Eyvinder

Eyvinder is a green-skinned, elf-like member of Malcolm’s entourage who audits the Art of the Wizard in Combat. His natural earth magic gives his teams powerful control of terrain, while an unusually large mana reserve creates a specific weakness near mana-draining vents.

Biography

Terrain and Entourages to The Rising

Eyvinder joins Malcolm in Baelin’s course and volunteers to help hold the class’s southern perimeter. Near a wild mana vent, he feels a painful pull because he possesses mana, forcing the group to plan around both his strength and his inability to remain close to the hazard. He still helps herd vent-drinkers from safer ground, demonstrating Baelin’s lesson that a mismatched ability can remain valuable when allies adjust positions rather than discarding the person who has it. (Chapters 57–61)

In later Barrens exercises, Eyvinder’s earth control becomes a decisive advantage. He emerges unscathed with Malcolm during the solo test, and in the underground rescue exercise he opens the rock itself, letting his group walk directly toward the teleportation circle instead of navigating trapped tunnels. Grimloch credits him for the easy route, showing how Eyvinder grows from a resource that must be protected from the terrain into the teammate who can reshape that terrain for everyone. (Chapters 76–117)

Reunions and the Refusal of Pettiness to Isolde's Shame

Eyvinder reunites with Malcolm, Rhea, Shiani, and the other former classmates at the Games of Roal. He joins their shared meal and reacts in chorus with the more cautious guests when Grimloch produces pumpkin ale, before participating in the celebration. The scene supplies no new magical feat, but confirms that his entourage role has broadened into friendships across the old class. (Chapters 403–404)

Prelude to the Second Grand Battle to Victory, Spoils and Celebrations

Eyvinder competes beside Malcolm and Rhea in the second grand battle, prioritising defence of their own flag and avoiding wasteful clashes with Alex’s exceptionally powerful team. Their opportunistic strategy earns second place by defeating forces already weakened by stronger opponents. Eyvinder’s smug satisfaction reflects a tactician who accepts unequal matchups and uses timing rather than pride; he remains alive within the wider postwar circle. (Chapters 602–605 and 905)

Appearance and personality

Eyvinder is tall, bald, pointed-eared, and green-skinned, resembling some elves Alex has seen in Generasi. He is cooperative and willing to volunteer for perimeter duty, but Baelin’s announcement of a solo Barrens test nearly prompts him to protest. Later scenes show dry caution around alcohol and visible satisfaction when a pragmatic competition strategy succeeds. (Chapters 57–58, 76, 404, and 605)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Eyvinder has natural earth magic that lets him control rock and soil. His clearest feat is opening solid rock to create a direct passage for an entire group, bypassing tunnels and their hazards. He can also use earth control while intercepting vent-drinkers and is treated as especially useful in underground terrain. The corpus does not name a spell tier or formal incantation for this ability. (Chapters 60, 80, 114, and 117)

His large natural mana reserve becomes a liability near wild mana vents, which painfully draw on mana and prevent him from approaching closely. Positioning and teammates can compensate for that limit, but they do not remove it. His earth magic is terrain-dependent in the demonstrated scenes; no evidence establishes equivalent control over metal, water, or other elements. (Chapters 58–61)
