Malcolm
Malcolm is a Generasi ice wizard whose early reliance on forceful spells develops into more flexible utility magic and team tactics.
Biography
Lessons and Gods to Memories, Recognition and Inheritance
Malcolm enters Baelin's combat course as one of three second-year battle-mages alongside Rhea and Shiani. Their first test produces the class's highest confirmed kills, but they spend so much mana attacking every threat directly that they nearly arrive helpless. Malcolm takes that criticism seriously. Over the break he learns Call Through Ice, a low-tier teleportation spell, specifically seeking options that are less “all or nothing,” and uses it to move a key past a trap. In the xyrthak battle, his ice attacks and teleportation contribute to a coordinated victory rather than an isolated display of force. (Chapters 45–143)
Malcolm remains closely tied to Rhea, Shiani, and his companion Eyvinder. He fights beside them, worries when Eyvinder takes underground risks, and joins the larger class in hunting the mana vampire after it wounds Thundar. His dry humour can sound detached, but his actions preserve the group relationships formed in Baelin's course. (Chapters 143–251)
The Ghosts of Faith and Gods to A Warm Prelude to Cold
After the class's major dangers, Malcolm's role becomes social evidence of a cohort that stays connected. He joins the Festival of Ghosts, offers blunt commentary when Alex's family humour gets out of hand, and attends the housewarming with Rhea and Shiani. Although he initially claims his presence is gift enough, he has in fact brought a sculpture made of never-melting ice, expressing friendship through the same magic that defines his studies. (Chapters 402–500)
Prelude to the Second Grand Battle to Victory, Spoils and Celebrations
Malcolm returns to the Games with Rhea, Eyvinder, and other former classmates. Their team avoids the reckless coalition trying to stop Alex, protects its own flag, and opportunistically defeats groups already weakened by stronger competitors. The strategy secures second place in the Grand Battle, and Malcolm mimes buying Alex's team a drink rather than resenting the gap between first and second. He later graduates, remains among the old combat-class circle, and attends Alex and Theresa's wedding. (Chapters 602–605 and 829–905)
Appearance and personality
The corpus identifies Malcolm as a young male wizard and ice specialist but gives few stable physical details beyond occasional stubble and his student context. His presentation is therefore defined more by his magic, tired or bored expressions, and proximity to Rhea, Shiani, and Eyvinder than by a distinctive costume. (Chapters 45–143 and 402–500)
Malcolm is dry, blunt, observant, and more caring than his glum delivery suggests. He teases friends, offers unhelpfully practical advice as a joke, and sometimes appears half-asleep, yet he worries about Eyvinder, learns from Baelin's criticism, and adopts tactics that protect rather than exhaust his team. (Chapters 45–143 and 402–605)
Magic, abilities, and skills
Ice spellcraft
Malcolm specialises in cold magic. He conjures multiple ice bolts, projects lines of freezing power, and plans to ice the broad wings of a flying xyrthak. Fast targets can evade or be only clipped by these attacks, and covering a large moving surface takes time, making allied restraint and distraction important to his effectiveness. (Chapters 134–143)
Call Through Ice
Call Through Ice freezes two points in space and opens a teleportation doorway through the para-elemental plane of cold. Malcolm learns it over a school break and first uses it to retrieve a key without crossing a blade trap. He later uses the same utility principle in the xyrthak battle, where Baelin credits his teleportation with helping overcome the monster's speed. The spell is relatively low-tier for teleportation but difficult for non-ice specialists. (Chapters 117–138)
Battle teamwork and resource management
Malcolm begins with enough offensive training to help his group kill more threats than any other team, but that success nearly empties their mana pools. He develops by conserving resources, combining ice with earth, fire, smoke, and mobility, and choosing opportunistic tournament engagements. This growth improves judgment rather than establishing a formal new spell tier. (Chapters 45–143 and 602–605)
