Nicu

Nicu is Bryce's younger son, a first-family descendant raised to inherit its leadership. He begins as an entitled student hostile to the tenth family, but frontline service teaches him respect for humans shortly before Erin kills him as part of her Dhampir campaign. (Chapters 708–723, 1348–1430, and 1495–1534)

Biography

First-family resentment at school

Nicu enters vampire school early after Quinn kills his older brother during the expedition crisis. He directs his grief toward the tenth family and assembles descendants to demand preferential treatment, arguing that their bloodlines make them more important to the vampires' future. His privilege is reinforced by being Bryce's intended heir. (Chapter 708)

During a capture-the-flag exercise, Nicu derides ordinary vampires and intends to use the rules to hurt tenth-family students. A Bloodsucker uses two of his companions as shields, causing Nicu's attack to kill them. Although he never intended their deaths, the shock and fear of losing his status lead him to conceal responsibility and blame Erin. (Chapters 713–719)

The lie culminates in a public duel. Nicu uses blood swipes and a controllable Blood Rise, but Erin reads and cuts through each attack, disarms him, and defeats him at close range. Confronted with the fact that she saved him in the forest, he breaks down and confesses; the corpus never specifies his punishment and suggests family influence may have suppressed it. Inheriting the first family

When the other leaders expose Bryce's sacrifices, Nicu initially insists his father could not be responsible while Kazz confesses what she knows. Nicu is left overseeing the first castle's inner area, and after Bryce's fall he becomes the young first-family leader. (Chapter 1348; Chapters 1374 and 1384)

Nicu resents Quinn's authority and is knocked unconscious when he protests a council decision, then trains under the new vampire king. In a virtual tournament, he enters confidently after surviving forced rituals intended to develop leader-level potential, but Sil's copied lightning destroys the entire arena before Nicu can act. The loss underlines his inexperience without erasing the potential other leaders recognise. (Chapters 1374, 1384, and 1428–1430)

Fighting beside humans

Nicu joins the allied war effort with Owen's Graylash forces. He initially treats the human army as competition and complains that vampire troops are being held in reserve, but accepts Owen's rotation strategy and promises to prove his family's strength in the next assault. (Chapter 1495)

Against an unusually fast four-spike Dalki, Nicu intervenes when Nate's shield cannot keep pace. He fights with a blood sword and swipes, survives repeated exchanges, and orders the remaining vampires to regroup as their enormous army is destroyed. Drinking fallen Dalki blood restores some energy, but fatigue and frustration still slow his reactions and leave him badly wounded. (Chapter 1516)

Erin's arrival saves the survivors from the remaining Dalki. Nicu orders proper burial for the dead and openly reframes the battle as a shared human–vampire victory, admitting that much of his contempt for humans came from Bryce's teaching. Just after he imagines future cooperation, Erin kills his remaining guards and decapitates him before he can defend himself. (Chapters 1524–1526)

Sam conceals Nicu's death temporarily so that the settlement will not learn its first leader has fallen while under attack. Later questions about his absence do not indicate survival; his body and head were recovered and his death is explicitly confirmed. (Chapters 1526, 1534, and 1553)

Appearance and personality

Nicu is introduced as a handsome young boy with blond hair gelled back and a black streak through its centre. He is younger than most vampire students and remains young when he becomes a family leader. His later armour and precise eye colour are not described. (Chapter 708; Chapter 1428)

He is proud, class-conscious, competitive, and initially prejudiced against both ordinary vampires and humans. He is also emotionally inexperienced: accidental deaths reduce him to panic, guilt, and an escalating lie. Later combat shows courage and responsibility, and his last reflections reject inherited hatred, though Erin kills him before that development can shape his rule. (Chapters 708–723 and 1495–1526)

Powers and abilities

Vampire physiology and blood control

As a direct first-family descendant, Nicu has enhanced vampire speed, strength, senses, healing, and blood aura. Even at school he fires multiple blood swipes and uses Blood Rise, cutting his palm to form a flexible airborne stream he can steer. Erin counters both by anticipating his motions and cutting apart the weaker aura. (Chapter 722)

Forced rituals later develop his potential toward vampire-lord level, though the corpus does not say that he completes that evolution. As first leader he moves fast enough to duel a four-spike Dalki, uses a sword and strong blood swipes, and gains energy by drinking Dalki blood. He can wound the opponent but cannot decisively defeat it, while accumulated fatigue and injuries degrade his judgement. (Chapters 1428 and 1516)

Swordsmanship and battlefield command

Nicu uses a blood weapon or red sword in later battles and coordinates first-family guards. He is brave under direct attack and recognises when regrouping is necessary, but remains inexperienced compared with older leaders. His decapitation occurs when he is already exhausted and unable to raise his sword, so it does not establish how a rested Nicu would fare against Erin. (Chapters 1384, 1446, and 1516–1526)

Relationships

• Bryce: Bryce is Nicu's father and intended predecessor. Nicu inherits his pride and hostility before beginning to question those teachings in war.
• Kazz: Kazz is Nicu's sister and Bryce's knight. Her confession breaks his denial of their father's crimes.
• Erin: Nicu frames Erin after accidentally killing classmates. She forces his confession, later saves his war party, and then kills him because he is a vampire.
• Quinn: Quinn killed Nicu's older brother, feeding Nicu's hatred of the tenth family. Nicu later serves under Quinn as vampire king without resolving that resentment.
• Owen and Nate: Fighting beside Owen and Nate changes Nicu's view of humans. Both come to respect his courage despite disliking his earlier attitude.
