Anton
Anton is a vampire noble who leads a reinforced hunting team into the forest outside the re-established settlement. His priority is bringing his people home alive, and his cautious leadership preserves the last surviving team until Quinn reveals enough power to open an escape route. (Chapters 2028–2044)
Biography
Leading the forest expedition
Anton heads a group of talented vampires sent to investigate losses among earlier scouts. He tells them to conserve energy and makes their safe return more important than a triumphant report. When hidden beasts attack, he joins the fighting, reorganises the team into a circle that covers every direction, and uses faster scouts rather than entering an unknown tree shelter blindly. (Chapters 2028–2030)
He also prevents social divisions from weakening the expedition. When hunters mock Quinn, Ronkin, and Nell as mere guards, Anton insists that everyone is one group and may need one another. His judgment proves correct, although he does not yet know why Quinn was assigned to the mission. (Chapter 2030)
Retreat trapped in a living maze
After a demon-tier owl appears and one guard dies, Anton orders a retreat rather than protect the team's pride. The forest repeatedly returns them to the same giant tree, however, and disagreement over direction threatens cohesion. Anton rests the group, listens to competing proposals, and eventually permits Quinn to lead because none of their own methods are breaking the loop. (Chapters 2030–2035)
When the path closes behind them, Anton refuses to sacrifice a guard as a test and advances in front of the others to face three intelligent demon-tier beasts. He attempts negotiation once he sees the corpses of every other hunting team, offering territorial separation and warning that killing them will provoke the settlement's leaders. The beasts' strength leaves him unable to enforce those terms, but his choices continue to centre on preserving the remaining lives. (Chapters 2035–2036)
Escape and report to Edvard
Quinn finally exposes overwhelming blood aura and destroys the vine barrier. Anton correctly reads that the disguised guard will not keep shielding spectators and leads most of the team out while Quinn holds the beasts. The retreating vampires still encounter lesser beasts and rely on limited green blood boosts, yet Anton brings them back to recognisable terrain. (Chapters 2043–2044)
Anton worries that leaving Quinn was wrong but accepts that the group could not help against such enemies. He prepares an immediate report, meets Edvard, and gives a full account before leading the ninth leader back toward the battle. Anton is alive at this last appearance; the corpus does not record the expedition's later consequences for him. (Chapter 2044)
Appearance and personality
Anton is a middle-aged vampire noble with slightly spiked hair. He wears black, has several stripes on his shoulder marking authority, and carries a thin rapier. No eye colour, exact height, facial features, or family resemblance is supplied. (Chapter 2028)
He is cautious, responsible, pragmatic, and protective. Anton can admit when his team is outmatched, treats guards more fairly than some subordinates do, and acts first when leadership requires risk. Fear makes him plead with the demon-tier beasts, but not abandon his duty to negotiate or report. (Chapters 2028–2044)
Powers and abilities
Noble vampire physiology and blood aura
As an evolved noble vampire, Anton possesses enhanced strength, speed, senses, endurance, healing, and blood aura. He channels red aura through his rapier to cut hostile plants, and he can fight the lesser beasts encountered by the expedition. The corpus does not assign him a family ability, Qi stage, soul weapon, or measured aura level. (Chapters 2028–2029 and 2035)
His limits are explicit. Regenerating vines replace what he cuts, a demon-tier owl's pressure buckles the group's legs, and the combined hunting team cannot breach a barrier that Quinn destroys with one blood spear. Anton therefore avoids presenting ordinary noble strength as sufficient against the evolved beasts. (Chapters 2030, 2035–2036, and 2043)
Rapier combat and command
Anton wields a narrow rapier with enough force and aura to sever thick plants and pierce a beast's head through concentrated energy at the tip. He combines personal combat with scanners, scouts, defensive formations, rotating guards, and prompt retreat orders. These applications make him an effective expedition leader even though the weapon's tier, material, skills, and origin are never named. (Chapters 2028–2031)
No later battle demonstrates progression. At his latest appearance he remains able to lead survivors and guide Edvard, but his maximum attack and condition after the return journey are unknown. (Chapter 2044)
Relationships
- Quinn: Anton initially treats Quinn as an attached guard, then trusts his route and follows the escape Quinn opens after witnessing his hidden strength. (Chapters 2028–2044)
- Ronkin and Nell: Anton defends the guards from hunters' contempt and recognises them as members of the team. (Chapter 2030)
- Edvard: Edvard arranged for the guards to join Anton's party, receives his report, and orders him to guide the return to Quinn. (Chapter 2044)
- Stin: Anton checks Stin's worst impulses, including the suggestion that a guard be sacrificed to test the maze. (Chapters 2030 and 2035)
Items
No manifest-configured inventory item is assigned to Anton. His rapier, scanners, green-blood supplies, and communication device are unnamed expedition equipment rather than catalogue items.
