Pride Armor

Pride Armor was a self-moving set of silver-white armor with Dawn Paladin abilities and a treacherous standard of strength. It protected or fought for a sufficiently strong user, but attacked weakness, backstabbers, and certain hated pathways. Its most reliable use was therefore not to wear it at all, but to place its back toward an enemy and let its curse choose the target.

History

Gardner Martin's armor and spoils of war

Gardner Martin wore Pride Armor while escaping Fourth Epoch Trier. It absorbed most incoming damage and created a Sword of Dawn and Hurricane of Light, but Gardner knew that visible injury could make it betray and kill him. He manipulated Olson into attacking first, thereby directing the armor's “traitor” judgment against Olson; after Gardner's eventual defeat, Lumian's team took the armor as spoils. (Chapters 1912–1914 and 1927)

Lumian Lee retained it as communal equipment despite an offer from the Purifiers. He judged it dangerous but strong enough to threaten any non-demigod opponent. Against Lato Guiaro, Lumian placed the empty armor with its back to the target, causing it to animate and attack on its own. When Lumian became spiritually exhausted, it turned on him; restoring his strength immediately redirected it to Lato. This demonstrated that the curse continuously reassessed nearby weakness rather than permanently recognizing a master. (Chapters 1935 and 2016–2017)

Weaponized curses and return from exile

The team learned that Pride Armor strongly hated Earth- and Evernight-pathway items or beings, as well as anyone attacking from behind. Lumian used these biases as detection and targeting tools, while teaching his companions the central safety rule: do not wear it; position an enemy behind it. The armor could escalate to an indiscriminate Hurricane of Light if it could not identify a backstabber. (Chapters 2040–2043, 2079, and 2143)

Franca Roland deployed it against Overseer Perle in a sealed mirror world. The armor's god-touched hatred let it harm the otherwise attack-immune Overseer and temporarily collapse her Punishers. Perle exiled it into a void crack, but it inexplicably returned to Franca's Traveler's Bag. The text does not identify who or what enabled that return. (Chapters 2162–2167)

Sale in the dream city

Because Lumian's later condition made the armor prioritize him, Jenna eventually offered it to the Star Dream Provisions Store. It tried to scuttle toward the exit, then stopped, and the shopkeeper bought it for 30,000. It was later visible on a shelf, stained with dark-red blood and radiating an illness-like weakening effect it had not previously displayed. The cause and permanence of this alteration are not explained. (Chapters 2384 and 2423)

Abilities and properties

• As armor, it absorbed most physical and mystical damage, though a sufficiently strong hit could crack a local section and suspend protection there. It enhanced combat with a radiant Sword of Dawn and a rapidly reusable Hurricane of Light. (Chapters 1913–1914)
• It could animate without a wearer, charge with great speed, form its light broadsword, and fight with limited practical intelligence. This let a holder deploy it as an autonomous Warrior rather than risk wearing it. (Chapters 2016–2017 and 2162–2163)
• Its betrayal curse attacked a wearer or nearby person judged weakened. Restoring strength could reverse that choice. An attack from behind also provoked it, and failure to locate the attacker could prompt a wide-area Hurricane of Light. (Chapters 1913, 2017, and 2041–2043)
• It showed special hatred toward Earth and Evernight influences and could permanently prioritize an Omebella-related target. Its ability to wound Overseer Perle may likewise have come from divine hatred or corruption, but Lumian explicitly treated that explanation as a hypothesis. (Chapters 2040, 2163, and 2180)
