Granny Lee

Granny Lee is an elderly Jin Hwa Apartments resident whose seemingly deranged door-world counterpart has adopted that behavior as protection against abusive neighbors.

Biography

Survival through apparent madness

Wen Qing remembers Granny Lee as orderly and neatly dressed, making the mute old woman carrying a dirty bowl behind the Ghost Fetus's door especially disturbing. Granny Lee follows Chen Ge because she recognizes his attempt to expose the tenants' crimes, and he realizes that her apparent madness is a survival strategy. She silently assists his investigation before remaining behind to care for the injured Uncle Huang and Jia Fu. (Chapters 1077–1089)

The apartment's recordings expose the cruelty associated with her son and the altar built around her black-and-white photograph. When the Ghost Fetus's world collapses, Granny Lee's counterpart disappears rather than surviving as a dead tenant. Chen Ge interprets that disappearance as good news: the real Granny Lee is probably still alive outside the door, leaving open the possibility that her abuse can still be stopped. Appearance and personality

Behind the door, Granny Lee is an elderly, mute woman with stained hands who carries a dirty china bowl and initially makes only gargling sounds. Wen Qing remembers her real-world appearance as meticulous, with her hair in a neat bun and her clothes free of creases. Her silence and apparent confusion conceal caution, endurance, and an ability to understand Chen Ge's intentions. (Chapters 1077–1089)

Skills and supernatural abilities

No formal supernatural ability is established. Her chief means of survival is behavioral: by appearing harmless and deranged, she avoids drawing the full attention of the apartment's violent residents and can follow people without being treated as an immediate threat. (Chapters 1077–1089)
