Shiani

Shiani is a Generasi battle-magic student whose reverence for fire is matched by unusual gentleness. She becomes an important friend to Selina Roth by explaining that flame can protect, nourish, and renew as well as destroy.

Biography

Lessons and Gods to Memories, Recognition and Inheritance

Shiani begins Baelin’s combat course as an experienced second-year fire mage, but her group’s direct approach nearly empties their mana before the trial ends. She accepts the lesson that power without conservation creates helplessness and later proposes compromises when classmates argue over tactics. When Alex asks for help with Selina’s fear of fire, Shiani listens to his family history and speaks gently with the child about fire’s uses and her people’s worship, giving Selina a language for considering her affinity without pressure. Ancient Rituals and New Applications to To the Beach of Before

Shiani’s explanation continues influencing Selina as the girl experiments with seeing fire as directed energy rather than malice. Shiani remains part of the old combat-course circle, honouring the dead at the Festival, sustaining friendships with Rhea and Malcolm, and helping preserve the group’s ties through visits and celebrations. Her actions in this phase are primarily social and instructional: she offers reassurance, corrects discourteous friends, and keeps her magic associated with care as well as battle. The Final Meeting of COMB-1000 to The Circle

At the last COMB-1000 gathering, Shiani arrives with family and warmly reconnects with Selina and her former classmates. She plans to become an adventurer after graduation, drawn by rumours of a magical demigod’s tomb, and recognises in Selina’s dress a journey through fire without being consumed by it. Shiani graduates with distinction, then remains part of Alex and Theresa’s close community at their wedding. (Chapters 829–831 and 905)

Appearance and personality

Shiani is a young human woman with dark hair who wears an elaborate necklace of pearls and seashells. She is gentle, cooperative, devout toward the fire tradition of her people, and quick to worry that poorly chosen words might hurt someone. In battle instruction she can be direct and competitive, but remorse at accidental deaths and her care for Selina show that she does not equate fire magic with cruelty. (Chapters 45–102 and 112–168)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Shiani casts combat fire magic, including fireballs and wider flame effects. These spells provide destructive force at range, but her first Baelin exercise demonstrates the central limit: repeated powerful casting can exhaust her mana and leave her unable to answer later threats. She learns to pair magic with tactics, allies, weapon skills, restraint, and less costly options instead of meeting every problem with maximum flame. (Chapters 45–102 and 199–251)

Her understanding of fire is also practical and religious. She explains controlled flame as a tool for warmth, cooking, protection, fighting monsters, and renewing burned land; the fire itself has no mind and becomes harmful when allowed to run free.
