Mikhail Aubert is a former Great Power imprisoned in Index after murdering another Great Power. Mana-core castration is intended to leave him powerless, but his stigmata Carna's Blessing lets him preserve part of his internal mana network and rebuild a core during twenty years of confinement. Vanitas Astrea temporarily frees him in exchange for information about the Archives of Haven, only for Mikhail to betray him, clash with Soliette Dominique, and choose magical self-destruction over renewed captivity. Role in the Supplied Story

Mikhail enters the supplied story as Index's most dangerous prisoner, a fifty-four-year-old former Great Power serving life after murdering a peer. The authorities preserve him for his knowledge rather than execute him and destroy his mana core and veins, believing spellcasting permanently impossible. Vanitas visits seeking the Archives of Haven and offers escape before learning whether Mikhail's claimed information is real. During a mana storm, Vanitas engineers a mass breakout and passes Mikhail a fragment cut from the Blade of Resonance, which lets the prisoner sever his cell's circuits and move through the resulting confusion. Mikhail accepts the bargain but immediately pressures Vanitas over the guard deaths his plan causes, recognizing that survival has already made the professor complicit in violence. (Chapters 44–48)

Near the exit, Mikhail reveals that he can still cast, swats away Vanitas's Windblades, and attacks rather than honor the exchange. His restored Umbra and Aqua pathways produce a shadow-water tide, spears, and ice that sever Vanitas's arm, though the professor's altered lightning spell wounds and delays him until Soliette and Alaric arrive. Appearance and personality

Mikhail is fifty-four during his imprisonment and has red eyes that glow faintly in Index's dim chamber. The corpus does not provide a stable hair color, build, or pre-imprisonment attire. His later battle progressively destroys his body: high-level casting ruptures his arms, Soliette's counter leaves one arm gone and the other unusable, and his final spell collapses his body into a black scorch mark without recoverable remains. Imprisonment leaves Mikhail volatile, profane, provocative, and hungry for even a trace of his former respect. He frames destructive choices as balance and insists that actions have reasons, yet readily breaks his bargain once freedom seems near. Magic and abilities

Before his capture, Mikhail's discovered essences are Pyro, Aqua, Gaia, and Zephyr at Grandmaster, plus Umbra at Sovereign. Carna's Blessing is an innate stigmata that lets Mikhail manipulate his organs, veins, and other internal bodily structures at extremely fine precision. Before mana-core castration, he secretly shifts critical mana veins away from the areas the procedure will rupture. Most pathways are still destroyed, but he preserves two routes associated with Umbra and Aqua. Over twenty years, those surviving veins let him breathe in ambient mana, refine it into essence, and rebuild a functional core because the core is a reservoir formed by circulation rather than the original source of mana. The survival method is partial and hazardous, not regeneration without limit. Moving the veins incorrectly would have ruptured Mikhail's internal system and killed him, damaged essences do not return, and the rebuilt core remains unusable while prison shackles suppress it. Carna's Blessing does not prevent battle damage: Vanitas makes him bleed, high-level unmediated spells tear apart his arms, and Soliette's force leaves him physically helpless. Umbra and Aqua spellcasting

With the shackles removed, Mikhail combines retained darkness and water-related magic. Shadow Tide manifests as a torrent of black water that throws Vanitas into a wall; other Umbra casts crack shadows into spear-like webs, form tendrils, or create Shadow Phantasm. Glacial Rend produces rotating ice spears in a broad supernova-like burst, severing Vanitas's arm. He can also detect the demonic odor around Vanitas at close range, though the text does not identify whether that perception comes from Umbra attunement, experience, or another sense. Mikhail's Master-ranked spells remain far above an average mage's even without a medium, while Grandmaster casting is possible at severe risk.
