Rhea

Rhea is an elven fire mage in Baelin’s combat course. Her early confidence in direct battle magic is tempered by lessons about mana conservation, cooperation, and the dangers of relying on destructive spells alone.

Biography

Lessons and Gods to Memories, Recognition and Inheritance

Rhea begins as one of three experienced second-year battle mages who overcome threats directly but reach the end of Baelin’s trial nearly out of mana. She accepts his criticism that a wizard who spends every resource early becomes helpless later, then argues for cooperation when Minervus treats a shared exercise as competition. In the underground trial she survives the haunt’s deceptions with her classmates, reinforcing the value of allies and reserve strength over simple confirmed kills. (Chapters 45–117 and 124–251)

Friendships after combat training

Rhea returns to the old combat-class circle at the Festival of Ghosts, approaching with Shiani, Malcolm, and Eyvinder to honour the dead and reconnect with friends. Her teasing challenge to Malcolm over competing with a child shows the group’s familiar dynamic, but the gathering also marks a development from classmates forced into cooperation to friends who deliberately maintain connection after danger and separate studies pull them apart. (Chapters 402–404)

She later attends Alex and Theresa’s housewarming with Malcolm and Shiani, helping reunite much of COMB-1000 in a peaceful home rather than a battlefield. These social appearances establish no new spell or formal advancement; they confirm that Rhea continues choosing the relationships Baelin once told the class to cultivate and remains alive within that circle through graduation and the postwar wedding. (Chapter 500; Chapters 829–905)

Appearance and personality

Rhea is a towering female elf with pointed ears and the bearing of an experienced battle-magic student. She is confident, direct, sociable, and willing to challenge unfair or self-defeating behaviour. Remorse when creatures die accidentally and her continued closeness with Shiani and Malcolm temper her combativeness with empathy and loyalty. (Chapters 45–117, 402–404, and 829)

Magic, abilities, and skills

Rhea specialises in fire magic and uses fireballs and other ranged flame attacks. These spells can destroy threats quickly and contribute to the highest kill count in an early trial, but repeated casting drains her mana. Baelin’s assessment establishes the limitation directly: without conservation, weapons, evasion, or lower-cost tactics, even a successful battle mage can arrive at the final danger unable to respond. (Chapters 45–80 and 112–117)

She also has formal battle-magic training and some weapon instruction, although the corpus does not isolate a named signature technique beyond her fire spells. Her later evidence is primarily social, so no higher tier or new mechanism can be confirmed. Her latest demonstrated identity remains an experienced fire mage alive in the postwar community. (Chapters 45–117 and 829–905)

  • Alex Roth: Fellow combat-course student and later friend whose home and wedding reunite the old class.
