Edwina Edwards
Edwina Edwards, formerly Vice Admiral Iceberg, is the captain of the Golden Dream, a treasure hunter, and a teacher whose crew behaves more like an unruly class than a conventional pirate band. A Sequence 5 Mysticism Magister when she meets Klein Moretti, she joins him inside Groselle's Travels, later advances to demigod, and leaves piracy for service as a high-ranking deacon of the Church of the God of Knowledge and Wisdom. (Chapters 292, 534–577, 690–707, 2361, and 2560)
Biography
Role in the Central Conflict
Edwina builds the Golden Dream around treasure hunting, education, and controlled independence. She trains crew members in languages and mysticism, supports the Rorsted resistance through Danitz, and investigates relics instead of treating plunder as an end in itself. When Danitz becomes entangled with Gehrman Sparrow, Edwina uses a long-distance Soulfall Ritual to enter his dream, assess the danger, and communicate without exposing her ship. Her first response to Klein is not a threat but a series of questions calibrated to his education so she can explain information at the right level. (Chapters 499, 534–536, and 555)
She later invites Klein aboard the Golden Dream to examine his affiliations and exchange knowledge. Edwina shows him relics, explains what she knows, and offers to sell the enigmatic Groselle's Travels cheaply on the condition that he share any discovery, because unresolved knowledge troubles her more than lost profit. Her caution remains real—she probes whether a hidden organization backs him and keeps dangerous crew matters compartmentalized—but the meeting creates a durable channel for intelligence and research. (Chapters 574–579 and 586–597)
Anderson Hood later uses the book against her, causing Edwina, Danitz, Klein, and Anderson to be swallowed into its frozen story world. Edwina's pearl earring gives Klein a connection for divination, allowing him to locate her group and enter after them. Inside, her priority shifts from guarding secrets to understanding the ancient companions and escaping together. She contributes copied powers, analysis, and emotional disruption during the fight with the frost dragon Ulyssan, repeatedly creating openings rather than attempting to overpower it alone. (Chapters 690–701)
The group wins, but Groselle dies and the ancient companions age to death immediately after returning to reality. Edwina recognizes that their centuries in the book were real enough to exhaust their natural lifespans and helps preserve their remains and final wishes. She later stores Siatas and Mobet's interlocked bones and the golden cup carefully rather than treating the dead as loot. The expedition makes her one of the few living witnesses to the book's ancient history and strengthens the mutual trust between her, Klein, Anderson, and Danitz. (Chapters 702–707 and 765)
In later years Edwina leaves the pirate-admiral life, advances to demigod, and becomes a high-ranking deacon of the Church of Knowledge. Klein's dream recasts her as Principal Ai Nana of a tutoring school, preserving her habit of educating pirates and Beyonders; she even teaches Ludwig. When Lumian Lee meets the real Edwina after the dream campaign, she says without hesitation that she prefers her current life, where she can learn and discover something every day, to returning to the sea as Vice Admiral Iceberg. (Chapters 2356–2361 and 2560)
Appearance and personality
Edwina is a beautiful woman with light-blue eyes and long brown hair parted in the middle and tied in a simple knot. Her clothing is practical but carries an Intis style: a fitted shirt or blouse, dark trousers, and leather boots make her look alternately like a professional teacher and a capable pirate. In the dream city, the same qualities become the composed appearance of a tutoring-school principal. (Chapters 534–535, 575, 690–691, and 2356–2361)
She is calm, literal, patient, and intensely curious. Edwina often explains more than a listener expected, organizes conversations like lessons, and values knowledge even when it is painful. Her reserve does not mean indifference: she orders Danitz to remain safe during the frost-dragon fight, trusts Klein's unseen plan, mourns the book companions, and later rejects ignorance as an acceptable form of happiness. (Chapters 534–536, 699–707, and 2560)
Pathways and abilities
Edwina follows the Reader pathway of the Church of the God of Knowledge and Wisdom. She is explicitly Sequence 5 Mysticism Magister during her pirate-admiral period and explicitly not yet a demigod in the book world. By Klein's dream campaign she is identified as a demigod of the Church, and by the latest chapter she is a high-ranking deacon. The corpus does not directly state her later potion title or exact Sequence, so it is safest to record a progression from Sequence 5 to at least Sequence 4 rather than assign a more specific late rank. (Chapters 534, 696, 2361, and 2560)
Knowledge, analysis, and ritual magic
Edwina possesses broad, organized knowledge of history, languages, spirit-world creatures, potion theory, and ritual magic. She can analyze unfamiliar phenomena, design long-distance dream contact, perform Soulfall rituals, and simulate the creation of mystical items, though she warns that her success rate is not guaranteed. Knowledge is an enabling condition for her powers: incomplete understanding reduces what she can reproduce or safely attempt. (Chapters 534–536 and 575–577)
Her education also supports prediction and tactical reading. She recognizes the artificial nature of potion powers inside Groselle's Travels, identifies that the ancient companions have exceeded their outside lifespans, and coordinates mimicked abilities around allies' plans. This is disciplined inference, not omniscience; she studies the book for years without opening its sealed pages and willingly seeks Klein's help when her methods fail. (Chapters 576–577 and 696–707)
Mysticism Magister imitation
As a Mysticism Magister, Edwina can analyze and imitate Beyonder powers she has observed and understood. In the frost-dragon battle she reproduces wind to move, a Spectator-like emotional disturbance to force Ulyssan to purge hostile thoughts, Guardian-like dawn defenses, and holy light to thaw a frozen companion. These are simulated powers, not evidence that she has consumed potions from those pathways. (Chapters 699–702)
Imitations are weaker or less durable than the originals and require comprehension. Her copied invisibility and combat effects have limited duration, while secret techniques cannot substitute for the underlying pathway in every context—for example, she can imitate undead-related power but cannot use that imitation to complete a messenger contract. She therefore fights as a flexible coordinator and scholar rather than a specialist superior to every copied source. (Chapters 535, 577, and 699–702)
Later demigod status
Edwina's exact post-piracy abilities are not demonstrated in a full battle. The dream city suppresses outside powers and turns her real traits into the role of an educator, so Principal Ai's ordinary authority cannot be used as a list of demigod techniques. Her demigod status and Church rank are explicit, but prophecy or other higher Reader powers should not be attributed to her without a direct demonstration. (Chapters 2361, 2389, and 2560)
Relationships
- Danitz: Danitz is Edwina's subordinate, student, messenger, and frequent source of exasperation. She educates and protects him while trusting him with missions linking the Golden Dream, Klein, and the Rorsted resistance. (Chapters 499, 534–536, 574–577, and 765)
- Klein Moretti: Edwina begins by cautiously assessing Gehrman Sparrow and develops a scholarly alliance with him. Their shared survival in Groselle's Travels turns information exchange into trust between companions. (Chapters 534–597 and 690–707)
- Anderson Hood: Anderson is both rival treasure hunter and battlefield companion. His trick pulls Edwina into the book, but they cooperate effectively against Ulyssan and remain linked through the dream city's tutoring school. (Chapters 690–707 and 2356–2389)
- Ludwig: Ludwig studies under Edwina through the Church of Knowledge and again appears as one of Principal Ai's students in Klein's dream. (Chapters 2356–2357)
- Church of the God of Knowledge and Wisdom: The Church is the institutional source of Edwina's pathway and later becomes her overt home. She ultimately prefers its life of continuing study and discovery to piracy. (Chapters 575–577, 2361, and 2560)
Items
- Groselle's Travels: An ancient goatskin book recovered from a shipwreck and studied by Edwina for years. It swallows her group into its story world; after their escape, Klein takes custody while Edwina retains the knowledge and consequences of the expedition. (Chapters 576–577 and 690–707)
- Pearl earring: One of Edwina's personal earrings becomes the divination medium Klein uses to locate her after the book swallows her. It is a sympathetic link, not the source of her pathway abilities. (Chapters 690–693)
- Golden Dream's Cannon of Purification: A ritual cannon installed on her ship. It can fire only ten times before six Priests of Light must replenish it through ritual, making it a crew resource with strict logistical limits rather than Edwina's innate holy-light power. (Chapter 575)
- Collector's relics: Edwina preserves historical coins, a giant iron key, ancient bones, and other expedition evidence for study. Their uncertain functions are kept distinct from artifacts she can actively wield. (Chapters 576–577 and 765)
