Nathan

Nathan is a military officer who begins as the general responsible for the second base's first-year students and later serves the Earthborn and Cursed coalition. His career repeatedly places him between institutional orders and the people affected by them: he resists Duke's recruitment practices, protects students under his authority, commands joint operations in the Dalki war, and is eventually coerced into assisting Pure after the organisation takes hostages on Earth. (Chapters 48, 141, 955, 1193, and 1457–1458)

Biography

Protecting the academy's first years

Nathan enters the academy leadership as the general responsible for first-year students. Although he accepts that controlled student fighting is part of military culture, he challenges Duke when second-years organise a larger attack and later storms into Duke's interrogation of Peter, insisting that first-years fall under his own authority. His hostility toward Duke is not purely personal: Nathan objects to Duke bribing promising students with ability books, even while admitting that the base's recruitment quota makes the practice institutionally useful. (Chapters 48, 141, 151, and 284)

Nathan's concern for students operates within military secrecy rather than outside it. After Peter's unusual condition is investigated, he prioritises returning the student to class and avoiding needless alarm for Peter's parents. When a destructive fight later endangers spectators, Nathan and the sergeants deflect much of the debris before he orders everyone back to their dormitories. These choices show a protective administrator, but his role also makes him an interrogator: he questions Quinn, Vorden, and Fex when their identities or actions appear to threaten the base. Reassigned into the human coalition

After the human factions are reorganised, Nathan is described as a former general serving as one of the new sergeants, a demotion in title that does not end his command work. He supports Quinn's faction partly because its leader was once his student, temporarily takes command of a ship during the crisis surrounding Oscar, and represents the Earthborn contingent alongside Sach. His paper affiliation with the Cursed group makes some Earthborn personnel distrust him, while Nathan himself does not initially regard that affiliation as a personal identity. (Chapters 955–959, 1138, 1142, and 1176–1179)

Sam nevertheless entrusts Nathan with major field responsibility. Nathan joins the small force judged capable of confronting a demi-god-tier beast, then receives command of military groups sent to relieve Earthborn planets during the Dalki war. The assignment restores practical authority without erasing his divided position: he commands Cursed-labelled forces while still acting as an experienced Earthborn officer. Recovering the isolated shelter

Sent to investigate humans living under Dalki protection, Nathan refuses to repeat the earlier force's assumptions. He scouts the settlement, reasons that the residents may be prisoners rather than collaborators, and isolates a small group before committing his full force. When Ruby threatens his soldiers with the recovered demon-tier sword, he makes the morally harsh gamble of placing other residents in the attack's path because he believes she will not harm them; he then personally dislodges the weapon when she loses control of its activation. (Chapters 1227–1229)

Nathan retrieves the sword by coating himself in a bubble that keeps him from the frozen river and returns it to the human war effort. He then apologises for the military's earlier attack, questions Ruby rather than treating her as an enemy, and persuades her to help free the remaining residents. His reasoning is strategic as well as humanitarian—Ruby's information enables a coordinated assault—but the operation also becomes an attempt to correct an institutional wrong for which he was not personally responsible. Coercion during Pure's takeover

Nathan later enforces the Board's tournament arrangements and warns Quinn that openly leaving the grounds could ignite a wider war. His cooperation makes him appear complicit when the event is exposed as a Pure trap, but questioning establishes a narrower responsibility: Pure had simultaneously seized Earth, infiltrated military forces, and used officers' families as hostages. Nathan knew parts of its research programme and aided some plans under pressure, yet he did not know the full extent of the hybrid-beast programme or the captive Bree-family members. (Chapters 1404, 1431–1445, and 1456–1458)

Once compelled to answer, Nathan voluntarily explains enhancement, upgrade, and storage crystals, then submits to Quinn's influence so the group can verify what he does and does not know. He asks to join the mission to recover Earth because his family and other hostages remain there; Sam supports the request, while Leo is assigned to watch him. The corpus leaves Nathan alive and preparing to assist that counter-operation, but does not establish his fate after Chapter 1458. (Chapters 1456–1458)

Appearance and personality

Nathan is small, wears glasses, and dresses casually even for important occasions, a contrast to Duke's imposing build and formality. He often adjusts his glasses while assessing a problem. His manner can look detached or sarcastic, particularly around Duke, but his decisions consistently favour careful investigation, student welfare, and avoiding unnecessary casualties. Under pressure he can still make severe tactical choices, as when he uses civilians to deter a demon-tier attack, and his later cooperation with Pure shows that threats to family can override his institutional independence. Powers and abilities

Bubble ability

Nathan creates bubbles from his hands that enclose individuals or large groups. Against Peter, a full-body bubble drains the target's MC cells until he feels as though he has exhausted his ability in battle; a smaller bubble left around Peter's hands continues the suppression, although Peter's unusual body begins recovering while it remains active. This makes the technique useful for exposing transformations and restraining ability users, but the encounter also shows that recovery rate and nonstandard physiology can limit how completely it holds a target. (Chapters 284–285)

The bubbles also have defensive and environmental uses. Nathan encloses several civilians at once so they cannot alert nearby Dalki, and later coats his own body before entering a partly frozen river, preventing direct contact with the lethal ice and keeping water off his clothes. The ability cannot neutralise every threat: Nathan explicitly judges it useless against the demon-tier sword's freezing attack and relies on positioning, physical force, and Ruby's reluctance to harm civilians instead. Command and combat ability

Nathan is an experienced general who builds operations around reconnaissance, concentration of force, and controlled information. He selects ten soldiers whose quiet, high-output abilities can kill a Dalki in a coordinated burst, separates the settlement's patrols, and converts Ruby's local knowledge into a multipoint assault. He is also strong enough to help dislodge the activated demon-tier sword with bubbles protecting his hands and is counted among the six fighters capable of joining a demi-god-tier hunt, though the corpus does not give him a distinct martial style or weapon. Relationships

• Duke: Nathan and Duke openly dislike each other. Nathan challenges Duke's treatment of first-years and mocks his ability-book recruitment, but both continue working inside the same academy command structure. (Chapters 48, 141, and 284)
• Peter: Nathan's bubble exposes Peter's disguised identity and transformation power. He treats Peter as a security problem while also insisting that a first-year remains his responsibility, illustrating the protective and coercive sides of his office. (Chapters 222 and 284–285)
• Quinn: Nathan first knows Quinn as a student he interrogates and later supports the Cursed coalition partly because of what that former student achieves.
