Dober
Dober is an elder Amra creator and former tower climber who becomes one of his people's three leaders. His curiosity about the world beyond the tower makes him useful to Quinn first as a guide and navigator, then as the organiser whose forgers and technology sustain the Amra during the tower war. (Chapters 1728–1809 and 2154–2304)
Biography
Choosing creation over climbing
Dober once climbed the tower but abandoned that pursuit to study the wider world. Geo introduces him as one of the city's few skilled creators and blacksmiths, hoping his knowledge can help Quinn leave the planet. Dober's shop consequently becomes a practical stopping point rather than another challenge: he joins the expedition because Quinn needs parts, routes, and local knowledge that fighters alone cannot provide. (Chapters 1728 and 1733)
On the higher floors Dober notices trading stalls where spaceship components might be found and urges the group to pay attention to their surroundings. He accompanies Geo and Nock through Athos's shifting tower, observes the physical damage caused by the changing environment, and adapts to the higher floors after absorbing tower energy. These experiences vindicate his decision to learn beyond conventional climbing, since technical observation becomes the group's route toward escape. (Chapters 1751 and 1756–1761)
Opposing Athos and navigating home
When Quinn's fight with Athos spills across the tower, Dober joins Geo and Nock in throwing green rocks to interfere with the enemy. He says he has grown bored with the tower's antics and would accept dying in the attempt, making his participation a deliberate rejection of the system he left years before. The Amra survive Athos's defeat rather than winning the duel themselves, but their intervention aligns them openly with Quinn. (Chapters 1799–1801)
Dober then uses his long-standing interest in vessels and travel to navigate Sil between planets. Quinn no longer needs Dober to build an entire ship once Sil can move them, yet the route still depends on Dober's knowledge. Quinn rewards Dober, Geo, and Nock with celestial energy and warns that the blessing links their survival to his own; Dober subsequently becomes one of the three leaders of the improved Amra society. (Chapters 1806–1809 and 2154)
Forging for the tower war
During the later war Dober takes responsibility outside the tower while Geo and Nock enter it. He screens newcomers, decides whether their stated reasons are valid, and directs them toward the people they seek without needlessly exposing them to the tower. This division of labour establishes him as the leadership's technological and civic decision-maker rather than merely its oldest blacksmith. (Chapters 2187 and 2197)
Dober and the Amra forgers produce armour and weapons with designs unfamiliar to humans, prepare Quinn's moulds, and supply a concealed ship made from Sedron rock. He monitors Quinn's exhausting manufacturing work without interrupting it and brings news from outside. These choices turn his workshop skills into battlefield logistics: the forgers' constructed wall later keeps defenders alive when the returning leaders find the situation deteriorating. (Chapters 2154, 2200–2202, 2210–2215, and 2252)
When Peter kills Nock, Dober arrives to help the surviving Amra and laments that the younger leader died before him. He continues carrying messages with Ronkin and Jeouk rather than withdrawing in grief. After the war, Dober and Geo safely leave the tower with their people; he is alive at this final appearance, though the destruction of their city and planets leaves the group mourning and the corpus gives no later account of his fate. (Chapters 2248, 2261, and 2304)
Appearance and personality
Dober is repeatedly identified as an elder Amra. The species is four-armed, but the corpus does not isolate his individual height, colouring, dress, or facial features, so those details remain unknown. (Chapters 1728 and 1751)
He is observant, curious, and willing to depart from convention. Giving up tower climbing for creation is initially unusual among the Amra, but it makes him their best source of blacksmithing, navigation, and technological judgment. His dry willingness to die fighting Athos contrasts with his later care for exhausted workers and younger Amra, especially his grief over Nock. (Chapters 1728, 1751, 1799, 2215, and 2248)
Powers and abilities
Amra physiology and celestial blessing
As an Amra, Dober has the species' robust body and adapts to environmental changes in the tower after absorbing its energy. He can keep pace with Geo and Nock through dangerous floors and participates in their four-armed stone barrage, but the corpus gives him no named natural combat technique or individually measured feat. (Chapters 1757–1761 and 1799–1801)
Quinn places celestial energy in Dober alongside Geo and Nock. This makes the three the only Amra explicitly blessed by Quinn and places Dober among the race's strongest leaders, but Dober is not shown using a distinct celestial attack. The blessing's known cost is dependency: Quinn tells them that they will die if he dies. No later chapter establishes whether Dober retains, develops, or loses that energy after the war. (Chapters 1806–1809 and 2212)
Forging, engineering, and navigation
Dober is one of the city's best creators and blacksmiths. He recognises sources of spaceship parts, understands interplanetary routes, and can help direct Sil between planets. Later he organises forgers who create unusual armour and weapons, completes moulds for Quinn's production process, and provides a Sedron-rock ship. These are learned technical capabilities, not an ability-system power. (Chapters 1728, 1751, 1806, 2154, and 2200–2210)
His work is collaborative and materially constrained: the forgers need appropriate rock, equipment, moulds, and labour, while Quinn remains responsible for the special items he personally manufactures. The corpus does not explain Dober's forging process at a mechanical level or attribute every Amra-made object to his own hands. (Chapters 2200–2215 and 2252)
Relationships
- Geo: Geo trusts Dober enough to bring Quinn to him. They travel against Athos and later divide the responsibilities of Amra leadership between the tower and the outside population.
- Nock: Nock is Dober's younger fellow traveller and co-leader. Dober helps sustain the battlefield after Nock's death and openly mourns him.
- Quinn: Dober guides and equips Quinn's party, then supports his later manufacturing operation. Quinn's defeat of Athos improves Amra life and his blessing elevates Dober into the new leadership.
- Sil: Dober supplies the planetary knowledge Sil needs to navigate after Athos's fall.
- Ronkin: Dober escorts Ronkin and Jeouk when they bring an urgent message to the Amra forces.
Items
No manifest-configured inventory item is assigned to Dober. His shop tools, moulds, forged equipment, and Sedron-rock vessel belong to his work or the Amra community rather than a configured personal inventory.
