Family plans and resistance

Cikan enters Zorian's story while preparing to leave Cirin for Koth. She criticizes his travel clothes, uses breakfast as the opening to a request, and attempts to place nine-year-old Kirielle in his care for the journey's duration. The arrangement serves Cikan's priorities—supporting Daimen's affairs abroad while keeping Kirielle supervised—but gives little weight to either younger child's wishes. Zorian refuses, recognizing a familiar pattern in which his mother packages an order as family duty and expects resistance to yield to guilt. (Chapter 1)

Her authority rests on real achievement as well as pressure. Cikan was raised by one of the region's few remaining witches and married Andir Kazinski when both were young. The journey also exposes a limit to their control: Daimen can conceal his movements, choose his partner, and manage the meeting through magic and Taramatula support. Aftermath and reduced control

During the final month, Zorian takes Kirielle to Cyoria and teaches her despite knowing Cikan would object. The invasion then leaves both children in a city their parents consider intolerably dangerous. When Cikan and Andir reach Cyoria a month later, she immediately demands to know why the siblings have not returned to Cirin. Kirielle says she likes the city and has friends there, but Cikan orders her quiet and continues discussing her placement with the older brothers. The reunion shows that Cikan has not abandoned her habits, yet the family around her has changed. Zorian no longer becomes defensive under his parents' scrutiny, Daimen knows enough of Kirielle's situation to support her, Fortov's difficulties can no longer be dismissed as simple laziness, and Kirielle openly states what she wants. Cikan can still command a conversation, but she cannot erase the alliances her children formed during the crisis or simply reverse Zorian's decision to begin Kirielle's magical education. Cikan is a mature woman whose presentation reflects her concern for social respectability. She expects expensive, appropriate clothing even for an ordinary train journey and evaluates Zorian's appearance as though it represents the entire family.
