Imperial Dagger

The Imperial Dagger, also called the Dagger of the First Emperor, is a divine weapon kept in Eldemar's royal treasury and one of the five components of the Key. Its basic power cuts immaterial spirits, while alternate modes learned by Jornak let it penetrate defenses that ordinary weapons cannot breach.

History

Raids on the royal treasury

Zorian and Zach first confirm the dagger's location while testing the palace wards. They later enter the royal treasury with Quatach-Ichl, but the lich claims the dagger as his share of the raid and only yields it after the boys confront him for the imperial crown. By later restarts, their accumulated knowledge of the treasury lets them steal the dagger without his assistance and assemble it with the other four Key artifacts. The Guardian identifies its controller-only function as soulkill: marking a target so that the time loop will not recreate that soul in later restarts. (Chapters 83, 85, and 89)

Jornak's spirit-cutting weapon

In the real month, Jornak steals the original dagger from the royal vaults and carries it as his most familiar possession. Years of repeated recovery and experimentation have taught him modes beyond its better-known anti-spirit function. During his final confrontation with Zorian, the blade glows faintly purple and passes through the Defense Cube's layered shield and reinforced metal in the false accounts he and Zach experience. The true sequence reveals that Zorian avoids the strike, subdues Jornak, and removes the dagger; Daimen later handles it while the surviving allies confront Zorian over his deception. Abilities and properties

• Its ordinary divine function allows the blade to hurt immaterial spirits, described as cutting what cannot normally be cut. (Chapter 85)
• The controller can use it to mark a soul for permanent exclusion from later restarts, the effect Jornak calls soulkill. This function belongs to the dagger's role within the time loop rather than its ordinary use as a weapon. (Chapter 85)
• Jornak activates an alternate purple-glowing mode that ignores the Defense Cube's complex magical shielding and slices through alchemically reinforced metal. The mode's operating principle is not known. (Chapters 104–105)
• The gleaming dagger is a divine artifact and a component of the Key. No detailed material composition or ornament pattern is known. (Chapters 85 and 89)
