Leonard Mitchell
Leonard Mitchell is a Tingen Nighthawk, later Red Glove and high-ranking deacon of the Church of Evernight, and the Tarot Club member represented by The Star. A Sequence 1 Marauder angel, Pallez Zoroast, secretly lives within him and becomes his adviser and companion. Leonard’s failure to save his Tingen teammates turns his casual confidence into a long pursuit of Ince Zangwill and, ultimately, a sustained commitment to protecting others as a Servant of Concealment.
Biography
Tingen and the Voice Within
Leonard joins the Tingen Nighthawks as a Sleepless and advances to Midnight Poet, presenting himself as a leisurely, slightly vain young man with the air of someone who expects to be a story’s protagonist. Behind that pose, he carries a hidden voice that supplies occult knowledge and makes him unusually alert to other people who do not fit ordinary fate. He notices that Klein survived an impossible incident, calls his disposition special, and repeatedly probes whether Klein recognizes that they are both unusual without revealing the being inside him. (Chapters 17, 21, 42–44, and 88)
In field work, Leonard combines close combat, shooting, climbing, spiritual perception, and supernatural chanting. His songs put kidnappers to sleep or calm spirits, while his casual humor helps disguise the seriousness with which he monitors Klein and the voice. He values the easy camaraderie of Blackthorn Security Company and relies on Captain Dunn Smith, but that comfort also encourages him to postpone rigorous advancement; he uses the acting method only superficially until the dangers around Tingen prove that unusual assistance cannot substitute for personal strength. (Chapters 42–44, 73, 88, and 124)
When Megose arrives carrying the True Creator’s spawn, Leonard helps evacuate the office and joins the defense, but his low Sequence leaves him unable to remain conscious through the decisive battle. He wakes to Dunn and Klein’s deaths and must face their families without having prevented either loss. The catastrophe destroys his romantic sense that being “special” makes him the protagonist and replaces it with guilt: he had cherished a life without responsibility, and now believes that greater effort might have let him stand beside his teammates when it mattered. (Chapters 205–212 and 944)
Leonard advances to Nightmare, transfers into the Red Gloves, and commits himself to hunting Ince Zangwill. When he learns that the inner voice is literally a Parasite, he angrily questions whether it is consuming his life or cultivating him as a potion. Pallez explains that their pathways are incompatible, that he needs a host while recovering from Amon’s attack, and that the Church provides concealment. Leonard does not grant blind trust, but he keeps the relationship secret and accepts the old man’s guidance while independently testing what he is told. (Chapter 365)
Red Glove Investigations
Under Soest, Leonard investigates supernatural cases across Loen as a Red Glove. Nightmare powers let him enter dreams for evidence and control, while promotion to Soul Assurer broadens his work to placating troubled spirits. He grows more methodical but retains the appearance of a man who lounges with his feet on a desk; the contrast becomes a useful mask, because his cases increasingly involve the Numinous Episcopate, artificial death, Church secrets, and clues that could expose either Pallez or Klein. (Chapters 365, 408–421, 617, 751, and 764)
Investigating Dwayne Dantès and the infiltration of Saint Samuel Cathedral, Leonard recognizes patterns connected to The Fool and refuses to accept that the infiltrator simply died behind Chanis Gate. His suspicions, correspondence, and Pallez’s deductions help him identify Dwayne’s connection to Klein’s surviving identity. When Amon’s avatars arrive in Backlund hunting Pallez, Leonard does not report the matter through normal Church channels, because an official strike could reveal their location through changes in fate. He instead uses a legitimate Southern Continent mission to withdraw, protecting both himself and his hidden companion without openly betraying the Church. (Chapters 845–852 and 870–890)
The Southern Continent investigation reunites Leonard with Daly Simone and brings the Red Gloves onto Ince’s trail. Leonard secretly exchanges information with Klein, while Daly risks suspicion by introducing their hidden conclusion—that a Hunter-pathway evil spirit possesses Ince—into the official analysis. When the confrontation begins, Ince’s control and the Quill’s arrangements leave Leonard trapped in the same helplessness he remembers from Megose’s attack. Pallez is asleep and cannot answer, so Leonard finally prays to The Fool on his own initiative, receives a view of Ince’s position, and strikes with the Fate Siphon charm. (Chapters 895, 933, and 938–944)
Klein finishes Ince and helps the mortally transformed Daly die in human form. Revenge fulfills Leonard’s central Red Glove goal but repeats the cost of Tingen: victory cannot restore Dunn, Klein’s old life, or Daly. Leonard keeps Klein’s survival secret from the Church and does not force him to return, accepting that loyalty to a former teammate can require silence rather than institutional possession. The experience completes his movement from relying on a hidden “protagonist’s” advantage to making consequential choices without Pallez’s immediate protection. (Chapters 944–950)
Revenge, Tarot, and The Fool's Return
Klein brings Leonard above the gray fog as The Star, where he initially searches the table for The World and struggles to conceal his unfamiliarity. The gathering reveals a network reaching the Forsaken Land of the Gods and angel-level affairs, giving him allies outside Church channels without requiring him to abandon Evernight. He advances to Spirit Warlock, seals a Terror Banshee in a tooth, and supports operations involving Amon and the Jacob treasure. His relationship with Pallez also becomes reciprocal: Leonard verifies the old man’s identity through a descendant’s dream, while Pallez expels him from Amon’s trap instead of using him as a shield. Leonard calls on The Fool and Evernight to save Pallez, who later restores himself to Sequence 1 and continues sharing Leonard’s body by choice. (Chapters 958–959, 980–1013, 1060–1069, 1175, 1204–1209, and 2289)
By Klein’s final gathering before sleep, Leonard is a Sequence 4 Nightwatcher and receives a mission to attack the Rose School of Thought and collect Mother Tree materials. Over the following years he becomes a high-ranking deacon, advances to Horror Bishop, and helps prepare The Fool’s awakening: he and Fors Wall arrange rewards and guidance for the dream team, including the Sleepless-to-Nightmare formulas used to recruit Franca. The former “poet” who neglected preparation is now one of the officials coordinating a god’s return while balancing Tarot Club secrecy with Church authority. (Chapters 1390–1392, 2289, and 2354)
When The Fool returns, Leonard is ordered to join Pallez in the assault on the Demoness Sect, terrify its high-ranking members to finish digesting Horror Bishop, and trade captured spoils for a Servant of Concealment characteristic. He borrows the Staff of the Stars, uses a prearranged dream of Blackthorn Security Company to manifest Klein against the Demoness of Crimson, and exchanges the captured Pillar of Severity for Solomon’s Mask so it can be handed to the Church. The characteristic trade is planned in the Tarot gathering; by the apocalypse, Leonard is explicitly grouped among the Servants of Concealment who put destabilized angels to sleep. (Chapters 2560–2566, 2575, and 2602)
At the beginning of the apocalypse, Leonard orders the Nighthawks under him to return home rather than spend their last moments waiting for an infiltration they cannot meaningfully stop. He then leaves Tingen to join Medici’s angelic legion, using concealment and sleep to preserve its cohesion until the battle ends. Afterward, Saint Leonard’s Cathedral bears his name; he returns to an ordinary room, lets active Red Gloves handle a routine loss-of-control case, and reads a newspaper. The quiet ending restores the everyday rhythm he loved in Tingen, but now as a guardian who has accepted the responsibility he once avoided. (Chapters 2595, 2602–2608, and 2610)
Appearance and personality
Leonard is a handsome man about 180 centimeters tall, with black hair, green eyes, and a habitually untidy appearance. He often wears a white shirt and black vest without arranging them properly, and his slightly disheveled hair and loose posture reinforce his desultory air. As a Red Glove he adds the unit’s identifying gloves; even in the late assault on the Demoness Sect, the familiar white shirt, black vest, red gloves, and messy hair remain his visible style. (Chapters 21, 42, 958, and 2562)
He is intelligent, intuitive, humorous, and capable of close observation, but initially half-hearted about matters that do not seize his interest. His “poet” image is mostly performance—he recites other writers more often than composing successfully—and his relaxed posture can look irresponsible. On questions involving Klein, Pallez, Tingen, or immediate danger, that laziness disappears: he tests identities, tracks contradictions, and can choose discretion over the apparently obvious official response. (Chapters 42, 365, 845–852, and 1065)
Survivor’s guilt is the central pressure behind his maturity. Leonard hates the younger self who assumed special status would compensate for insufficient effort, yet he does not become joyless; jokes, bad poetry, music, and domestic routine remain parts of the humanity he protects. His final command in Tingen shows the resulting ethic. Guardianship is not preserving the appearance of duty at any cost, but recognizing when subordinates should be sent home and taking the unbearable responsibility onto himself. (Chapters 944, 2505, 2595, and 2610)
Pathways and abilities
Leonard advances through Sleepless, Midnight Poet, Nightmare, Soul Assurer, Spirit Warlock, Nightwatcher, Horror Bishop, and Servant of Concealment on the Darkness pathway. His early abilities emphasize night activity, spiritual perception, song, dreams, and spirits; higher Sequences add godhood, fear, concealment, and angel-scale sleep. Pallez’s Marauder abilities and any Sealed Artifact Leonard carries are separate sources of power, even when they are coordinated closely with his own.
Sleepless and Midnight Poet
Sleepless reduces the need for sleep and grants greater strength, agility, perception, and performance at night. Leonard is competent at combat, shooting, climbing, and sensing, though he openly admits that locating people is not one of his strengths. These abilities make him a capable field agent rather than an overwhelming frontal combatant; trained opponents, higher Sequences, and attacks outside his perception can still defeat him. (Chapters 17, 42, and 73)
As a Midnight Poet, Leonard influences living beings and spirits through poems, chanting, humming, and song. A lullaby can make listeners torpid and place unprepared targets into sleep, while a calming recitation can soothe lingering spirits. The effect requires a performance that reaches the target and can be interrupted by noise, pain, resistance, or an opponent who acts before the verses take hold. The Sequence retains and modestly strengthens Sleepless combat traits, producing the Church’s joking description of its members as “violent poets.” (Chapters 44, 73, and 124)
Nightmare and Soul Assurer
Nightmare lets Leonard induce sleep, enter and shape dreams, question targets through dream symbolism, and draw another consciousness into a shared dream. He can move through dreams in ways that support covert investigation and later uses a deliberately implanted Blackthorn dream as the battlefield for a Staff of the Stars manifestation. A strong target can remain lucid, resist the dream, or exploit the connection, and Leonard himself may need to enter sleep, leaving his body or attention exposed unless allies and preparations cover him. (Chapters 365, 408–421, 751, 958–959, and 2566)
Soul Assurer deepens his influence over souls and spirits. Leonard placates paranormal disturbances as part of his potion acting, and in direct use his deepened green eyes can soothe a hostile spirit or slow a spiritually driven target. Placation is control and stabilization rather than certain destruction; it can be reinforced by allied psychological powers but may be insufficient against a vastly higher being, corruption, or a target whose body and mind are not governed primarily by a restless soul. (Chapters 764, 980, 1013, and 1069)
Spirit Warlock
A Spirit Warlock can seal spirits into teeth and release their forms and abilities as helpers. Leonard’s first sealed spirit is a Terror Banshee, a powerful spirit-world creature with a beautiful face, rotting body, and eagle wings that drains consciousness and injects terror. The system lets him control a target with Nightmare while a spirit attacks and Pallez or an item performs another task, but each component remains contingent: an unsuitable or destroyed spirit removes that option, and projection above the gray fog cleanses the carried spirit from Leonard’s Astral Projection. (Chapters 959 and 1069)
Leonard also employs natural spirits for specialized movement, including a mud-like spirit that carries him rapidly through the earth. These are acquired auxiliaries rather than permanent Darkness-pathway abilities, and using or losing one changes his available tactics. His Spirit Warlock work therefore depends on preparation, access to appropriate spirits, and the capacity to manage them without confusing their powers with Pallez’s independent parasitic presence. (Chapters 1205 and 2563)
Nightwatcher, Horror Bishop, and Servant of Concealment
By Nightwatcher, Leonard possesses demigod status and the Darkness pathway’s qualitative control over concealment, sleep, dreams, and the terror of night. The corpus identifies his Sequence but gives few isolated demonstrations attributable only to this stage, because his later major battles combine Pallez, Church blessings, and Grade 0 artifacts. His Mythical Creature characteristics and godhood also bring the standard high-Sequence dangers of exposure, corruption, and losing control, requiring anchors and institutional protection. (Chapters 1390 and 2562)
As a Horror Bishop, Leonard’s potion is digested by bringing genuine fear to high-ranking members of the Demoness Sect. This establishes fear as more than an emotional side effect: it is a central principle of the Sequence and its acting. The Fool’s blessing helps him complete the digestion during the assault, but the narrative does not provide a clean catalogue of unaided Horror Bishop techniques, so the Staff’s manifestations, Pallez’s time powers, and the borrowed concealment of the Goddess should not be assigned to the potion. (Chapters 2560–2566)
After advancing to Servant of Concealment, Leonard is an angel with Concealment authority and angel-scale dream and sleep powers. He can perceive the gathering of angels through concealment, join a high-level legion, and work with Arianna and other Servants to put affected angels into slumber before emotional authorities tear the formation apart. Concealment can hide a person, action, or region from ordinary detection, but equivalent authorities, prepared seals, divine attention, and the need to protect multiple battlefields prevent it from functioning as unrestricted disappearance. (Chapters 2595 and 2602–2608)
Pallez-assisted and item-assisted combat
Pallez can advise Leonard, operate an item, lend or teach Marauder-pathway techniques, manifest from Worms of Time, and intervene against dangers beyond Leonard’s own Sequence. Representative aid includes expelling Leonard from Amon’s trap, supplying Deceit knowledge that helps Klein escape, and applying time authority in the Demoness Sect assault. These are Pallez’s actions, not powers Leonard gains by being parasitized, and Pallez can be asleep, injured, absent, or unwilling to intervene. (Chapters 944, 1175, 1205, 2289, and 2563–2566)
Leonard plans around that distinction. He combines Nightmare with a spirit or artifact so several actions can occur while a target is controlled, and he asks Audrey to implant a precise dream cue before using the Staff of the Stars. This layered style turns his old reliance on a “fortuitous encounter” into deliberate teamwork, but it also means that separating him from Pallez, spirits, preparation, or borrowed equipment substantially narrows his options. (Chapters 959, 1069, and 2566)

Relationships
- Klein Moretti: Leonard’s Tingen teammate, fellow survivor, and partner in revenge. Leonard deduces that Klein lives, protects the secret, joins his Tarot Club as The Star, and later uses the memory of Klein at Blackthorn as a prepared weapon and emotional anchor.
- Pallez Zoroast: The injured angel who initially parasitizes Leonard to recover and hide from Amon. Mutual suspicion becomes a durable, protective companionship; Pallez remains with Leonard even after regaining Sequence 1.
- Dunn Smith: Leonard’s captain and model of a Nighthawk guardian. Dunn’s death turns Leonard’s untested self-confidence into guilt, discipline, and the resolve to kill Ince Zangwill.
- Daly Simone: Fellow Tingen survivor and Red Glove ally. She shields Leonard’s secret deduction during the Ince investigation and dies helping complete their revenge, making the victory inseparable from another loss.
- Ince Zangwill: The architect of the Tingen catastrophe and target of Leonard’s Red Glove career. Leonard helps expose his possession and uses the Fate Siphon charm against him during the final confrontation.
- Audrey Hall: Tarot Club colleague and psychological specialist. Audrey observes Leonard’s awkward arrival, later supports his dream operations, and implants the cue that turns his memory of Blackthorn into a controlled Staff of the Stars manifestation.
- Fors Wall: Fellow Tarot Club member and collaborator in the effort to awaken The Fool. Together they prepare dream-team recruitment, information, formulas, and rewards.
- Xio Derecha: Joins the Tarot Club beside Leonard and later exchanges the Pillar of Severity with him so each can obtain the Grade 0 artifact needed for an advancement trade.
- Alger Wilson: Senior Tarot Club member who helps Leonard understand the gathering’s markets and strategic reach. They later fight as complementary high-ranking members in the Demoness Sect operation.
- Amon: Pallez’s pursuer and one of Leonard’s greatest threats. Amon’s avatars force Leonard into covert withdrawal, while the true body nearly corrupts him and traps Pallez at 7 Pinster Street.
Items
- Staff of the Stars: A Grade 0 artifact lent to Leonard and specially sealed by The Fool for the Demoness Sect assault. It can manifest an understood person or ability for one attack through mental visualization; insufficient knowledge or uncontrolled thoughts can produce anomalies, so Leonard empties his mind and prepares exact cues before using it. (Chapters 2563 and 2566)
- Traveler's Bag: Leonard uses the bag to carry the Staff of the Stars and a prepared wooden door linked to 0-17’s sealed chamber. The bag cannot store the living 0-17 itself, making the door-and-seal arrangement necessary for safe deployment. (Chapters 2562–2563)
- Word of the Sea: Leonard obtains this offensive cane after joining the Tarot Club. It can release lightning, wind blades, water spheres, corrosive rain, underwater protection, and flight, but its negative effects include disruptive singing, falls, and stray lightning; it supplements rather than replaces his Darkness-pathway control. (Chapters 923, 987, and 1101)
- Fate Siphon charm: Klein makes the charm from one of Pallez Zoroast's Worms of Time and provides it for the revenge operation. Once The Fool reveals Ince's position, Leonard activates the consumable tool to transfer the fate of being struck by the Lightning Storm to Ince; it is not a permanent Darkness-pathway power. (Chapters 943–945)
