leads the Cursed faction through Quinn's absences, works with Bliss after the faction is driven into conflict with humanity, and remains loyal to Quinn while challenging him to choose for himself. Sam is a separate male character from Samantha, the Earthborn officer. (Chapters 55, 219, 548–577, 592–602, 810–813, 1407, 1703, 1934–1938, and 2539–2540)
Biography
Ability limits and the Inter-Base Tournament
Sam grows up under pressure to justify the expensive wind ability his academically successful parents purchased for him. He improves well beyond an ordinary beginner but reaches a physiological limit when his body cannot generate enough MC cells for a level-six book. Nate's strength continues to rise while Sam's progress stalls, and Sam fears being left behind by both his best friend and a younger brother whose earth ability receives military support. The disappointment does not make him resent Nate; their friendship instead becomes the stable relationship through which Sam learns to compensate with observation and judgment. (Chapters 55, 218–219, and 548)
In Power Fighters, Sam is less disciplined than Nate and loses to Blood Evolver after mishandling a defensive cape, but he studies the unknown player closely. At the Inter-Base Tournament he joins Quinn, Vorden, and Fex against students who try to exploit their apparent weakness. Sam is not the team's dominant fighter and initially misreads their chances, yet he recognises the precision of Quinn's Flash Step and connects it to Blood Evolver after Quinn saves him from a sabotaged machine. His response is curiosity rather than exposure: he asks careful questions, accepts Quinn's evasive answer for the moment, and values the help offered by a stranger. (Chapters 55, 291–301)
Sam's reasoning helps preserve Quinn's secrecy as their acquaintance deepens. When Nate nearly reveals that Quinn is both Blood Evolver and the Cursed Child, Sam stops him because the combination of blood-like and shadow powers is clearly being hidden for a reason. He does not yet understand Quinn's vampire nature, but decides that trust does not require immediate possession of every answer. That restraint makes him one of the first outsiders able to protect Quinn's secret through judgment rather than coercion or supernatural loyalty. (Chapters 300–311, 340–348, and 549)
The tournament also clarifies Sam's own comparative advantage. He cannot match Nate's combat growth, but he reads motives, catches inconsistencies, and thinks in terms of risk to a group. These abilities remain informal while he is a student, and his reluctance to confront stronger personalities sometimes prevents a good idea from becoming an order. Later field experience turns the same cautious intelligence into the basis of command. (Chapters 219, 291–300, 548, and 568–571)
From the Crows to the Cursed faction
When military school ends, Sam faces a choice between remaining in a system where his talented younger brother eclipses him or accepting Nate's invitation to become a Traveller. He leaves with Nate and joins the medium-sized Crows, seeking a place where he can still prove that his future is not fixed by his MC-cell limit. Sam rises from an initial low assessment to Rank C through work and field results, although Nate reaches Rank B first. The recurring gap still hurts, but it also forces Sam to identify a contribution that is genuinely his rather than a weaker copy of Nate's. (Chapters 544–550 and 553)
That contribution becomes visible during a high-tier beast hunt. Sam challenges Kong's unsafe distribution of tracking equipment, eventually speaks out when the nominal leader endangers the teams, and coordinates fighters around Linda's openings. His wind strikes barely affect an emperor-tier beast, but he uses positioning, observation, and orders to help the group work together; when an attack targets Linda, he shields her with his cape. He later stays against the emperor despite fear and discovers that courage does not make his wind powerful enough to matter. The experience confirms that his mind can influence a battle whose strongest target he cannot personally damage. (Chapters 568–574)
Learning that Quinn's party are vampires puts Sam's life at risk under Kazz's secrecy rules. Quinn offers to remove his memories, but Sam instead chooses conversion. Part of that choice comes from loyalty and the desire to protect the people now implicated in the secret; part comes from his fear of permanent stagnation while Nate and the others continue growing. Conversion is therefore both commitment and a personal gamble. Quinn delays the ritual until it can be performed safely, and Sam keeps the truth even from Nate while waiting. (Chapters 573–577 and 601–602)
Before and after that change, Sam helps transform Quinn's idea of independence into infrastructure. He initially lists the costs that make founding a faction look impossible, inadvertently showing Quinn that the captured military ship and gathered allies answer many of those objections. When the Crows collaborate with Quinn, Sam designs an evacuation route and installs a teleporter aboard the Cursed Faction Ship. He becomes the person who converts ambitious plans into staffing, supplies, escape contingencies, and schedules, while Nate trains the fighters. (Chapters 555–559 and 592–595)
The blood ritual turns Sam into a halfling and removes his wind ability. Although disappointed that he begins at the weakest vampire stage, he takes Quinn's own progression as proof that the new limit is not permanent and asks to learn shadow because its versatility rewards creativity. He later evolves into a regular vampire. After Hilston nearly kills Nate, Sam and Paul accept guidance from an unseen vampire and perform draining blood rituals to save Nate and Dennis. Sam knowingly places his friend's life above vampire law and above Nate's likely dislike of outside help; Nate's gratitude confirms that the decision preserved rather than broke their bond. (Chapters 602, 799–800, and 814)
Running the faction through the Dalki war
When Quinn disappears after the Blade conflict, Sam begins attending the world-leaders' table and making decisions for a faction whose founder has given it no immediate direction. With Sam's support, the remaining leaders absorb the leaderless Bree territories into the surviving powers and secure openings for Cursed-aligned teachers in the reorganised military system. He worries that grief and new authority could turn Quinn toward the same abuses they opposed, but chooses to remain close enough to challenge him if necessary. When Quinn returns, Sam does not simply surrender all thought; he briefs him, asks whether he is ready, and takes responsibility for implementing the next phase. (Chapters 810–813)
Sam's administrative load becomes the hidden machinery of the Cursed faction. He coordinates subsidiary factions, resources, forging, transport, education, secrecy, and monthly leadership meetings. Megan's difficulty covering his position demonstrates how much work normally passes through him, while Quinn states that replacing him would be extraordinarily difficult. Sam also persuades Quinn to serve within the new military school: the role can improve conditions for weak students, spread useful combat knowledge, recruit people the other powers neglect, and let Quinn examine whether the institution has actually changed. The proposal aligns Quinn's personal experience with the faction's long-term political needs. (Chapters 946–950)
His strategic influence is inseparable from moral triage. During the parasite poisoning, Sam isolates infected friends to protect everyone aboard, even though he hates treating their lives as a lesser priority; opening the room later contributes to Blip's fatal injury, showing that neither caution nor compassion guarantees a safe result. He applies the same discipline during larger battles, stopping allies from rushing a five-spike Dalki out of grief and insisting that exhausted fighters cannot help merely because they care. Sam increasingly defines leadership as making the least destructive available choice while accepting responsibility for its cost. (Chapters 693–703 and 1234–1239)
The attack on the Cursed ship exposes the limits of even experienced planning. Sam prioritises evacuating civilians from the clash between Hilston and the Dalki, directing them toward a nearby shelter; only after arrival does he remember that the Earthborn group had already abandoned it and discover Dalki inside. Other leaders separate to draw the enemy away, while Sam carries the injured and blames himself for leading the faction into another trap. Vincent argues that remaining on the ship might have killed even more people, but Sam does not dismiss the failure. He regroups survivors, gathers intelligence, repairs transport, and keeps command rather than allowing guilt to become paralysis. (Chapters 1191–1220 and 1234–1244)
By the middle of the war Sam is also managing the boundary between military truth and public confidence. He coordinates Bonny and Void, plans what new vampires such as Sach should reveal, uses a public transfer of Oscar's demon-tier weapon to strengthen cooperation with Earthborn forces, and establishes hidden teleporter support for threatened Cursed planets. These measures are not cosmetic: reputation affects recruitment, alliances, and whether civilians trust vampires during a war. His willingness to stage a presentation is balanced by a consistent aim of keeping the underlying coalition functional. (Chapters 1142, 1248–1253, and 1262–1264)
Loss, integration, and the millennial separation
At Blade Island, Sam tries to prepare for a coordinated attack whose scale exceeds the plan. He divides the defenders by approach, shifts resources when expected fighters are missing, and fights beside Nate and Layla. When blood supplies fall and waves keep growing, he chooses evacuation over defending the demon-tier Dragon, reasoning that Quinn has a better independent escape route than the ordinary faction members. The retreat preserves survivors but cannot prevent Wevil's death or the loss of the objective, reinforcing that strategic success may mean limiting a defeat rather than securing victory. (Chapters 1267–1305)
The next crisis forces a wider choice between the vampire settlement and Cursed planets. Sam recognises Bliss's predicted crossroads and tells Quinn that protecting their people is the right decision, yet Graham's arrival turns an otherwise effective defence into disaster. Helen and her sisters sacrifice themselves to save evacuees, and Sam again treats the deaths as evidence that his call failed. Quinn's promise to rescue the captives helps him resume leadership, after which Sam uses reporting, records, and controlled introductions to build cooperation between humans and vampires whose fear could otherwise fracture the alliance. (Chapters 1306–1312, 1346, 1372, and 1388–1417)
After Pure's coordinated takeover is exposed, Sam helps divide responsibilities among formerly hostile groups. He identifies how ability-storage crystals replace Truedream, supports using vampire soldiers against infiltrators who can pass among humans, and leaves command to Sera when the celestial's power makes that the safest arrangement. In the final Dalki campaign, Sam rallies exhausted vampires, orders evacuation from Graham's destructive range, and restrains Ruby from a rescue attempt that would only add another hostage. These choices preserve force and focus while leaving the direct victory to fighters whose power can affect Graham. (Chapters 1455–1465 and 1524–1562)
Nate's death breaks through Sam's practiced control. Because Sam turned him, he feels the life extinguish and blames himself for not recalling him, but Quinn's incomplete evolution leaves no time to collapse. When Quinn asks for blood, Sam mobilises ship reserves and the settlement's supplies, ordering blood dropped over the castle so Quinn can draw it into his transformation. The reserve exists because Sam had spent months collecting varied blood at Quinn's request. His grief therefore becomes immediate logistical action that helps Quinn reach the state needed to defeat Graham. (Chapters 1563–1569)
Quinn's resulting injuries require long slumber, leaving Sam frightened by threats that remain without their strongest protector. He nevertheless accepts the group's resolve to improve the world before Quinn wakes and continues leading the Cursed faction. Evidence from centuries later shows Sam still distributing resources and searching for Quinn, but the faction becomes an enemy in human accounts and is gradually erased from public history. Sam disappears after turning to Bliss, who stores his shadow power and houses him in a space where he ages slowly. The arrangement preserves him for the millennial return but isolates him from much of the history he is trying to influence. (Chapters 1571–1594, 1703–1705, and 1934)
When Quinn finally encounters him, Sam is visibly older but not as aged as contemporaries who remained in ordinary time. He admits that he had contacted Bliss before Graham's defeat and later relied on her because he could not hold together the Cursed faction or secure human–vampire peace alone. Sam demonstrates a crystal restoring his stored shadow, explains his part in moving Quinn and Peter beyond the celestials' attention, and chooses to keep working with Bliss even when Quinn rejects her preferred outcome for Erin. The reunion preserves their trust without erasing disagreement: Quinn leaves Sam as a link to Bliss because he trusts Sam's judgment more than hers. (Chapters 1934–1938)
Advising Quinn through the demon war
Sam and Bliss remain apart from public celebrations, but reappear when Jack and Jim begin their conquest. Quinn is angry that their foresight did not prevent every loss and still distrusts Bliss; Sam intervenes physically and rhetorically, reminding him that possible futures cannot all be solved by direct action and identifying himself as the Cursed faction's strategist. He gives Quinn coordinates leading toward potential allied species and a recording made by Quinn's parents before their deaths. The gift provides personal truth as well as a strategic destination, and Quinn follows it because Sam's long service still carries weight. (Chapters 1987–2009 and 2125–2146)
Sam's role during the final campaign is to interpret uncertainty without pretending to control it. When Bliss sees events she recognises from an unfavourable future, Sam asks whether the outcome can still change and grounds their hope in the repeated unpredictability of the Talens. He does not acquire Bliss's foresight or claim certainty; he presses the seer on what her information actually permits them to conclude. That distinction continues the habit that made him useful from the academy onward: convert incomplete information into a decision while keeping its uncertainty visible. (Chapter 2508)
At the confrontation with Immortui, Sam appears inside the protective orb with Bliss and Mundus. Rather than add another command to the competing claims surrounding Quinn, he tells his leader to choose and promises support whichever decision he makes. Quinn destroys Immortui. When the resulting change removes vampire power from the universe, Quinn notices that Sam no longer smells like a vampire, and Sam confirms that Quinn alone retains that nature. His final appearance therefore establishes that he is alive and no longer a vampire; it does not show him retaining shadow, relearning wind, or becoming a celestial. (Chapters 2539–2540)
Appearance and personality
Sam is introduced through his Power Fighters avatar wearing a cape, equipment he forgets to use correctly when Quinn gets behind him. As a young man he is physically less imposing than Nate and often shows anxiety through lowered eyes, hesitation, or nervous attempts to avoid confrontation. When responsibility makes him feel small, he looks at his hands; in public he deliberately hides grief because he believes faction members need steadiness from a leader. A thousand years later he has wrinkles, a rougher voice, and slower ordinary movement, though Bliss's preserved space has left him much younger than uninterrupted aging would have. (Chapters 55, 219, 548, 568–571, 591, 1388, 1572, and 1934–1935)
His defining qualities are caution, analytical curiosity, loyalty, and an unusually strong sense of responsibility for downstream consequences. Early Sam can see the flaw in a plan but hesitate to confront its author; later he gives orders under pressure and accepts blame even when every option was dangerous. He can use secrecy and public presentation pragmatically, but repeatedly places lives and trust above rules, most clearly when he becomes a vampire, saves Nate illegally, and works with Bliss after human institutions turn on the Cursed faction. His loyalty to Quinn is not obedience without thought: he questions Quinn's emotional decisions, supplies alternatives, and finally supports Quinn's own choice rather than claiming authority over it. (Chapters 549, 568–571, 575–577, 694–700, 799–800, 813, 1220, 1934–1938, and 2539)
Powers and abilities
Sam's practical power changes several times. He begins as a human wind user whose MC-cell capacity has reached a ceiling, loses that ability when Quinn converts him, grows from halfling to noble vampire, and learns shadow after conversion. Bliss later stores and restores his shadow while preserving him in altered time. Immortui's defeat removes Sam's vampire nature at his last appearance, and the corpus does not demonstrate any retained supernatural ability afterward. (Chapters 219, 548, 602, 800–817, 1282, 1934, and 2540)
Strategic analysis and faction administration
Sam's signature capability is the collection and application of information. He reads opponents' incentives, notices security and political risks, builds plans with fallback routes, and converts a leader's intent into assignments, communications, resources, and timing. Representative uses include identifying unsafe equipment distribution during a beast hunt, constructing the Crows' ship-based evacuation route, coordinating multi-team faction attacks, reorganising forces after Quinn disappears, and maintaining hidden teleporters across threatened planets. He is effective because he considers logistics and public reaction together rather than treating combat as the entire problem. (Chapters 568–571, 592–595, 685–703, 810–813, and 1248–1253)
His plans have clear limits. Sam works from reports that can be incomplete, delayed, or deliberately false; unexpected forces such as Graham can invalidate sound deployments, and his evacuation to an abandoned shelter leads civilians into another battle. Emotional involvement also affects him, particularly when Nate is endangered or killed. Sam's development is not a progression toward infallibility, but toward making decisions despite uncertainty, reviewing his mistakes, and continuing to command after accepting their cost. (Chapters 1191–1220, 1238, 1279–1305, 1372–1400, and 1565)
Sam is also a political and communications strategist. He designs limited disclosures about vampires, coordinates reporters, engineers a public weapon transfer that strengthens Earthborn–Cursed cooperation, and argues for institutional roles that advance recruitment and reform. Those methods require credibility and willing partners; they cannot stop humans from later recasting the Cursed faction as enemies. His final work with Bliss applies the same skill at a celestial scale, where he challenges the meaning of a prediction and guides Quinn toward allies without claiming to know the outcome. (Chapters 692, 948–950, 1142, 1248–1253, 1400–1417, 1703–1705, 2125–2146, and 2508)
Human wind ability
Sam's parents purchase him an elemental wind ability, which he develops enough to launch ranged wind strikes and assist in beast hunts. The corpus is inconsistent about its precise achieved level: Chapter 219 says he advanced from level four to level five before failing to learn level six, while Chapter 548 retrospectively says he could not learn beyond a level-four book. Both accounts agree on the important mechanic—his body cannot produce enough MC cells for the next stage, and forcing the level-six technique causes dangerous burning pain. (Chapters 219 and 548)
Wind gives Sam range and utility but inadequate output against top beasts. He can contribute attacks while directing a team against a king-tier target, yet his strike does no meaningful damage to an emperor-tier beast. He never develops a demonstrated soul weapon for the wind ability. The blood ritual converts his MC cells and removes the ability, after which the corpus does not show him recovering it, including after his eventual return to humanity. (Chapters 568–573, 602, and 2540)
Vampire physiology and progression
Quinn's blood ritual initially makes Sam a halfling, modestly enhancing his body while removing wind and creating a need for blood. Sam must acclimate gradually through a flask and sun ring so that smell and hunger do not make him attack allies. He later evolves into a regular vampire through fighting and, by Blade Island, is described as barely a vampire noble. That progression gives him enhanced strength, speed, senses, healing, and longevity, although Nate—whom Sam turned—surpasses him in direct combat. (Chapters 602, 693, 799–814, and 1282)
Sam's administrative duties restrict his combat refinement. He learns basic blood aura attacks but admits he has not learned blood hardening, and he often preserves blood rather than spending it on stronger techniques. Blood abilities consume carried or bodily blood; prolonged combat leaves both Sam and Nate unable to keep producing red aura at full strength. His vampire senses remain tactically useful for locating injured allies, while his strength lets him carry multiple wounded people and restrain an ordinary human from entering a lethal fight. (Chapters 1219–1220, 1282, 1291, and 1558)
The vampire state ends with Immortui's defeat. Sam's final exchange establishes that he no longer has a vampire's smell and that Quinn is the last vampire. The broader reversion removes vampire blood powers and resets MC-cell access, but Sam does not demonstrate a new ability before the corpus ends; any claim that he retains noble physiology, blood skills, or supernatural longevity afterward would exceed the evidence. (Chapter 2540)
Blood ritual and Nate's lineage
As a regular vampire, Sam can perform a blood ritual that creates another vampire, but he does not initially know how to activate it. An unseen knowledgeable vampire guides him step by step while Nate is dying. The ritual links their energy, severely drains Sam, and is described as likely limiting an ordinary vampire to one turning. Sam weighs the risk and illegality against certain death, then succeeds in creating Nate as a regular vampire. (Chapters 799–800 and 814)
The connection has consequences beyond the initial transformation. Nate is not mentally enslaved and continues to make independent choices, but Sam senses his death particularly strongly as the person who turned him. The corpus does not show Sam creating another vampire after Nate, supporting rather than disproving the stated one-person practical limit. (Chapters 800, 814, and 1565)
Shadow ability
Sam asks for shadow immediately after conversion because its defensive and utility applications reward creative control. Quinn cannot teach it conventionally at first, but later transfers shadow energy into Sam's changed MC cells, gives him written instruction, and trains him alongside other converted allies. This acquisition prevents him from learning a different ordinary ability while those cells remain configured for shadow. His learning is slower than Quinn's system-assisted mastery and begins with basic shadow control. (Chapters 602 and 817)
Over time Sam learns defensive blocking, Shadow Travel, and Shadow Link. He uses shadow to avoid and absorb stray attacks while crossing a battlefield, serves as a link destination through which Quinn or Vincent can reach him, and preserves a connection across vast separation. Shadow defence is resource-limited rather than invulnerability, while travel depends on an available connection and can be disrupted when powers are stored or the linked user is inaccessible. (Chapters 1219, 1312, 1555, 1586, and 1934–1938)
Bliss stores Sam's shadow in a crystal so Quinn cannot locate him during the long separation. Breaking a matching crystal returns the energy through Sam's body and restores his ability well enough for Shadow Link to recognise him. This is a temporary removal and restoration performed through prepared magic, not a new shadow evolution Sam develops himself. His last demonstrated access is before Immortui's defeat; after his reversion, continued shadow use is unconfirmed. (Chapters 1934 and 2540)
Combat equipment and field survival
Sam compensates for lower offensive power with beast gear suited to survival. His early Power Fighters cape protects his back when positioned correctly, and a comparable defensive cape later shields Linda from a projectile. Before the Blade Island campaign he selects a mismatched set of legendary- and emperor-tier gear by testing which pieces provide the best physical increase, choosing reliable statistics over specialised active skills. The corpus does not establish these pieces as unique named items or show them surviving to his latest state. (Chapters 55, 571, and 1272)
Bliss's preservation space
Sam's survival across roughly a millennium is enabled by a space created through Bliss's magic, not by an innate Sam ability. Time or aging proceeds slowly there, and Sam rarely leaves it, preserving his life at the cost of firsthand knowledge about the outside world. He can report what he has heard and what Bliss tells him, but he explicitly has not witnessed much of the intervening history. (Chapters 1934–1935)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Vampire halfling | 602 | Quinn's blood ritual removes wind, enhances his body, and introduces blood hunger and sunlight precautions. |
| Shadow ability | 602–817 | Receives Quinn's transferred shadow energy and written training after conversion, configuring his new MC cells for defensive and travel techniques. |
| Regular vampire | 693–800 | Combat and feeding complete his evolution beyond halfling, giving him enough rank to perform a blood ritual. |
| Vampire Noble | By 1282 | Reaches noble rank but remains a strategist first, with modest blood-hardening knowledge and less direct combat growth than Nate. |
| Shadow temporarily stored and restored | 1934 | Bliss removes the power into prepared crystals to hide Sam from Quinn, then restores it so Shadow Link recognizes him again. |
| Human reversion; powers unconfirmed | 2540 | Immortui's death removes his vampire state; no later scene demonstrates restored wind, retained shadow, or supernatural longevity. |
Relationships
- Quinn: Sam moves from perceptive acquaintance to Quinn's indispensable strategist and one of the few people trusted to challenge his judgment. He builds the faction around Quinn's strength, leads during his absences, and later works with Bliss because he believes that path best protects what the Cursed faction stood for. At the final confrontation he returns authority to Quinn, promising support for his own decision. (Chapters 299–311, 549–559, 592–602, 810–813, 946–950, 1220, 1565, 1934–1938, 2125–2146, and 2539–2540)
- Nate: Nate is Sam's best friend, protector, comic counterweight, and earliest source of confidence. Sam's fear of falling behind shapes his conversion, but he risks vampire law and his own energy to keep Nate alive. Nate's later death overwhelms him and remains one of the clearest personal costs beneath Sam's strategic role. (Chapters 55, 218–219, 548, 575–577, 799–800, and 1565)
- Bliss: Sam contacts Bliss before Graham's defeat and later accepts her help when peace and the Cursed faction collapse around him. He does not treat her visions as certainty: he demonstrates her aid to Quinn, fills in details she might omit, and questions whether an observed future can change. Their partnership preserves Sam but separates him from ordinary history. (Chapters 1312, 1934–1938, 2125–2128, 2508, and 2539–2540)
- Linda: Sam recognises Linda as a decisive field leader and protects her during their first major hunt. They later share the burden of running the Crows' successor faction, guarding vampire secrecy, and executing Quinn's plans. (Chapters 548–574, 592, 685–703, and 1268–1312)
- Paul: Paul provides the military experience Sam lacks, while Sam supplies the faction-level coordination that lets Paul's expertise influence operations. They survive Hilston together and each perform a blood ritual to save a dying companion. (Chapters 594–595, 685–703, 799–800, and 1253)
- Fex: Fex teaches Sam the practical realities of becoming a vampire and repeatedly fights within plans Sam coordinates. Their reunion after the millennial separation leaves Sam ashamed that he could not protect the faction from Fex's losses, though Fex rejects the idea that Sam alone failed them. (Chapters 594–602, 817–934, 1458–1465, and 1935)
- Samantha: Samantha is a separate Earthborn commander, not an alias or expanded name for Sam. They cooperate through the Dalki war and human–vampire transition, with Sam coordinating political and military plans while Samantha becomes a public bridge to human forces. (Chapters 1125–1142, 1248–1253, 1456–1465, and 1703)
Items
- Cursed Faction Ship: The mobile base around which Sam builds the faction's evacuation, command, transport, supply, and communications systems. He spends much of the war running its operations and continues directing the Cursed faction after Quinn enters slumber. (Chapters 592–595, 685–703, 810–813, 946–950, 1191–1239, and 1571–1594)
