Ronkin
Ronkin is an ordinary vampire guard assigned as Quinn's patrol partner after Quinn returns to the settlement under a concealed identity. His effort to support a sick son, grief for Nell, and distrust of the later wars turn him from an insecure low-ranking guard into a quiet ally of the man he once knew only as a colleague. (Chapters 2013–2023, 2083–2093, 2139, and 2211–2304)
Biography
Guard duty and the need to advance
Ronkin works outside the ninth castle and prides himself on punctual, routine patrols. He regards guard work as one of the settlement's lowest-status jobs and worries that children will mock a guard's family. He asks his unusually capable new partner Quinn to train him because his son has a rare vampire illness and higher rank or tournament winnings could pay for treatment. (Chapters 2013 and 2020)
In the guards' tournament, Ronkin reads an opponent's blood swipe and lands two aura slashes, but his strength, speed, and reflexes are insufficient against a fighter using Dalki blood. He is beaten unconscious and admits that he focused on reaching Nell without preparing for the opponents before him. Quinn secretly arranges through Edvard for valuable equipment to fund the son's care, but Ronkin is not told that Quinn is responsible. (Chapters 2020 and 2023)
Ronkin and the other guards later help injured travellers, then witness Quinn use shadow powers and command beasts during an attack. Their memories are altered afterward, so Ronkin attributes their survival and his son's treatment to Edvard rather than Quinn. The memory loss changes Ronkin's knowledge, not his identity or abilities. (Chapters 2027–2031, 2046, and 2060)
War, friendship, and promotion
Ronkin wants advancement to mean that he earned something rather than accepted a freely distributed title. When war with the Namriks begins, however, concern for Nell outweighs his status anxiety. He repeatedly asks about his friend and watches the conflict knowing ordinary guards are badly outmatched. (Chapters 2073 and 2081–2083)
Nell dies after asking Quinn to look after Ronkin, calling him an idiot with a heart of gold. Ronkin survives the Namrik campaign and is promoted to a hunting team because of his group's achievements. The promotion gives him a higher role, but it does not make him a leader-level fighter or grant a new named ability. (Chapters 2087–2093 and 2139)
Choosing Quinn over the later war
When the settlement prepares another campaign, Ronkin avoids a second farewell with his family because he cannot bear repeating it. Alone in the forest, he considers desertion but fears the consequences for them and admits he lacks the strength and resources to escape. He rejects the propaganda that calls Quinn a demon, reasoning that Quinn lived peacefully, defended friends, and may have been the unknown benefactor who cured his son. (Chapter 2211)
Quinn speaks to him through a shadow-infected owl beast and asks whether he would help stop the war. Ronkin agrees, wishing he had listened before Nell died, and joins Jeouk in covertly aiding Quinn and the Amra. During the battle, he recognises Quinn's intervention from the demon-tier beasts supporting their side. (Chapters 2211 and 2254)
After memories are restored, Ronkin learns that his former patrol partner was Quinn and repeatedly marvels that he failed to recognise him. The revelation reinterprets the rescues and his son's treatment without giving Ronkin access to Quinn's shadow network or other powers; those remain Quinn's actions. (Chapter 2304)
Hostage crisis and later life
An Immortui-controlled vampire takes Ronkin and a young girl hostage to force Quinn to choose. Ronkin silently urges Quinn to save the child, trusting him to protect Ronkin's family if he dies. Quinn uses a shadow decoy and hidden approach to save both, while Ronkin acknowledges that he had been ready to sacrifice himself. (Chapters 2313–2315)
Ronkin survives the crisis and returns to an ordinary working life. At his latest appearance he and Jeouk finish their regular jobs, meet Edvard in the market, and share a drink. Ronkin encourages the original leader by arguing that small contributions can accumulate into meaningful help, reflecting the modest service by which he supported Quinn despite never becoming exceptionally powerful. (Chapter 2360)
Appearance and personality
The supplied corpus does not establish Ronkin's hair colour, eye colour, height, or distinctive clothing. He is presented visually as a regular working vampire rather than through a fixed physical description. (Chapters 2013 and 2360)
Ronkin is punctual, friendly, self-conscious about status, and fiercely devoted to his family. Failure embarrasses him, but he continues training and accepts dangerous work to pay for his son's care. Nell's death and the manipulation of public memory make him more sceptical of authority, while his willingness to yield his life for a child shows the generosity others identify as his defining trait. (Chapters 2013–2020, 2083–2089, 2211, and 2315)
Powers and abilities
Vampire physiology and blood aura
Ronkin has ordinary vampire strength, speed, reflexes, healing, and blood-aura projection. In the guard tournament he dodges one blood swipe, attempts grappling, and throws two lines of aura that wound his opponent. His attacks are not deep enough to stop a physically enhanced fighter, who breaks his fingers, overwhelms him, and knocks him unconscious. (Chapter 2020)
No unique inherited ability is named for Ronkin. His later promotion follows service in the Namrik campaign, not a documented power awakening, and the corpus continues to describe him as comparatively weak. Shadow-infected beasts, memory alteration and restoration, and Quinn's hostage rescue are powers used on or around Ronkin rather than powers he possesses. (Chapters 2060, 2139, 2211, 2304, and 2315)
Guard and hunting skills
Ronkin has patrol experience, basic close combat, and enough field competence to join a hunting team. He reads simple blood-aura attacks and persists through pain, but lacks Nell's grappling technique and cannot match opponents boosted by Dalki blood. His greatest practical strength is cooperation: he works with guards, soldiers, Jeouk, and Quinn's shadow-beast network while understanding his own limits. (Chapters 2020, 2027, 2139, and 2211–2254)
Relationships
- Quinn: Ronkin knows Quinn first as a fellow guard. Quinn secretly funds his son's treatment and protects him repeatedly; once his memories return, Ronkin becomes an open admirer and trusted civilian ally.
- Nell: Nell is Ronkin's friend and tournament benchmark. Nell's death becomes the central reason Ronkin rejects the later war and chooses to help Quinn.
- Jeouk: Jeouk recruits Ronkin into covert support for Quinn. The two remain close and work ordinary jobs together after the war.
- Edvard: Edvard implements Quinn's plan to fund treatment and later drinks with Ronkin. Ronkin initially credits him for aid that Quinn arranged.
- Family: Ronkin's unnamed son suffers from a rare illness, and care for the boy and his wider family drives his work, training, and reluctance to desert. Their latest individual condition is not described.
