Rafer

Rafer Lyle is a heavily armoured Earthborn sergeant who serves as Longblade's frontline specialist and right-hand man. His admiration for strength develops into respect for the Cursed faction after they save his base, and he later leads a military hunting team during the Dalki war. (Chapters 1158–1182 and 1518–1523)

Biography

Defending the Cursed faction at Longblade's base

Rafer joins Longblade's expedition as its human shield, taking the front position because his build and armour make him difficult to bring down. He is eager to see Quinn fight and, when the demi-god-tier beast appears, obeys Longblade's order to support the Cursed group rather than compete with it. The battle confirms that his interest in their strength was justified: the outsiders save the soldiers from Pure and the beast, while their youngest-looking members display power beyond his expectations. (Chapters 1158–1167)

When Longblade is injured and places the visitors under Rafer's protection, Sergeant Till tries to turn the base against them. Rafer sees the fear in his own soldiers but chooses his commander's order and the debt they owe over that fear, insisting that the Cursed faction caused none of Longblade's injuries and saved their lives. He keeps the confrontation from becoming an attack, manages the visitors' access to the subsequent meeting, and apologises as they depart for the prejudice they faced. Selecting a wartime hunting team

By the later war, Rafer is identified as General Longblade's right-hand man and runs trials for a special beast-hunting unit. He selects Berg and Erin for the dangerous team, assigns less capable applicants to supported hunts, and refuses an older applicant whose need to protect his family does not compensate for failing the test. On the expedition, Rafer helps anchor the vehicle, watches how the recruits perform, and uses a beast shield against a flame attack while stronger specialists handle the main threat. He survives the defeat of a colossal monster with severe injuries; the corpus does not establish his recovery or later service. (Chapters 1518–1523)

Appearance and personality

Rafer is an exceptionally large man whose shoulders are described as nearly as broad as Quinn's entire body is long. He wears heavy armour from head to toe and resembles a tank when stationed at the front. He is talkative, direct, and openly enthusiastic about powerful fighters, but his most consequential trait is professional loyalty: he follows Longblade's orders under pressure and is willing to confront fellow soldiers when their fear threatens people under his protection.
