Calva
Calva is the ancient champion who ruled the Skully plane before Immortui and the demon kings conquered it. Once feared by the Skullys he dominated, imprisonment and the devastation of their world make him willing to cooperate with former subjects and outsiders. His knowledge of the champions and demon realm helps Quinn's allies assemble a resistance, while his unusually hard self-produced bone gives that resistance a powerful ranged and defensive combatant. (Chapters 2383, 2386, 2420, and 2456–2464)
Biography
A feared champion offered a second revolt
Before the demons arrive, Calva rules the Skully plane and is remembered as a champion who terrorised its villages. The source presents two views of that history: the Skullys say his temper could end in a village's destruction, while Calva later claims that challengers repeatedly sought him out and that he beat rather than deliberately killed them. After losing to Immortui, he is held in restraints that suppress his power and is brought to a Durum camp so the slaughtered Skullys there can pressure him into cooperation. The corpses disturb even Calva, but he remains realistic about his lack of attachment and about being unable to defeat Immortui alone. (Chapters 2383, 2386, and 2463)
Anon offers to free Calva in exchange for joining a renewed campaign against Immortui. Calva admits that his former self would never have considered such a bargain, yet tests whether the Skullys truly mean to ally with Quinn after identifying Quinn as a demon. When Quinn's transformation weakens Calva's restraints, Calva frees himself without accepting a formal obligation; nevertheless, he immediately carries Anon and the other Skullys away from the battlefield and later shields them from the fight's shockwave. Those actions begin to replace his subjects' fear with uncertainty about whether the old stories fully describe him. (Chapters 2386–2390 and 2422)
Choosing Quinn and gathering the champions
Calva first fears that transformed Quinn is no different from Immortui's demons, but observation changes his judgment. He recognises that Quinn is fighting on instinct rather than consciously targeting the Skullys, sees that Quinn remains considerate of them, and concludes that Quinn's strength creates a genuine chance to win. Calva's experience tells him that champions need to believe victory is possible; rather than accept Quinn's prediction that he will lose, Calva pushes him to explain a plan that can prevent another captivity under Immortui. (Chapters 2388–2391 and 2436–2438)
When Quinn asks for the blood of five demon kings, Calva recommends freeing the other champions and offers to persuade them. He travels with Sil, locates Pultra, explains the changed war, and shares what he knows about Immortui's earlier victory. He then helps bring Pultra and Shinto into the alliance, arguing that fear is real but that the inhabitants' lives under the demons cannot continue. His suggestions—using decoys, buying time against Luce, and collecting blood from more than one demon king—make him a practical planner as well as a guide through the red space. (Chapters 2443, 2456–2464, and 2467–2478)
Blood collection and the final battlefield
Calva fights beside the assembled champions while they seek the remaining demon blood. Against Unzoku, he recognises that the champions cannot match the demon king directly and offers his own body, as well as Pultra's, for Chris to consume if that is the only way to give their side a chance. He means the offer, although Shinto's immediate suicide makes Calva admit that he might not have possessed the same resolve. After Chris damages Unzoku, Calva catches the thrown flesh on a bone spear so Pultra can drain its blood, completing an essential part of the plan without claiming Chris's victory as his own. (Chapters 2517–2520)
Calva remains uneasy when the conflict expands to Celestials and divine beings whose hierarchy he does not understand. Even so, he joins the last battlefield rather than retreating: a massive bone spear pierces several Divine beings, and a precise head strike from him is strong enough to kill a Dark being in one blow. Chapter 2533 is his final on-page appearance; it shows him alive and fighting, but the corpus does not establish what happens to him after that battle. (Chapters 2524–2525 and 2533)
Appearance and personality
Calva is an imposing Skully with a skull-like face, large hands, and a body capable of producing a white, hard bone covering. He is large enough to carry three ordinary Skullys at once, and can extend the bone of an arm into a shield or spear. His blood-covered, wounded appearance at the Durum camp frightens the observers even though he shows little outward pain. The corpus does not provide a precise height, clothing description, or age. (Chapters 2383, 2389, 2419, and 2443)
He is proud, blunt, and accustomed to measuring choices by survival and strength. Calva does not pretend to be selfless: he says he has cared for no one, acknowledges that he is poor at cooperation, and openly admits fear. At the same time, he is tactically observant, honours useful commitments in practice, and increasingly acts for people he once ignored. His willingness to protect the Skullys, encourage Shinto, and risk being consumed for the war marks a real change in conduct, even though the source never depicts him renouncing his old violence in explicit moral terms. (Chapters 2383, 2386–2389, 2463, 2469, and 2518)
Powers and abilities
Champion physique and combat experience
Calva is naturally stronger and faster than ordinary Skullys and has enough raw power to compete with demon kings, although Kronker defeats him and Immortui remains far beyond him. He can carry multiple people while moving at high speed, leap over a fortified camp, withstand serious wounds, and react quickly enough to catch Unzoku's airborne flesh with a spear. Thousands of years of battle make him an accurate evaluator of energy, tactics, and morale, but unfamiliar abilities and divine systems can still leave him dependent on allies who understand them. (Chapters 2383–2385, 2389, 2438, 2469, 2519, and 2525)
Bone production and shaping
Calva produces an almost unlimited supply of special bone from his body. It is harder and can be sharpened more finely than ordinary Skully exoskeleton: even an amateur using one of his bone swords could cut diamond and Durum crystal. He forms spears from his forearms or hands, extends an arm into a broad shield, closes that shield around an opponent's limb, and grows internal bone to halt and expel a spear that has pierced his torso. This shaping protects him from penetration but not from overwhelming force, power suppression, or an enemy able to turn his own weapon back on him. (Chapters 2419–2420, 2436, and 2443)
Calva also uses the material at range. He can fire multiple spikes from his back with enough accuracy and infused energy to tear through blood constructs, throw spears through aerial targets, and produce a large spear capable of impaling several Divine beings. A perfect hit to a Dark being's head can kill it outright, but stronger opponents such as demon-form Quinn can catch, redirect, or survive his attacks. (Chapters 2422, 2489–2492, and 2533)
White energy
Calva channels a white energy through his body and bone. He uses an explosive release of it to break weakened restraints and later projects enough power to divide an incoming shockwave around the Skullys behind him. The energy also infuses his bone attacks, but the corpus does not name it as a separate system or explain how it is replenished. Immortui's colour-draining field suppresses Calva almost completely, showing that this reserve can be neutralised. (Chapters 2389–2390, 2436, and 2489)
Relationships
- Quinn: Calva initially identifies Quinn as a demon and fears his uncontrolled form. Watching Quinn protect the Skullys and challenge Immortui convinces him that Quinn represents their best chance, so Calva helps gather champions and demon blood for Quinn's plan. (Chapters 2386–2391, 2438, and 2443–2485)
- Anon: Anon confronts the champion his people fear and asks him to join a common revolt. Calva never formally completes their bargain, but saves Anon from the battlefield and accepts his presence, giving the Skully a practical answer through action. (Chapters 2385–2390 and 2422)
- Sil: Sil provides the mobility and strength needed to find the other champions, while Calva supplies local knowledge and introductions. Calva comes to trust Sil's calm judgment even in situations involving powers he cannot understand. (Chapters 2459–2469)
- Pultra: Calva recruits his fellow champion and works with her on strategy, demon-blood collection, and the final campaign. Their shared history does not erase disagreement: Pultra objects when Calva offers both of their lives to strengthen Chris. (Chapters 2460–2464, 2478, and 2517–2520)
- Immortui: Immortui defeats and imprisons Calva, leaving a fear response that persists long after their first battle. Calva's decision to cooperate with former enemies is driven by the need to prevent that rule from continuing. (Chapters 2383, 2386, 2433–2438, and 2464)
