Imperial Orb

The Imperial Orb, also called the Orb of the First Emperor, is a glass sphere that contains a vast pocket world and forms one of the five components of the Key to the Sovereign Gate. Its interior palace, archives, ruins, and capacity to hold living beings make it the most versatile of the imperial artifacts recovered by Zorian and Zach.

History

The hidden palace in Koth

Zorian joins Daimen's search for the vanished Ikosian expedition in Koth and discovers that the fabled palace is not merely hidden by a pocket dimension: the pocket world itself is an artifact. Once he understands its dimensional structure, he materializes the hand-sized glass orb in the outside world and helps transport it to Cyoria. The recovery gives Zorian and Zach both a component of the Key and access to an imperial complex that ordinary travel could never reach. (Chapters 69 and 71)

Archive, refuge, and arsenal

The orb's self-contained world becomes the pair's largest secure workspace. They explore its palace and ruins, study surviving records, store equipment and creatures, build golems, and move allies without exposing them to ordinary routes. Because the artifact can be hidden and carried while retaining its internal space, it supports repeated expeditions and research programs whose scale would otherwise be impossible within a month. (Chapters 73–90)

The interior also provides a foundation for experiments with accelerated time. Researchers adapt part of the orb into an improved Black Room, allowing the coalition to extend the effective duration of its final preparations. This use turns the artifact from a container into infrastructure: its value lies not only in what it preserves, but in the independent environment it makes available to Zorian's growing alliance. (Chapters 83–90)

Bridge out of the loop

When the expected exit fails, the coalition uses the loop's copy of the orb as the anchor for a physical bridge between realities. Divine power strengthens the artifact while it supports the spatial and temporal stresses of the passage. The attempt carries Zorian's soul into the real world, but destroys the simulated copy of the orb together with much of the accumulated equipment and research inside it. (Chapter 91)

Recovery and the final bargain

Zorian later retrieves the real-world orb in Koth and again uses its interior to transport constructs and prepare for the invasion. During the battle for Cyoria, he needs Oganj to withdraw from the city. An angelic envoy accepts the orb in trust as part of an agreement promising the artifact to the dragon, trading one of Zorian's greatest strategic assets for the removal of a threat his coalition cannot safely ignore. (Chapters 96, 99, and 101–103)

Abilities and properties

  • The orb contains a stable pocket world large enough for an imperial palace, extensive ruins, living creatures, workshops, stores, and military constructs. Its external form remains small enough to carry by hand. (Chapters 69–90)
  • Living beings and objects can enter, remain within, and later emerge, allowing the orb to serve as concealed transport, refuge, archive, and arsenal. Access and movement still require dimensional expertise and preparation. (Chapters 71–90)
  • The interior supports large-scale research and construction, including golem production and a modified Black Room. These facilities are built or adapted by the users rather than automatic powers of the orb. (Chapters 78–91)
  • As a component of the Key, the orb contributes to the authorization needed to open the Sovereign Gate's exit. It is also strong enough, when reinforced by divine power, to anchor the coalition's emergency bridge, though that use destroys the loop copy. (Chapters 89–91)
  • Divination does not reveal every property of the artifact, and its deepest imperial functions remain only partly understood. (Chapters 69–90)
