Anderson Hood
Anderson Hood is an independent bounty hunter whose skill and reputation earn him the disputed title of the Fog Sea's Strongest Hunter. His easy provocation, bad luck, and refusal to explain a plan until it has already inconvenienced someone make him a comic counterpoint to Klein Moretti and Danitz. Beneath that manner is a patient tactician who survives divine arrangements, turns an implanted foreign object into an advancement option, and later uses a compromised dream identity to sabotage the Celestial Worthy's allies.
Biography
Role in the Central Conflict
Anderson meets Klein in the dangerous waters around the Battle of the Gods Ruins, where looking at a mural has left him plagued by escalating bad luck. He joins Klein and the crew of the Future because cooperation offers the best chance to leave, yet his constant jokes and provocations make even useful warnings sound suspect. The bad luck nearly kills him through ordinary hot water, forcing him to use a straw substitute and seek help rather than trust his reputation. He nevertheless fights through dream abnormalities, explores Groselle's Travels, and helps defeat the King of the North. His choice to remain useful while openly admitting fear establishes the pattern behind the swagger: he is willing to retreat or bargain before a danger becomes irreversible. (Chapters 649–704)
That caution fails to keep him outside Adam's design. Anderson is captured, soaked in strange blood and ingredients, and left with a chrysalis-like foreign object inside his body that attracts High-Sequence Hunter-pathway Beyonders. The implantation helps draw Ince Zangwill and the Red Angel evil spirit into Klein's revenge operation, making Anderson an unwitting lure. Afterward, he tries to cut it out, then accepts that ordinary surgery cannot undo something diffused through his flesh. Edwina Edwards helps isolate it, and Anderson chooses the risky solution—obtain the Iron-blooded Knight formula and absorb it during advancement—over cleansing that might strip away most of his characteristics. The corpus confirms the formula and preparations, but does not explicitly confirm that he completes Sequence 4. (Chapters 930–952, 1031–1043, and 1179)
Anderson repays the network around Klein through work rather than allegiance. He helps Danitz gather Conspirer ingredients, stages interrogations so informants reveal themselves without realizing the performance, and tracks Vice Admiral Ailment while recognizing the disease screen around her ship. During the continental war he commands a militia of Hunters, Provokers, and Pyromaniacs, using their shared hostility and desire to surrender as information rather than demanding blind loyalty. His position gives him a team suitable for the Iron-blooded Knight ritual, but the scene closes under divine intervention before an advancement is shown. In later years he survives, remains in Lenburg, and hides so thoroughly that the Major Arcana card holders cannot locate him. (Chapters 1089–1107, 1179, 1259, and 2401)
The Fool's dream gives Anderson a second central role. His ordinary dream image teaches languages at Dream Tutoring Classes, while corruption connected to the Fantasy Association creates a mute Painter version confined to an art studio. Contact with that abnormal image stimulates the real Anderson and lets his consciousness participate through a loophole in the dream. He takes resources from Zaratulstra's side, sabotages the intended resurrection of the Oracle by reporting the death quickly, tests Lumian through paintings, and then reveals enough of the conspiracy for Lumian's team to act without openly breaking the dream's balance. At the decisive moment he declares his task complete and burns the uninhabited hostel tied to the Painter operation. Klein later counts Anderson among the contributors to awakening him, while Anderson's physical body remains alive and hidden in reality. (Chapters 2356–2401, 2422–2437, and 2460–2465)
Appearance and personality
Anderson is an ordinarily handsome young man with short blond hair, often combed in a seventy-thirty part, and dark green eyes. He commonly wears practical shirts and a vest, a black glove on his left hand, and carries a pitch-black short sword. His dream-city manifestation dresses more casually in patterned T-shirts or works as a smiling foreign-language teacher, preserving the same approachable appearance even when the mute Painter state makes his actions uncanny. (Chapters 649, 687, 895, 952, 1428, and 2383–2389)
He is provocative, irreverent, adaptable, and extremely difficult to embarrass. Anderson needles dangerous people because Provoker behavior suits both his pathway and his temperament, but he also uses humor to hide worry, gather reactions, and keep ownership of a conversation. He plans several steps ahead, readily exploits allies, and accepts a benefit from enemies while looking for a way to return its danger to them. His self-preservation is not cowardice: once he understands the stakes, he accepts being bait, leads troops, and enters a hostile dream. The jokes make his motives opaque; the repeated choice to help when withdrawal would be safer makes the loyalty beneath them legible. (Chapters 656–687, 930–952, 1095–1107, 1259, and 2383–2460)
Pathways and abilities
Anderson follows the Hunter pathway and is explicitly a Sequence 5 Reaper when introduced. He has access to the accumulated abilities of Hunter, Provoker, Pyromaniac, Conspirer, and Reaper. Although he obtains the Iron-blooded Knight formula and a possible characteristic inside his body, no completed Sequence 4 advancement is shown; his later dream abilities come from the Painter anomaly, not proof of a Hunter-pathway promotion. (Chapters 656, 675, 952, 1040–1043, and 1179–1259)
Hunter gives him enhanced physical ability, tracking, wilderness survival, trap use, and broad weapon proficiency. Provoker lets him reliably inflame anger and push a target toward an unwise response, but it works through emotion rather than absolute compulsion; disciplined opponents can recognize the attempt or use their anger deliberately. Anderson combines the effect with observation, so even a refusal to react tells him that a group has reached a prior agreement. (Chapters 656–687 and 1259)
As a Pyromaniac he creates, shapes, and compresses fire, launches fireballs, forms flaming weapons, and uses explosions to control terrain. Conspirer gives stronger analysis, patience, sensitivity to plots, and the ability to build layered deceptions around an enemy's expected choices. Reaper sharpens lethal attacks and recognition of weaknesses, making his swordsmanship, ambushes, and fire more decisive against damaged or exposed prey. These abilities remain finite: powerful monsters can overwhelm him directly, disease and bad luck bypass ordinary combat preparation, and a plan still needs reliable information. (Chapters 699, 1095–1107, and 1259)
The chrysalis implanted by Adam creates convergence with High-Sequence Hunter Beyonders and threatens to seep through and reconstruct Anderson's body and brain. Isolation delays that process; proposed solutions are cleansing by an Unshadowed, at the risk of losing Anderson's own characteristics, or absorbing it through a proper Iron-blooded Knight potion and ritual. In The Fool's dream, a separate Painter influence lets Anderson create and enter prepared paintings, animate a mute version of himself, and make painted environments attack. The mute manifestation cannot freely leave its studio and is weak under the dream's restrictions, so Anderson uses it for deception and sabotage rather than treating it as a full second body. (Chapters 952, 1040–1043, and 2383–2390)
Relationships

- Danitz: Rival, partner, and favorite target for provocation. Anderson helps Danitz obtain Conspirer ingredients and learn more disciplined Hunter tactics while extracting favors and entertainment from him.
- Edwina Edwards: Scholar and temporary ally who helps isolate the foreign object. In the dream, her manifestation employs Anderson at Dream Tutoring Classes.
- Lumian Lee: Fellow Hunter and conspiratorial contact in The Fool's dream. Anderson tests Lumian, recognizes him as an outsider, and supplies indirect intelligence while preserving room to deny cooperation.
- Adam: The architect who uses Anderson as a lure by implanting the chrysalis. Anderson survives the arrangement and attempts to convert its lingering danger into a route to advancement.
Items
- Death Brachydont: Anderson's dull, pitch-black short sword and habitual close-combat weapon. It supports his Reaper skill but is not given a complete independent power profile in the supplied corpus. (Chapters 699 and 952)
- Straw substitute: A small straw doll marked with a face absorbs a lethal accident during Anderson's period of extreme bad luck. It is consumed by the substitution rather than remaining a long-term possession. (Chapter 675)
- Groselle's Travels: Anderson enters the book world with Klein's group and fights alongside its inhabitants. He is a participant, not the item's owner. (Chapters 699–704)
