Alaric Eltrine

Alaric Eltrine is the thirty-seven-year-old warden of Index, Aetherion's high-security prison. A sharp investigator and Grandmaster swordsman, he manages catastrophic breaches by placing the lives of his guards above the preference to capture offenders alive. His cooperation with Vanitas Astrea during the prison crisis develops into a grounded friendship in which Alaric recognizes both Vanitas's contribution to saving Index and the guilt he conceals afterward. (Chapters 44–49, 59, and 114)

Biography

Role in the Supplied Story

Alaric receives Vanitas at Index during the Desmond Wyndale investigation, questions whether the professor understands why he was targeted, and grants supervised access to prisoners while remaining alert to provocation and security rules. When Edmund Velgrind initiates a breach, Alaric first tries to send the civilian professor away, then accepts his help on the condition that Vanitas follow orders. He prioritizes the west wing because Edmund's necromancy keeps reanimating threats, regroups guards under chaotic spellfire, and personally kills Edmund when unconventional magic makes capture too dangerous. Although badly wounded, he continues directing the cleanup and credits Vanitas's counterattack with saving guards who otherwise would have died. (Chapters 44–47)

The escape of former Great Power Mikhail Aubert forces another confrontation before Index can recover. Alaric recognizes that a man with a shattered mana core should not be casting and stands beside Soliette Dominique, trying to shield her before realizing how completely she outclasses the threat. He nevertheless remains tactically useful, pulling Soliette away when Mikhail begins a self-destructive shadow collapse. The prison survives, but many guards die, and Alaric presides over their memorial rather than treating them as anonymous losses. His later statement that Vanitas is the reason Index still stands turns professional gratitude into part of the institution's account of the crisis. (Chapters 47–49, 59, and 114)

After the funeral, Alaric invites Vanitas to drink and listens as he disguises a deeply personal story as something that happened to a “friend.” When Vanitas passes out, Alaric carries him through the rain, recognizes the self-blame beneath the story, and tells him that not every burden is his fault. This private act develops their relationship beyond battlefield cooperation without claiming knowledge Vanitas never explicitly gives him. The corpus does not show Alaric after his later visit to Silver University, so his latest confirmed state is alive and still serving as Index's warden. (Chapters 59 and 114)

Appearance and personality

Alaric is thirty-seven. He wears armor while operating as warden and is repeatedly shown with a sword; during the breach, the armor becomes cracked and bloodied, and afterward his already wounded body is wrapped in fresh bandages. The corpus supplies no stable hair color, eye color, height, or fuller ordinary-clothing description. (Chapters 44–49)

He is perceptive, pragmatic, protective of subordinates, and capable of warmth outside formal duty. Alaric questions inconsistencies, warns visitors without belittling the danger, and abandons his preference for interrogation when delay would cost lives. He can grin, swear, and tease Vanitas, but does not trivialize fallen guards or expose a vulnerable friend for amusement. His instinct to shield Soliette despite her superior power also shows that responsibility has become habitual, sometimes outrunning his assessment of who actually needs protection. (Chapters 44–49, 59, and 114)

Magic and abilities

Alaric is a Crusader with the Phantom stigmata. Vanitas's spectacles identify his sword art Astral Rend at Grandmaster level and Void Requiem at Intermediate level. The corpus does not explain Phantom's mechanics or explicitly connect either named sword art to a specific supernatural effect in the observed battles, so their names and attainment should not be treated as a complete ability description. (Chapter 44)

Swordsmanship and command

Alaric moves fast enough to blur, keeps a powerful former Crusader on the defensive, and cuts through inmates, monsters, and undead so rapidly that Vanitas cannot track every motion. Even while wounded, he closes on Edmund through mixed spellfire and kills him before another spell can be completed. His combat effectiveness is paired with command discipline: he activates lockdown priorities, orders guards to regroup and hold lines, secures breached sectors, and changes from capture to lethal force when necromancy makes delay untenable. These applications support elite close-quarters skill and crisis leadership, not immunity to magic or inexhaustible endurance. (Chapters 45–47)

Phantom stigmata and limits

The source identifies Phantom by name but never shows a labeled activation, visual phenomenon, range, cost, or interaction from which its function can be distinguished from Alaric's trained speed and sword arts. His supported limitations are therefore physical and situational: repeated combat leaves him heavily wounded and bandaged, he cannot personally prevent Mikhail's escape, and he is startled when Soliette dismantles magic far beyond his experience. He can block attacks and pull an ally out of a collapsing spell's radius, but the corpus does not establish resistance to Sovereign magic or the ability to defeat a former Great Power alone. His latest state remains alive. (Chapters 44–49 and 114)

Relationships

  • Vanitas Astrea: Alaric initially supervises Vanitas as an investigative visitor, then accepts his help during the breach and credits him with saving guards and Index itself. Their later drinks allow Alaric to offer quiet support without forcing Vanitas to confess more than he can. (Chapters 44–49, 59, and 114)
  • Soliette Dominique: Alaric stands beside Soliette against Mikhail, reflexively tries to shield her, and then pulls her away from Mikhail's suicidal shadow collapse. He recognizes her power but remains committed to practical support. (Chapter 49)
  • Mikhail Aubert: Mikhail escapes Alaric's prison during the wider breach. Alaric confronts him with Soliette, questions how his shattered core permits magic, and helps survive his final attempt to escape through self-destruction. (Chapters 45 and 48–49)
