Cursed Faction Ship
The Cursed Faction Ship, also called Bertha, Betha, or Big Bertha, is one of eight prototype military vessels made from altered light Glathrium. Quinn Talen obtains it without authorization and turns it into the Cursed faction's transport, headquarters, family refuge, and warship. Its unusually durable hull, command systems, weapons, hangars, and teleporters allow a faction formed from several smaller groups to operate as a mobile community rather than remain tied to one shelter. (Chapters 594, 606, 610, 742, 946, and 1193)
History
The military builds eight experimental Bertha-class ships as state-of-the-art vessels carrying advanced weapons and war equipment. When one leaves Earth and travels toward the Graylash area without authorization, military personnel realize that Quinn somehow controls the missing prototype. Peter guards it while Sam and Fex install teleporters, and the interior's size and facilities immediately suggest that it can become a permanent base rather than merely a stolen means of travel. Its storage areas include mechs and other military equipment left aboard. (Chapters 594 and 606)
The ship becomes the institutional centre of the Cursed faction when the Crows and Eagles combine under Quinn's leadership. Peter identifies Quinn as the leader of the Cursed ship, and most members of the associated families and factions live aboard. This arrangement lets Sam coordinate people whose earlier organizations had separate leaders while preserving a shared place for noncombatants, officers, medical personnel, and fighters. (Chapters 610 and 616)
The faction later changes the vessel's visual identity. Its formerly metallic exterior is painted black and red, and the word “Cursed” appears at the front with a slash and two fang marks. Other faction leaders nevertheless recognize its distinctive frame as the lost Bertha prototype, one of only eight in existence. The military continues operating the other seven, but Oscar never makes recovery of Quinn's ship a condition of cooperation and does not demand its return. (Chapters 742, 946, and 1095)
During the Dalki war, the ship functions as a command centre and evacuation vessel as well as a combat platform. Sam receives real-time battlefield information and directs forces from its systems, while Logan can control and alter the vessel through his machine ability. It carries fighters and their families, launches or coordinates smaller craft, moves between Cursed-controlled planets, and serves as a teleporter destination and supply point. Muka also maintains blood reserves aboard for vampire operations. (Chapters 1193, 1388–1415, 1517, 1540, and 1565)
The Blade family's assault brings the ship closest to destruction. Dalki board it while approximately a thousand people remain aboard, and Quinn authorizes an evacuation rather than risk every passenger. Logan deliberately crash-lands the ship on Caladi: he changes its shape for wind resistance, allows exterior sections to break away, skips the hull across the sand, and opens exits after it stops. The manoeuvre saves the occupants and leaves a vessel that requires weeks of repair and replacement parts rather than a total wreck. (Chapters 1214, 1219, and 1244)
Later chapters show the repaired Cursed ship stationed behind a shelter and moving among the faction's planets, confirming that the crash is not its final state. It remains active as a home, command post, transporter, and carrier through the later Dalki-war operations. The corpus does not narrate its ultimate loss, retirement, or custody after those campaigns, so its condition in the final demon-war era is unknown. (Chapters 1388–1415 and 1517–1565)
Design and systems
The hull is made from a modified light form of Glathrium, a material valued for strength while keeping the large vessel practical to move. The military equips the prototype with modern weaponry, war machinery, storage capacity, and space extensive enough for a faction population to live aboard. The narrative establishes the rarity and durability of the class but does not provide exact dimensions, crew limits, cruising speed, or a complete weapon inventory. (Chapters 594, 606, 742, and 946)
Its command centre gathers live information from multiple battlefronts and gives Sam the overview needed to deploy units. Sensors detect approaching forces, defensive shields draw on crystal energy, and internal controls support evacuation, launch, and communication. The faction adds teleporters that connect the vessel to other locations, making it a logistical node even when it is not directly fighting. These systems depend on energy, operators, and intact hardware; the ship can still be boarded, damaged, or forced down. (Chapters 594, 1193–1219, and 1517)
Logan's machine ability gives him an unusually direct relationship with the vessel. During the Caladi descent he reshapes the exterior, manages the breaking hull, and controls the landing in ways a conventional pilot could not reproduce through ordinary controls alone. That feat demonstrates adaptive control of the ship's machinery, not that Bertha is inherently self-transforming or indestructible. Its subsequent repairs require time and physical parts. (Chapters 1219 and 1244)
The main ship can carry or deploy smaller craft, including medium ships used during faction operations. Its hangars, supplies, blood storage, living space, and command facilities make “mobile base” a more complete description than warship alone. The same concentration creates risk: an attack on the vessel threatens soldiers, leaders, families, and infrastructure at once, which is why Quinn accepts abandoning it when the Blade assault makes continued defence unsafe. (Chapters 606, 616, 1214–1219, 1540, and 1565)
Strategic role
Possessing Bertha gives the emerging Cursed faction a recognizable headquarters without requiring Quinn to seize a civilian settlement. It allows several formerly independent groups to merge, move together, and present themselves to other powers as one faction. The black-and-red redesign turns stolen military hardware into a public emblem of that identity. (Chapters 610–616 and 742)
In the war, the ship links command, transport, defence, and humanitarian functions. Sam uses its information network to coordinate distant battles; Logan operates its machinery; fighters deploy from it; and noncombatants shelter inside it. Its value therefore lies as much in keeping the faction organized as in the strength of its hull or weapons. The crash landing illustrates that saving the people and organization takes priority over preserving the asset itself. (Chapters 1193–1219)
A later Blade-family vessel is designed to resemble the earlier Cursed ship after the Blades separate from Quinn's faction. That resemblance does not make it the same physical ship. Likewise, a later comparison that describes another vessel as equivalent to one hundred Cursed ships measures scale and does not establish Bertha's presence in that scene. (Chapters 1772 and 1811)
Associated characters
- Quinn Talen: Quinn obtains the missing prototype and becomes the leader around whom its residents and component factions organize. He later authorizes evacuation when keeping the ship would endanger everyone aboard. (Chapters 594, 610, and 1214)
- Sam: Sam helps turn the ship into a faction base, operates from its command centre, and uses its live information to coordinate the Cursed faction's war effort. (Chapters 594, 610–616, and 1193)
- Logan Green: Logan controls the vessel's systems and executes the controlled Caladi crash, preserving the passengers and enough of the ship for later repair. (Chapters 1193, 1219, and 1244)
- Fex: Fex works with Sam to establish the ship's teleporter network during its conversion into a permanent base. (Chapter 594)
The vessel is never confirmed as the personal property of any single officer after it becomes the Cursed faction's shared home. References to command or leadership therefore describe operational authority, not a documented legal transfer of ownership. (Chapters 610–616 and 1193)
