Groselle's Travels

Groselle's Travels is a goatskin-bound book whose unfinished adventure is a real enclosed world. It draws readers from different eras into the quest of the giant Groselle and preserves story-born counterparts of its cast even after the original entrants leave or die.

History

The unfinished dragon hunt

Edwina Edwards acquires the apparently ancient Feysac book from a ship that had lain underwater for 165 years; despite the wreck, it is undamaged. Its visible story follows Groselle and companions drawn from different peoples and epochs as they hunt the frost dragon known as the King of the North, but the final pages remain stuck on the unresolved expedition. Research into former owners reveals the concealed cost: readers had disappeared into the book over centuries and become members of the cast. Edwina eventually lets Klein Moretti take the book for study. (Chapters 576–577 and 692–694)

Completing the story

Klein, Edwina, and their allies enter by placing blood on the cover. Inside, they meet the long-preserved travelers and finish the hunt by defeating the King of the North. Completion opens the way out, but it also ends the originals' unnaturally extended lives; the figures later found inside are dreamlike or narrative reproductions rather than proof that those people survived. The adventure also exposes a deeper layer linked to Liveseyd, the sea of collective subconscious, and the Dragon of Imagination's arrangements. Audrey Hall later uses the book's Hall of Truth and collective-subconscious environment during investigations tied to that legacy. (Chapters 693–704, 714–718, and 1062–1075)

Shield, refuge, and disappearance

Klein keeps the book above the gray fog when possible and uses its extraordinary durability as a shield. He can enter its world to evade immediate danger, and historical projections of the book retain this utility, although carrying the real object for too long risks involuntary entry. During Klein's escape from Zaratul, he enters the book once more. Adam appears in the Hall of Truth, forces Klein back outside, and the trembling book then disappears. The corpus does not explicitly establish whether Adam retained it or sent it elsewhere. (Chapters 728–730, 809, 888, and 1148–1150)

Abilities and properties

• Blood smeared on the cover provides a direct route into the story world. Prolonged possession can also pull a bearer inside without consent. (Chapters 692–694 and 888)
• The enclosed world preserves entrants from widely separated historical periods and incorporates their actions into its developing narrative. Completing the central story permits departure, but it does not grant ordinary immortality: someone released after millennia would rapidly age and die, while later internal versions may be story-generated copies. (Chapters 693–704 and 1067)
• The book remains connected to the outside through its physical body and can maintain links to the gray fog. It can be entered as a refuge, but escape still depends on the book-world's rules or powerful external intervention. (Chapters 694, 809, and 1149–1150)
• Its cover and pages withstand attacks far beyond an ordinary book. Klein fails to meaningfully damage it above the gray fog and later uses it to block a saint-level attack, though its small dimensions limit what it can shield. (Chapters 728–730)
• Blood from a historical projection cannot be used to create a contradictory encounter with its own past. The book's connection to 0-08 also makes its historical projection easier to summon, but that connection is dangerous rather than a controllable benefit. (Chapters 1140 and 1143)
• The world reaches the sea of collective subconscious and contains Liveseyd and the Hall of Truth. Its deepest bronze-door region is linked to forces associated with the Chaos Sea, making deeper exploration hazardous even after the dragon hunt is complete. (Chapters 1062–1075)

Ownership and custody
