Gardner Martin

Gardner Martin is the public businessman who commands the Savoie Mob and the covert Iron and Blood Cross Order officer who draws Lumian Lee into its Trier operation. He acts as Lumian's patron, employer, examiner, and eventual enemy, financing the young Hunter's advancement while quietly preparing to use him in the Hostel ritual that opens a route into Fourth Epoch Trier. His polished sponsorship and long conspiracy make him one of Lumian's clearest demonstrations of how a Red Priest pathway Beyonder can turn apparently truthful motives into instruments of a larger plan.

Biography

Savoie Patron and Iron-and-Blood Cross

Gardner first receives Lumian at his villa on Rue des Fontaines after the newcomer has killed two Sequence 8 Beyonders and badly injured another. He immediately recognizes the value of a young Provoker with nerve and judgment: he buys the Pugilist characteristic taken from “Hammer” Ait for 18,000 verl d'or, explicitly paying a premium as a reward, and orders Baron Brignais to hand Lumian control of Salle de Bal Brise. The promotion both rewards achievement and tests whether Lumian can manage people, money, and conflict rather than merely win fights. Gardner promises larger ventures if he performs well, establishing a patronage relationship in which advancement is tied to usefulness. (Chapter 1606)

The amiable mob boss is also a substantial businessman. He attends political functions as a shareholder of Rist Docks and head of Rist Shipping Company and Savoie Construction Company, not merely as a criminal leader. When Lumian candidly admits taking a 12,000-verl-d'or advance to become a Pyromaniac, Gardner responds by finding the supplementary ingredients, later converting the advance into a formal reward, and advising him not to drink the potion in poor condition. This generosity is calculated but real: it gives Gardner a stronger subordinate, places much of Lumian's progress under his sponsorship, and teaches the young man that candor can be more persuasive than exaggerated declarations of loyalty. (Chapters 1665–1666 and 1717)

Behind those businesses, Gardner is a Commanding Officer of the Iron and Blood Cross Order. He explains that the Order seeks to overthrow the government and build a state ruled by Beyonders, while his own companies and mob give it leverage over dockworkers, construction workers, porters, and laborers. The Savoie Mob raises money, gathers information, and can push workers into barricades or riots; supporting the corrupt parliamentarian Hugues Artois is presented as a way to make conditions so bad that citizens turn toward the Order. Gardner also makes Fourth Epoch Trier a central objective, describing the buried capital and the remains of Blood Emperor Alista Tudor as a treasure for Hunters. (Chapters 1716–1717)

That revolutionary account contains enough truth to be convincing while concealing the immediate operation. Gardner had long cooperated with General Philip, whose Carbonari and heretical contacts helped create the disorder needed by the Hostel ritual. Hugues Artois was not merely an opportunistic pawn whom Gardner tolerated; he belonged to a coordinated network that funded cultists, stirred riots, and prepared access to the sealed city. Gardner's mob, docks, dance hall, political support, and underground smuggling therefore served both his public influence and a specific ritual plan. The Order ultimately intended to open the seal, hunt the out-of-control Conqueror Vermonda Sauron, and claim the Sequence 1 characteristic. (Chapters 1907 and 1926)

Testing Ciel

Lumian approaches Gardner under instructions from Mr. K and with the Tarot Club's knowledge, but Gardner is conducting his own evaluation. He sends Lumian, “Rat” Christo, and “Giant” Simon to the Albert Mines to receive a sealed suitcase without speaking to its carrier or opening it. The grotesque carrier and headless pursuer are a performance by Supervisor Olson, designed to test obedience, courage, composure, and leadership. Gardner scarcely inspects the suitcase afterward; instead, he and Olson discuss how Lumian united frightened subordinates into a functioning team. Olson's assurance that disloyalty could later be made into loyalty reveals that the test is recruitment into a corrupting system, not a neutral assessment. (Chapters 1702–1707)

Satisfied with the result, Gardner personally invites Lumian into his “circle” and orders him to keep vigil overnight at the burned ruin at 13 Avenue du Marché. He values suspicion and thought as much as courage, telling Lumian that an immediate, unthinking acceptance would have disappointed him. The site exposes candidates to a dangerous influence from Fourth Epoch Trier; Lumian survives without the expected corruption because of the extraordinary seal and Angel within him. Gardner then presides over the Order's military-style initiation, welcomes Lumian by his real name, grants him the 12,000-verl-d'or reward, and teaches him a guarded version of the acting method through the Pyromaniac maxim that fire can burn its wielder as well as its target. (Chapters 1711–1718)

Gardner's sponsorship thus gives Lumian money, position, pathway resources, occult instruction, and access to the Order, but it also places him under surveillance. The Albert Mines assignment lets Olson observe him; the vigil tests his response to corruption; and later missions keep him near Salle de Bal Brise and the underground leakage point. Gardner knows that an Angel is sealed inside Lumian and suspects that other forces support him, yet continues offering chances for “loyalty” because Lumian is useful enough to be watched and shaped rather than discarded. Lumian's apparent rise within the Order is consequently also Gardner's effort to keep a ritual catalyst within reach. (Chapters 1706, 1718, and 1907)

After the Tree of Shadow disaster, that hidden purpose becomes decisive. Gardner's investigation of the Bliss Society and his connection to General Philip give him information about Lumian's sealed condition. Lumian later concludes that Gardner had already committed to the Hostel plan and was guiding him toward the position from which either Gardner or an Order demigod could send him into the painting world and activate the ritual. Gardner's earlier favors were not false, but they were subordinate to this objective: he would gladly cultivate a gifted Hunter, yet he would also sacrifice that subordinate once his sealed Angel and unusual convergence became more valuable than his service. (Chapter 1907)

Exposure and Defeat

When the Hostel ritual is prematurely activated, Gardner abandons concealment. Wearing the silver-white Pride Armor, he deploys the Iron and Blood Cross Order's local strength, sends members to ignite violence at the docks and elsewhere, and enters the opened route with Olson under the protection of the Order's president and vice president. In Fourth Epoch Trier he acknowledges General Philip as his collaborator and dismisses Lumian's fate: despite having given the young Hunter many chances, he now intends to let him die naturally in the sealed city. The statement ends the patron relationship and confirms that Gardner's standard for loyalty ultimately means submission to his plan. (Chapters 1903–1907)

Franca Roland and Anthony Reid emerge near Gardner and Philip, forcing the conspiracy into open combat. Gardner immediately blankets their former position in blazing-white fireballs, keeps moving so Franca cannot hold his reflection long enough to curse him, and uses Pride Armor's Sunrise Gleam to dispel shadows and expose her invisibility. Franca nevertheless exploits their past intimacy through supernatural desire, while Anthony and Lumian focus on Philip. Gardner survives repeated shots because the armor absorbs the impacts, releases a Hurricane of Light to cover his retreat, and transforms into a blazing-white spear to escape toward the city. His knowledge of Franca's pathway makes him a dangerous counter to his former lover, but her understanding of him gives the opposing team an equally personal opening. (Chapters 1908–1911)

Gardner's apparent victory becomes a sequence of betrayals. Olson is revealed as a long-dead body controlled by another head that intends to replace Gardner, and attacks him when his condition weakens. Gardner survives, heals, and enters the ruins, still believing that the will within Fourth Epoch Trier favors him and that its corruption gives him limited special access. Instead, when the city's state changes under intense sunlight, his own head tears away from his armored body. The “special” corruption he believed controllable proves to have made him subject to the same head-and-body separation that destroyed Olson. (Chapters 1912–1915 and 1923)

Franca, Lumian, Jenna, and Anthony encounter Gardner's severed head fighting his headless, armor-clad body. Franca reflects the head and ignites his spirituality with black flames, telling him that she will liberate him; the headless body cleaves his skull with a radiant axe, and Lumian's fireball destroys the exposed brain. The still-hostile body is then stopped through Psychic Piercing, a curse, Frenzy, and fire detonated inside the unprotected neck. Madam Magician removes the remains and corruption, and Lumian receives the Sequence 5 Reaper characteristic. She later explains that Red Angel Medici had manipulated Gardner and the Iron and Blood Cross Order so that the Hostel opening would deliver Vermonda Sauron's characteristic to Medici instead. Gardner dies not as the master Conspirer he imagined himself to be, but as a middle layer in an older and greater conspiracy. (Chapters 1925–1927)

Appearance and personality

Gardner is nearly 1.8 meters tall and appears to be in his early forties. He has black hair with silver strands at the temples, strong and sharply defined facial features, unusually full cheeks, and brown irises tinged with red. His largely unwrinkled face and ready smile give him the air of an approachable businessman. He normally dresses in formal shirts, dark suits, tailcoats, and hats, and is also seen with a diamond ring and mahogany pipe. (Chapters 1606, 1665, and 1702)

His friendliness is a deliberate leadership style rather than simple warmth. Gardner praises frankly, pays generously when an investment serves him, listens for what a subordinate really wants, and prefers intelligent, aggressive followers to automatons. He can be fair within the Order's internal rules and gives practical warnings about potions and mystical items. At the same time, he treats workers as political bargaining chips, allies as instruments, and loyalty as something that can be imposed through corruption. His defining temperament is therefore controlled calculation: he is capable of genuine approval and patronage without allowing affection or obligation to displace the conspiracy. (Chapters 1666, 1706, 1712, and 1716–1717)

Gardner is proud of being exceptional. He believes he can approach dangerous power that transformed others into monsters while remaining merely “slightly” corrupted, and Pride Armor amplifies his arrogance. That confidence helps him act decisively under pressure, but it also blinds him to the scale of the forces manipulating him and to the literal betrayal built into his equipment. Even when wounded and hunted by another version of himself, he analyzes the opponent's feint and pushes deeper into Fourth Epoch Trier rather than retreating. (Chapters 1909, 1915, 1923, and 1927)

Pathways and abilities

Gardner advances through the potion-based Red Priest pathway rather than receiving a boon from an outer deity. The corpus identifies him as a Sequence 5 Reaper, meaning his abilities include the foundations of Hunter, Provoker, Pyromaniac, and Conspirer as well as Reaper's qualitative strengthening. His retrieved remains form a Reaper Beyonder characteristic, confirming that these powers came from conventional characteristics even though he was also corrupted by Fourth Epoch Trier. (Chapters 1907, 1926–1927, and 1933)

Hunter senses, leadership, and provocation

The pathway gives Gardner enhanced physical condition, perception, environmental awareness, and the instincts of a hunter. He notices Lumian observing him from shadow, evaluates posture and hesitation during assignments, and understands how Demoness concealment removes footprints, scent, and spiritual aura that a Hunter would ordinarily gather. These senses are powerful but not absolute: Franca's complete invisibility defeats his attempts to locate her until Pride Armor supplies an area-wide counter. (Chapters 1665, 1703, and 1908–1909)

Provocation and command are integrated into his social methods. Gardner tests ambition, rewards competitive subordinates, and uses military ritual and shared slogans to bind Order members emotionally. His speech about taking his position invites Lumian to imagine rapid advancement, while his carefully incomplete truths encourage the listener to reach the conclusion Gardner wants. The approach works best when he controls information and setting; it fails once Lumian can compare Gardner's claims with the ritual's exposed structure and General Philip's presence. (Chapters 1711–1717 and 1907)

Pyromaniac and Reaper flames

Gardner can create and precisely direct intense fire. In battle he manifests dozens or hundreds of blazing-white fireballs around himself and detonates them over an area, uses explosions to search for an invisible target, and converts his body into a blazing-white flaming spear that crosses more than a hundred meters in moments. He also shifts away from an explosion through flame-based movement. Reaper is a qualitative change for the pathway: the white heat, scale, control, and speed shown by Gardner substantially exceed a low-Sequence Pyromaniac's ordinary crimson fire. (Chapters 1908, 1911, and 1915)

His fire supports pursuit, escape, saturation attacks, and close combat rather than solving every mystical problem. Franca's concealment leaves him firing without a confirmed target, mirror substitutions absorb otherwise lethal attacks, and emotional or mental interference can interrupt his timing. His transformation into a flaming spear creates superb distance but does not prevent the angelic roar from injuring him or the city's corruption from separating his head. Reaper also improves resistance to heat and flame, but Pride Armor—not the pathway alone—absorbs the bullets and physical impacts that would otherwise kill him. (Chapters 1909–1912 and 1923)

Conspirer planning and Reaper lethality

As a Conspirer, Gardner builds plans from organizations, information gaps, and competing motives rather than relying only on personal combat. He makes the Savoie Mob, commercial companies, Hugues Artois's administration, Carbonari agitation, cult networks, underground routes, and Lumian's sealed Angel converge on a single ritual objective. His explanation of the Order's revolution is effective because most of it describes real policy; the false conclusion hides inside true operational details. This is his strongest demonstrated application of the pathway and the reason Lumian reinterprets the Sequence name through him. (Chapters 1716–1717 and 1907)

Reaper adds heightened flame control, physical resilience, and the pathway's capacity to investigate and exploit weaknesses for lethal attacks. Gardner's own final battles emphasize saturation fire and tactical counters more than a separately named Weakness Investigation strike, so the corpus does not establish which blows use that technique. His practical lethality instead appears in how quickly he changes from area fire to anti-invisibility light, escape, or pursuit. Mental effects, Demoness curses, the betrayal of his Sealed Artifact, and high-level corruption all bypass the straightforward physical advantages on which that lethality depends. (Chapters 1908–1911 and 1925)

Fourth Epoch Trier corruption

The vigil site at 13 Avenue du Marché connects Gardner to a will and abnormal power in Fourth Epoch Trier. He believes this corruption marks him as favored and lets him invoke a limited portion of the sealed city's power without suffering Olson's complete transformation. The belief is only partly reliable: other characters recognize that he has acquired “peculiarities,” but the mechanism and exact powers are not catalogued, and Gardner fails when he tries to call for aid during his final fight. (Chapters 1718, 1909, 1923, and 1925)

Its clearest effect is also its fatal limitation. Under the changed conditions of Fourth Epoch Trier, Gardner's head and spine detach from his body, leaving both parts capable of hostile action. Rather than granting safe privileged access, the corruption binds him to the city's rules and to the same grotesque pattern he had used Olson to imitate during Lumian's recruitment test. The appropriate counter is not merely stronger fire: separation, mental attacks, spiritual curses, and direct destruction of the unarmored head and neck defeat him. (Chapters 1706, 1923, and 1925)

Pride Armor

Pride Armor, Sealed Artifact 2-247, grants Gardner the powers of a Sequence 6 Dawn Paladin. It increases size, strength, defense, and combat skill; creates a 48-meter Sunrise Gleam that dispels illusions, erases shadows, suppresses invisibility, and weakens incorporeal creatures; and manifests a purifying broadsword that can be dismantled into a devastating Hurricane of Light. Its armor regenerates damage over periods ranging from roughly half an hour to a day, enabling Gardner to survive shots and explosions that break the breastplate. (Chapter 1909)

The armor is indiscriminately dangerous. It attacks people it judges physically weak, may target anyone standing behind it, reacts badly to other mystical items, increases the wearer's arrogance, and can attack its wearer when weakened. Most importantly, every wearer eventually suffers betrayal even after removing it; the curse derives from a deity's hatred and cannot be fully avoided even by Angels. Gardner obtained the artifact after killing two Purifiers, and it later turns his own headless body against his severed head. The armor compensates for weaknesses in a Hunter's mystical defenses, but its curse makes prolonged reliance a delayed self-defeat. (Chapters 1909, 1925, and 1927)

Relationships

  • Lumian Lee: Gardner promotes, finances, instructs, tests, and recruits Lumian, seeing both an exceptional Hunter and a useful ritual catalyst. Their patron-subordinate bond becomes open hostility when Gardner chooses the Hostel plan over the life of the young man he cultivated.
  • Franca Roland: Franca is Gardner's lover while secretly investigating him for the Demoness Sect. Their intimacy gives each detailed knowledge of the other's habits and pathway, and she ultimately destroys his severed head while framing the act as liberation.
  • Anthony Reid: Anthony's investigation of General Philip helps expose Gardner's conspiracy. Gardner initially treats him as an auxiliary target, but Anthony's mental powers contribute to defeating both Philip's network and Gardner's headless body.
  • Jenna: Jenna enters Fourth Epoch Trier with Lumian and helps curse and destroy Gardner's remaining body.
  • Baron Brignais: Gardner delegates major Savoie businesses through Brignais and overrides his objections when transferring Salle de Bal Brise to Lumian.
  • General Philip: Philip is Gardner's principal external collaborator in the Hostel plan, connecting the Order's underground ambitions with the Carbonari, cult networks, and the mirrored Primordial Demoness figurine.
  • Supervisor Olson: Olson helps Gardner test recruits, but the being using Olson's corpse later attempts to replace him. Their partnership foreshadows the corruption and betrayal that destroy Gardner.
  • Hugues Artois: Gardner knowingly supports Artois's political rise so that misrule and public anger can serve the Order and, ultimately, the Hostel ritual.

Items

  • Pride Armor (2-247): A stolen Dawn Paladin Sealed Artifact that supplies Gardner's armor, Sunrise Gleam, radiant weapons, and Hurricane of Light. Its inescapable betrayal curse contributes directly to his defeat and leaves it as spoils for Lumian's team. (Chapters 1912–1914 and 1927)
  • Healing agent: A Nightstalker-made green liquid obtained through General Philip; Gardner uses it to close the severe wound in his chest before entering Fourth Epoch Trier.
