Daimen Kazinski

Daimen Kazinski is Zorian Kazinski's celebrated eldest brother, an explorer and dimensionalist whose success shaped the family's expectations long before he appears in person. His expeditions in Koth bring the brothers together over the Imperial Orb, while his concealed empathy and willingness to join the Key hunt reveal both genuine excellence and serious blind spots. Their cooperation gradually replaces rivalry with a more equal, if still abrasive, sibling alliance.

Biography

The celebrated brother in Koth

Zorian and Zach find Daimen living under House Taramatula protection in Koth, engaged to Orissa Siqi Taramatula and leading the search for a lost imperial expedition. Daimen initially doubts their identities and treats their impossible abilities as a potential trap, using exotic detection spells, a remote sensor, Mind Blank, and several privacy wards before trusting a gate to Eldemar. His caution demonstrates why he succeeds as an explorer: curiosity never entirely displaces operational suspicion, even when his younger brother offers apparently miraculous help. (Chapter 67)

The reunion also exposes injuries that professional competence cannot solve. Daimen is accustomed to being admired and reads Zorian's hostility as irrational sibling resentment, while Zorian sees him as the standard their parents used to diminish everyone else. Their argument over innate empathy is decisive. Daimen admits he recognized a similar trait in Zorian but never explained it, partly because Zorian hated him and partly because secrecy had benefited Daimen. Zorian answers that unmanaged empathy made crowds painful and distorted his childhood, forcing Daimen to recognize that the same gift had not treated them equally. (Chapter 68)

Their expedition into the Green Hell makes collaboration unavoidable. Daimen directs a large team through dangerous terrain, reacts quickly when Princess attacks, and continues the search despite injuries and dissent. Zorian's Key divination finally identifies the “palace” as a pocket dimension hidden inside the orb itself. Daimen helps investigate the site and transports the materialized glass globe, but the find immediately attracts political pressure from houses, states, and researchers. The discovery vindicates Daimen's long pursuit while also making possession of the artifact too consequential to remain a private expedition prize. (Chapters 68–71)

Koth brings family politics into the same crisis. Daimen wants Cikan Kazinski and Andir Kazinski to accept Orissa, yet knows they will judge the engagement through reputation and commercial interest. He asks Zorian for support and later learns how little he understood Kirielle's fear of an arranged marriage or Fortov's academic collapse. These disclosures do not absolve Zorian's hostility or Daimen's neglect, but they shift the brothers' conflict away from a simple contest of talent. Daimen begins treating Zorian as a person whose judgment matters, not merely the difficult younger sibling he remembers. (Chapters 67, 71–72, and 76)

Dimensionalist and temporary looper

Once the full shape of the Sovereign Gate problem is known, Daimen's network and dimensional expertise become crucial. He supports the search for the imperial staff in Blantyrre, works with Orissa and the Taramatula to launch an expensive expedition, and cooperates with Zorian, Zach, Xvim, and other specialists. The alliance gives him access to impossible evidence and techniques while demanding unusual trust: Zorian knows the goals and deadlines, but Daimen must repeatedly act on discoveries that outstrip any ordinary expedition's planning horizon. Daimen eventually receives a temporary marker and spends the extended cycles working as an active looper. The time permits compressed growth in advanced dimensionalism and supports the group's escape research. During that period he also undergoes a permanent enhancement ritual using phase-spider traits, gaining the ability to create a small personal pocket dimension. The alteration is a structural capability rather than a conventional spell, but it belongs to the temporary-loop copy of Daimen whose body and memories exist inside the Gate's world. (Chapter 89)

When the escape begins, Daimen joins the temporary loopers holding the collapsing bridge long enough for Zorian and Zach to cross. He does not escape with them. The outside-world Daimen is a separate native continuation who remains alive without the temporary copy's year of memories or embodied training. Records and memory crystals can convey information afterward, but they do not make the native Daimen literally continuous with the sacrificed copy or automatically restore every practiced skill and enhancement. His participation is therefore both a major contribution and a loss that the surviving brother cannot personally remember. (Chapters 91 and 93)

Brother and senior ally in the real month

Zorian recruits the native Daimen by approaching House Taramatula with knowledge no stranger should possess. The Imperial Orb and Kael's notebooks give the story physical credibility, while Zorian's changed skill and understanding of family matters make dismissal increasingly difficult. Daimen briefly takes the orb while evaluating the claim, then returns it and agrees to help. His choice is not blind acceptance: he questions Zorian closely and joins because the evidence and the stakes withstand scrutiny. (Chapter 99)

During the invasion, Daimen fights as an experienced senior mage rather than attempting to reproduce the vanished looper's path. He conjures a giant against a skeletal dragon, supports Zorian beneath the battle in the sky, and presses the attack on Jornak when the coalition fractures. His presence beside Xvim and Alanic gives Zorian both protection and oversight. After Jornak is disarmed, Daimen keeps the Imperial Dagger away from him while Zorian conducts the final mental confrontation. (Chapters 101–103 and 106)

The aftermath leaves the brothers with a workable relationship. Daimen helps manage their parents' arrival, recognizes Kirielle's nervousness, and tries to keep Cikan's demands from turning immediately into a family rupture. Zorian accepts his opinion without the old instinctive fury at comparison, while Daimen notices that the formidable time traveler still values his approval. Their childhood hierarchy has not disappeared, and Daimen remains capable of condescension, but excellence is no longer the only fact defining them: they have trusted one another with artifacts, battle, and family vulnerabilities. Appearance and personality

Daimen is an adult man whose confident posture and animated gestures suit an accomplished explorer used to leadership. He paces when frustrated, runs his hands through his hair during arguments, and becomes visibly energized by a difficult expedition problem. His regular field work favors practical travel clothing and equipment, though no single uniform or distinctive physical feature defines him. Family resemblance is less important to his presentation than alert observation and the ease with which he occupies authority. (Chapters 67–72)

He is intelligent, ambitious, cautious, sociable, and self-assured. Daimen can organize specialists across continents and react sensibly to impossible magic, but confidence in his own read of people creates blind spots. Secret empathy taught him that emotions were information he could control, so he underestimated how badly Zorian suffered from the same bloodline trait and how little Fortov or Kirielle trusted the family. When confronted, he can become defensive, yet he also listens, revises plans, and acts on uncomfortable knowledge rather than dismissing it permanently. (Chapters 67–72, 76, and 107)

Dimensionalism and expedition magic

Daimen is a master dimensionalist capable of teaching, analyzing, and eventually casting the Gate spell after instruction from Zorian. He uses dimensional sensing in the Koth ruins, supports the study and transport of the Imperial Orb, and brings practical experience to searches spanning Koth and Blantyrre. His field repertoire also includes layered privacy, detection, remote-sensing, and anti-mental-interference measures. The exact boundaries of his spell list are not enumerated, but his work consistently places him among the coalition's senior dimensional specialists. (Chapters 67–71 and 78–89)

Empathy and mental awareness

Daimen is innately empathic. Unlike Zorian's uncontrolled childhood sensitivity, his weaker gift is naturally selective enough to focus on individuals without producing crowd headaches. An older empath taught him to switch the ability on and off and sharpen its sensitivity, and he kept it secret because unnoticed emotional knowledge improved his negotiations and investigations. He never develops Zorian's broad mind sense or aranean-style psychic repertoire; the two brothers share an origin trait, not an identical degree or form of mind magic. (Chapters 68 and 74)

Combat and command

Exploration has made Daimen a powerful, experienced combat mage and team leader. He raises a force wall quickly enough to shield much of an expedition from Princess's wind-laced roar, coordinates retreat and medical response after casualties, and later conjures a giant capable of pinning a skeletal dragon. He is not presented as Zach's equal in direct destructive combat, but he can assess elite threats, operate under rapidly changing conditions, and contribute meaningfully beside archmages and battle specialists. • Zorian Kazinski: Daimen begins as the brilliant standard against which Zorian has always been measured. Their empathy argument, Koth expedition, and escape preparations replace mutual caricatures with collaboration, allowing Zorian to acknowledge Daimen's ability without defining himself by it. • Orissa Siqi Taramatula: Orissa is Daimen's fiancée and political partner in Koth.
