Whitey

Whitey is Zhang Yang's Gold-Eared Bear King, a living companion used both as a ground battle mount and, after Beast Taming is learned, as a normal combat pet. Its shared health, charge, recovery, and frost resistance make it a strong early partner, while later content narrows its role toward travel and situational utility. (Chapters 220–242, 290, 332–365, 562, 700, and 805)

Biography

Thunderstorm Castle and the Chaos Realm

Zhang Yang first seals the Bear King's Cub with the Leash of Gold-Eared Bear King. The Level 0 cub nuzzles his feet, bites his trousers, rolls over for attention, and cannot be ridden until Level 30, so it begins as an affectionate follower rather than instant transportation. By Level 27 it has grown to the size of a calf, and at Level 30 it becomes a roughly three-meter adult with white fur and golden ear tips. Zhang Yang names the bear Whitey and gains access to Shared Life and Wild Charge. (Chapters 220–221)

Whitey quickly becomes part of Zhang Yang's combat rhythm. Shared Life combines their health while Zhang Yang rides, and Wild Charge closes a short gap and briefly stuns a target. Once Beast Taming lets the same creature operate as both mount and normal pet, Zhang Yang teaches it Icy Build and Wild Recovery. In Frozen Fractal, the resulting frost resistance lets Whitey tank ordinary frost casters, while charging, healing, and alternating aggression with Zhang Yang help them defeat Luke Vick even though the boss cannot be interrupted by the charge. (Chapters 221, 227, and 236–242)

Outside direct boss fights, Whitey becomes a dependable carrier and rescue companion. It helps transport Tiffany, uses recovery during dangerous travel, carries Meryl while Zhang Yang protects her, and serves as the faster land option when the Mythical Turtle is too slow. Its limits become increasingly visible as progression continues: the text anticipates that a Yellow-Gold bear will fall behind around player Level 110, Zhang Yang often prefers the tougher turtle for bosses, and Whitey must be dismissed where Dig or terrain requires a different approach. (Chapters 290, 332, 338, 349, and 363–365)

Late encounters confirm that decline without removing Whitey's niche. Against a boss that resists nature damage, Zhang Yang summons the bear despite limited support, but its aura-enhanced 36,200 health is erased immediately by a ray. In a later dungeon it lacks an area attack and is outperformed against groups by Zhang Yang's Blades Fan. Whitey nevertheless remains available: after landing on the flying Phoenix Pet, Zhang Yang switches to the bear to approach a cliff city by ground at its latest appearance. It survives in the roster as a specialized land mount rather than a discarded object. (Chapters 562, 700, and 805)

Whitey should not be confused with Whitey Jr. In Chapter 488 Zhang Yang gives that name to a separate Snow-Scale Wind Serpent specifically because the white bear is already called Whitey; the serpent is not an alias, evolution, or offspring of the Gold-Eared Bear King. (Chapter 488)

Appearance and personality

As a cub, Whitey is small, playful, and physically affectionate, nuzzling Zhang Yang, tugging his clothes, and exposing its belly. Its adult form is a massive white-furred bear approximately three meters tall with distinctive golden ear tips. The growth occurs through leveling rather than a change of species. (Chapters 220–221)

Whitey does not speak or express an independent long-term objective. Its documented personality is animal and companionable: it seeks attention as a cub, obeys combat and travel commands, and carries vulnerable passengers when directed. Wei Yan Er responds warmly to it, reinforcing its role as a familiar party companion rather than an inventory prop. (Chapters 220–221, 236, 332, and 338)

Abilities and gameplay

Whitey has two related but mechanically distinct configurations. In mount mode it combines health with Zhang Yang through Shared Life and offers mounted attacks and movement; after Beast Taming, pet mode gives the bear its own defense and access to learned pet skills. The distinction determines which defenses and special properties apply, so results from one mode cannot automatically be assigned to the other. (Chapters 221, 227, and 236)

Shared Life and mount combat

Shared Life adds Whitey's health to Zhang Yang's while mounted, producing 25,560 combined health when the skill is first demonstrated. Attacks against the mounted pair use Zhang Yang's defenses and defensive passives rather than Whitey's independent pet-mode defense. Mount mode includes Wild Charge and Claw Attack in addition to mobility, giving Zhang Yang a larger health pool and a way to initiate, but it does not preserve every pet-mode passive. (Chapters 221 and 236)

Wild Charge works from two to ten meters away, costs twenty Focus, stuns for one second, and has a thirty-second cooldown. Alert opponents can anticipate or counter the rush, and the skill cannot interrupt every boss even when it connects. Zhang Yang's mounted Backspin maneuver is a rider technique performed with Whitey's movement, not an innate bear skill that Whitey uses independently. (Chapters 227 and 240–242)

Pet mode, recovery, and frost resistance

After Beast Taming, Whitey can be summoned as a normal pet and learn pet skill books. Its pet-mode list includes Wild Charge, Claw Attack, Wild Recovery, and Icy Build. Icy Build reduces frost damage by ninety percent, enabling Whitey to withstand frost casters that would be more dangerous to an ordinary pet. Wild Recovery spends ten Focus to restore five percent of Whitey's health each second for ten seconds and then enters a two-minute cooldown. (Chapter 236)

At Level 60 the bear has 16,800 health, 1,200 defense, and an attack range of 3,692–3,892 per three seconds. Those are progression-stage values, not permanent endgame statistics. In pet mode, Zhang Yang can alternate aggression with Whitey and time recovery to stabilize the bear, but boss immunity can nullify the charge's interruption and powerful late attacks can kill it before recovery matters. (Chapters 236 and 240–242)

Progression limits

Whitey's Yellow-Gold quality gives it exceptional value when acquired, but the setting's later Mythical, Ethereal, Holy, and higher companions surpass that tier. The corpus explicitly forecasts reduced usefulness near Level 110, shows the Mythical Turtle preferred for demanding bosses, and later demonstrates both inadequate health against burst damage and the absence of area attacks. Dismissal after defeat is temporary—its leash permits resummoning after ten minutes—but a revive timer does not solve the underlying damage, survivability, or targeting mismatch. (Chapters 220, 290, 363, 562, and 700)

Relationships

  • Zhang Yang: Whitey's bonded master, rider, trainer, and principal combat partner. He raises it from Level 0, names it, teaches it pet skills, and continues choosing it when ground movement is more useful than late-game aerial power. (Chapters 220–242 and 805)
  • Wei Yan Er: A party member who treats Whitey affectionately and travels alongside it during its early growth. (Chapters 220–221)
  • Phoenix Pet: Zhang Yang's later flying battle companion. The Phoenix surpasses Whitey in combat and air travel, but Whitey remains the practical replacement for grounded approaches and situations where the Phoenix would be conspicuous. (Chapters 620–625, 699, and 805)
  • Tiffany and Meryl: Whitey serves as a rescue carrier for these vulnerable NPCs, helping move Tiffany during dangerous travel and carrying the paraplegic Meryl under Zhang Yang's protection. The connection is practical rather than an independently expressed bond. (Chapters 332 and 338)

Items

  • Leash of Gold-Eared Bear King: The binding item used to seal and summon Whitey. Its summon takes two seconds, only one battle mount may be present, and a defeated mount can be called again after ten minutes. The leash represents the bond mechanically but Whitey itself remains a living creature. (Chapter 220)
  • Icy Build skill book: A learned passive that reduces frost damage by ninety percent in Whitey's pet configuration. (Chapter 236)
  • Wild Recovery skill book: A learned active that exchanges Focus for percentage-based healing over ten seconds. (Chapter 236)
