Albus Medici
Biography
Cordu, Trier, and the Approaching Apocalypse
Albus first appears among Gardner Martin's Iron and Blood Cross Order branch as a dark-red-haired operative with no public portfolio. He needlessly antagonizes Lumian Lee during the latter's initiation, recommends using chaos against ordinary institutions, and later helps trace Cordu's wanted padre Guillaume Bénet through the Dill Brothel. The provocations establish a rivalry, but they also conceal his actual standing: he is not merely another subordinate. His surname identifies him as a direct descendant of the ancient Red Angel, and his appearances at the Sacred Heart Cloister and around the Order's hidden operations suggest that he is already following a line of work broader than Gardner's local commands. (Chapters 1715–1717, 1744, and 1756–1757)
At Red Swan Castle, Albus openly gives his full name to Count Poufer Sauron and joins Lumian and Elros Einhorn in the underground palace. The family names are deliberate provocations aimed at the ancient Sauron–Einhorn–Medici conflict. Albus tests the palace's monsters, uses flame transformation to intercept a mutated Hunter spider, destroys dormant iron soldiers with Delayed Explosions, and repeatedly appears reckless so that his companions will reveal their knowledge or act first. His stated wish to end the Sauron curse is only a partial truth: his ancestor wants to learn what happened to Vermonda Sauron and recover the Conqueror characteristic hidden in Fourth Epoch Trier. Albus's lineage and presence keep the rival angels wary, but he displays no independent angelic power when the operation culminates; Medici, not Albus, emerges to subdue Vermonda and seize the characteristic. (Chapters 1855–1866 and 1923)
After Medici rebuilds the Red of War, Albus enters Morora as his descendant and agent in the struggle over 0-01, Salinger's Blood Banner. He allows himself to be arrested as an exile, investigates the city's anomalous food and prisoners, steals the Abscessed Hand's head, and hides it inside the underground mausoleum as both leverage and provocation. His continued connection to the Iron and Blood Cross Order lets him turn Lumian's search into an ambush with Gusain, yet every alliance is provisional: Albus and Gusain try to eliminate competitors, Julie shadows Albus, Wanak offers cooperation against him, and Lumian uses all of them to force further collisions. Albus survives the resulting group attack through flame dispersion, metalization, Fog of War, and damage-sharing tied to his ancestor, demonstrating that his danger comes from preparation and a support network rather than a sudden personal advancement to demigod. (Chapters 2227–2250)
Inside the mausoleum, Albus shares the sight and voices of 0-01's iron soldiers, offering the same connection to Lumian while expecting it might turn him into a puppet. He temporarily cooperates with Lumian against the Demonesses and the Mirror Person, but uses companions as screens whenever possible. When a false divine descent calls down a meteor, Albus borrows Sequence 4 power, transforms into a white-blue flame spear, metalizes his body, puts two iron puppets between himself and the blast, and shifts part of the damage to Medici. He then fights through the mirror battlefield, kills Celeste by trapping her substitutions inside Fog of War and timing repeated explosions, and delays long enough for the Banner to resonate with his ancestor. His claim that 0-01 can free itself is a feint: he actually needs Medici family blood to mark it and tries to make Lumian overlook that final requirement. (Chapters 2260–2271)
The last gamble does not make Albus the Banner's proxy. The mausoleum's hidden taboos weaken his body, 0-01 begins tearing his neck free and assimilating his flame form, and Lumian refuses the bait of approaching him. Albus nevertheless flicks a small amount of his blood onto the charred flag, deliberately leaving a future piece on the board even though the resonance has not reached the needed threshold. With his neck almost severed, he detonates a crystal necklace to open the special mirror world and jumps through before 0-01 can absorb him. The escape succeeds: later narration treats Morora as a past contest rather than his death, and he is explicitly shown alive beside Medici on a coastline. When Medici later trades away his Conqueror characteristics, he makes protection of descendants “like Albus” one of Lumian's conditions. Albus's latest confirmed state is therefore alive, still a Reaper personally and a protected member of the Red of War, not a Red Priest or independent angel. (Chapters 2271–2273, 2285, 2513, and 2552)
Appearance and personality
Albus is a handsome young man whose sharp brown eyebrows, piercing eyes, and aggressive features make him look immediately unlikable. His hair carries a dark-red tint and becomes fully fiery when he channels stronger Hunter power. In Trier he wears hunting clothes; in Morora his characteristic outfit is a black jacket patterned with dark red. His relaxed pose—one leg crossed, ankle shaking, hands in his pockets—echoes Medici's habit of lounging while treating a confrontation as entertainment. Under borrowed power his skin and inner structure become iron-black, his eyes take on a metallic hue, and his body can transform into crimson, blazing-white, or blue-tinged flame. (Chapters 1715–1717, 1855–1856, 2227–2229, and 2263–2269)
He is habitually provocative, mocking, and apparently reckless, but the recklessness is normally a controlled experiment. Albus insults Elros to expose her family loyalties, attacks suspicious rooms to trigger defenses from a distance, and talks at length over Celeste's corpse partly so that Lumian will hear a selected lie. He understands that both haste and delay can lose a war and continuously positions other people between himself and an unknown threat. His sense of humor is cruel, his alliances openly distrustful, and his readiness to use ordinary people or temporary partners as bait makes him one of Lumian's clearest mirrors on the Hunter pathway. (Chapters 1716–1717, 1856–1864, 2247–2249, and 2260–2271)
Albus is loyal to Medici without being a passive vessel. He refers to the Red Angel with reverence, carries out his plan for the Banner, and relies on the Red of War connection, but makes local judgments when the Morora seal prevents direct guidance. He knows when to preserve a mark rather than force a lost contest and when to flee instead of dying for symbolic pride. The precise bargain between them is not narrated, yet Medici's later demand that Lumian protect Albus confirms that the ancestor regards him as family and a valued subordinate rather than expendable equipment. (Chapters 1865, 2227–2229, 2260–2272, and 2552)
Pathways and abilities
Albus follows the Red Priest pathway. At Red Swan Castle, Lumian judges him to be at least a well-digested Pyromaniac and suspects Conspirer-level planning; by Morora, the comparisons establish that Lumian has become a Reaper and that Albus has likewise made progress, while the narrative continues to contrast Albus's own body with temporary power above Sequence 5. The safest supported state is Sequence 5 Reaper, supplemented by the Red of War bond to Medici, which can lend Sequence 4 and weakened higher abilities. Nothing in the corpus shows Albus consuming an Iron-blooded Knight characteristic or becoming an independent demigod. (Chapters 1858–1862, 2229, 2244–2249, and 2263)
Hunter senses, provocation, and conspiracy
Albus possesses a Hunter's heightened perception, spatial judgment, danger intuition, tracking skill, and ability to conceal his own trail and goal. He notices prey patterns, reads a battlefield through sound while blindfolded, and can locate the violently fluttering Banner without looking at it. Provocation draws anger or exposes priorities, but it is not mind control; Lumian and Elros routinely recognize the attempt and answer with their own traps. Albus therefore uses mockery as reconnaissance, watching what a target defends, denies, or rushes to prove. (Chapters 1715–1717, 1756–1757, 1856–1864, 2232, and 2272)
His conspiracies work by placing several real dangers in conflict. He uses an ordinary poet to expose a Hunter spider, lets rivals attack one another in Morora, hides the Abscessed Hand's head where retrieval will trigger mausoleum rules, and tells Celeste enough truth about 0-01 to direct her attention at the wrong instant. These arrangements require advance knowledge, plausible motives, and timing. Lumian's study of sealing theory defeats Albus's assumption about the hidden taboo, while refusal to rush the Banner denies Albus a chance to counterattack. Albus can dominate chaotic situations only while he understands enough of their rules. (Chapters 1859–1864, 2229–2249, and 2260–2272)
Personal fire and Reaper combat
Albus can create and control crimson fire, compress it into white-hot balls, shape it into spears and swords, and delay explosions until he has left the danger area. Flame Transformation lets him turn wholly or partly into a projectile, intercept an attack, disperse around physical harm, regroup at another point, or travel quickly. At Red Swan Castle he counters a flaming spider by becoming a spear and destroys iron soldiers with planted Delayed Explosions; in Morora he alternates between human, flame-person, and spear states to evade webs, impacts, and attempts to sever his neck. Fire-resistant Hunters, Demoness black flames, sealed spaces, and attacks that affect spirit or fate can still injure him, and repeated transformation consumes spirituality while doing nothing to remove corruption already attached to him. (Chapters 1859–1862 and 2248–2272)
As a Reaper, Albus has the pathway's precision, battlefield appraisal, and ability to identify or create a decisive opening. He rapidly adjusts the force and frequency of fireballs so Celeste's Mirror Substitutions are destroyed without dispersing the Fog of War, denying her the fraction of time needed to enter the mirror world. He also combines a monstrous bone-and-flesh sword with close combat, striking at weapon and body weak points. The feat is conditional: Celeste has already been affected by a mystical pathogen and distracted by 0-01, while Albus himself becomes too weak afterward to run or lift the sword normally. (Chapters 2268–2271)
Red of War borrowing and damage distribution
Albus belongs to the Red of War rebuilt by Medici. Members can concentrate power toward the commander, receive a share of his power in return, and distribute damage through the collective bond. In Morora this lets Albus temporarily metalize his body like an Iron-blooded Knight, create Fog of War, use hotter white-blue flame, share the perception of iron soldier puppets, and endure impacts beyond a normal Reaper. The metal body improves strength, defense, and resistance to dismemberment; Fog of War reduces visibility, disrupts orientation and spirit-world coordinates, and can cause a target exiting through mirrors to reappear within the same kill zone. (Chapters 2244–2249 and 2260–2270)
These are lineage-supported and organizational powers, not proof of Albus's own Sequence. Morora's seal sharply attenuates the bond: he can use at most temporary Sequence 4 strength plus some weakened higher effects and transfer no more than about one-third of the damage. Medici cannot simply descend, control 0-01, or remove Albus from every trap. Even with two puppet shields, metalization, flame transformation, and damage-sharing, the meteor leaves Albus injured and spitting burning blood. Fog can be blown apart by a sufficiently strong hurricane, indiscriminate explosions can thin it, and mirror techniques can bypass its perimeter if prepared before entrapment. (Chapters 2244, 2248–2249, and 2263–2269)
Soldier-puppet perception and the Banner
Because Medici once held 0-01 and because Albus is linked to him, Albus can perceive through the Banner's iron soldiers and make their mouths relay his voice. This grants sight while his own eyes are covered and lets him monitor multiple corridors, but it does not make the soldiers his permanent creations or place the Uniqueness under his command. He still uses the puppets as expendable shields, and he cannot stop Wanak—0-01's current special puppet—from drawing on the local system. Offering shared vision to Lumian may also carry the danger of greater submission to the Banner, which is why Lumian refuses it. (Chapters 2260–2263)
Medici blood resonates with Salinger's Blood Banner, allowing Albus to leave a possible claim or future influence. The process is not automatic ownership. He must approach through the Banner's corruption, avoid direct sight, keep his body from being decapitated, and physically place blood on the charred flag. The first drop produces no immediate response because the resonance and awakening state are wrong; 0-01 instead attempts to assimilate his flame. Albus's successful mark is therefore a contingency, while Lumian becomes the actual proxy after exploiting the Banner's later response. (Chapters 2268–2273)
Temporary mirror-world access
Albus's mirror travel is item-derived, not a Red Priest pathway ability. A crystal necklace can explode to create a vortex into the special mirror world, and remnants of Celeste's Mirror Maze briefly let him perform a mirror-like substitution during battle. The necklace is consumed when activated, ordinary mirror travel is unreliable within a prepared Mirror Maze, and 0-01 can burn away the resulting exit. Albus uses the last opening to escape Morora with his neck almost severed; the method saves his life but does not demonstrate repeatable personal control over mirrors. (Chapters 2268–2272)
Relationships
- Medici: Albus's ancestor, commander, and source of Red of War support. Albus advances Medici's claim to 0-01, while Medici later makes Albus's protection a condition of his bargain with Lumian.
- Lumian Lee: Albus's principal peer-rival. They cooperate when surrounded by stronger threats, continuously try to make each other reveal trump cards, and compete to mark the Banner; Lumian secures the proxy position while Albus preserves a future blood claim.
- Gardner Martin: Albus's nominal commanding officer in the Trier branch of the Iron and Blood Cross Order. Albus attends his gatherings and operations but serves a Medici agenda larger than the branch.
- Poufer Sauron: The Sauron descendant before whom Albus deliberately reveals his surname. Poufer's castle gives Albus access to the family curse and the trail leading toward Vermonda's characteristic.
- Elros Einhorn: A Hunter from the rival Einhorn and Sauron bloodlines. Her restrained knowledge and command over the palace's spiders make her both temporary teammate and target of Albus's provocations.
- Julie: A Demoness competitor in Morora who shadows and repeatedly attacks Albus. Their shifting conflict helps force the contest into the mausoleum, where her blood and borrowed powers further destabilize 0-01.
- Wanak: Morora's strongest exile and a special puppet of 0-01. Albus helps injure him but cannot neutralize his local connection; Wanak's weather and puppet authority remain major counters to Albus's borrowed powers.
Items
- Salinger's Blood Banner: The Red Priest Uniqueness designated 0-01 and the object of Albus's Morora mission. His ancestry provides resonance and knowledge, but the Banner is never his possession; it nearly assimilates him, and Lumian becomes its proxy. (Chapters 2227–2273)
- Crystal necklace: An unnamed chain of crystals worn around Albus's wrist. Detonating it opens a one-use vortex into the special mirror world, allowing his escape while almost decapitated. It is a consumable external safeguard and not evidence that Albus has Demoness or Apprentice powers. (Chapters 2266–2272)
- Iron soldier puppets: Local servants of 0-01 through which Albus borrows sight and speech. He also carries two into the meteor strike as expendable shields. They belong to the Banner's sealed environment rather than to Albus personally. (Chapters 2260–2263)
