Mo Yu

Mo Yu is the third princess of Tianwu Kingdom, a master teacher and multi-occupation prodigy who becomes the empress of Xuanyuan Kingdom. Her early rivalry with Zhang Xuan develops into respect and unrequited affection, but her lasting importance lies in the judgment, professional knowledge, and political resolve with which she turns an unexpected appointment into a stable and growing empire.

Biography

The Beast Hall and Red Lotus Ridge

Mo Yu first appears at the Xuanluo Mountain Range Beast Hall as a celebrated but aloof young genius. She has spent less than a year studying beast taming, yet arrives for the official examination with a Tongxuan-realm Viridescent Eagle whose favor she has cultivated at great expense. Accustomed to being courted by princes and praised for her talent, she initially treats Zhang Xuan as an ignorant outsider and resents his casual claim that he can attempt the same examination. When he answers the theoretical questions with ease, wins over her eagle, and even triggers an evolution in its bloodline, her certainty gives way to curiosity. Rather than merely preserving her pride, she approaches him to ask whether he is a master teacher and begins reconsidering the limits of her own knowledge. (Chapters 241–255)

Her desire to advance as an apothecary gives that curiosity a practical purpose. Mo Yu accepts Zhang Xuan's guidance while attempting a grade-2 pinnacle pill, but a lapse in timing causes a violent reaction and destroys the cauldron; she is only a 1-star apothecary at this point and lacks the strength to suppress the clashing medicinal energies herself. The pills nevertheless form under Zhang Xuan's direction. Recognizing how much she still has to learn, she bargains information and access to the Great Herb King in return for further instruction, then accompanies Zhang Xuan toward Red Lotus Ridge despite repeatedly objecting to the risks and improprieties of his improvised infiltration. Three days of tutoring bring her pill-forging skill to the standard required for the 2-star examination, while their journey establishes a pattern that continues throughout their relationship: Mo Yu supplies local knowledge, status, and caution, while Zhang Xuan repeatedly forces her to revise what she believes possible. Tianwu's Succession and the Lin Clan Crisis

Back in Tianwu Royal City, Mo Yu faces pressure as both a princess and her father's intended successor. When Prince Fei Xuan offers a political marriage linked to aid for Tianwu's ailing guardian beast, she refuses to surrender the decision to court diplomacy. Instead, she sets the condition that he defeat her strengthened Viridescent Eagle; its quick victory sends the suitor away without forcing her father to trade her future for the offered resource. Around the same time, she recognizes that the physician-guild leader “Liu Cheng” is Zhang Xuan in disguise. She keeps his identity secret, helps him navigate the palace, and trusts his diagnosis of the poisoned Gold-tailed Lion, understanding that the beast's survival is essential to restraining the Lin Clan and protecting the royal succession. Mo Yu's fondness for watching Zhang Xuan's two sets of students compete causes her to conceal an impending duel from him, a choice she regrets when the confrontation becomes personally humiliating for him. She tries to defuse the dispute and later invites him into Tianwu's royal book collection as both a gesture of goodwill and an apology. That visit places her beside him when the Lin Clan demands the right to search the palace for Lu Chong. Conscious that Tianwu cannot safely defy a clan backed by Xuanyuan Kingdom, she challenges the clan's evidence, warns Zhang Xuan against escalating the confrontation, and nevertheless defends him against the claim that a teacher must bear automatic guilt for every act of a student. Her conduct does not remove the political danger, but it shows her moving beyond rivalry: she uses the limited authority available to her to protect the palace, Zhang Xuan, and the principle of a teacher's proper responsibility. Lu Chong's Injury and the Xuanyuan Throne

When Lu Chong is grievously wounded while protecting Zhang Xuan, Mo Yu helps pull the distraught teacher back toward action by reminding him of his medical ability. She then offers the most useful lead she possesses: high-ranked master teachers may be able to affect consciousness and awaken a sleeping soul. When Zhang Xuan resolves to avenge his student immediately, she does not simply follow his anger. She explains Xuanyuan Kingdom's strength, urges him to seek standing through the Master Teacher Tournament, and warns that the local Master Teacher Pavilion may favor political stability over a low-ranked outsider. Once he refuses to wait, she identifies Pavilion Crashing as a possible way to compel institutional support and makes its dangers explicit. Her advice cannot change his decision, but it turns an emotional charge into a plan informed by the forces protecting Ding Mu. (Chapters 405–413)

Mo Yu then leaves the succession training her father had planned and travels with Zhang Xuan to Xuanyuan Kingdom, believing that her identities as princess and master teacher may let her assist without becoming an immediate target. She accepts Zhang Xuan's cultivation guidance during the journey and, at his request, uses her status to investigate Ding Mu. Her report establishes that Ding Mu is sheltering in the Master Teacher Pavilion, that Pavilion Master Luo Qianhong intends to mediate, and that an imminent transfer of the throne will make vengeance politically more dangerous. After Zhang Xuan defeats Xuanyuan's ruling house, he nominates Mo Yu to prevent the kingdom from collapsing into disorder. The appointment transforms her from a subordinate kingdom's prospective heir into the first empress of a Conferred Kingdom. Zhang Xuan raises her to Zhizun realm pinnacle through cultivation impartation and orders the Steelback Winged Dragon to protect her, giving her the immediate force needed to survive a contested succession; Mo Yu, in turn, relinquishes her lingering hope of competing with him and addresses him with the formal respect due a teacher whose path she now knows she cannot follow. Consolidating Xuanyuan and Building an Empire

Mo Yu does not remain a figurehead after Zhang Xuan leaves. Over the following months, she reorganizes Xuanyuan Kingdom and brings it under her control, while Zhang Xuan's rising reputation discourages open opposition to her sovereignty. When he later selects Xuanyuan for his Empire Building examination, his intervention greatly strengthens the state: Mo Yu reaches Transcendent Mortal 5-dan, her officials advance, and more than a thousand powerful spirit beasts are placed under her exclusive command. The influx of experts, occupations, and commerce then helps Xuanyuan qualify as an empire, leaving Mo Yu with both the personal strength and institutional foundation to govern a realm far beyond the one for which her father originally prepared her. Her later response to Zhang Xuan's apparent conflict with the Master Teacher Pavilion headquarters demonstrates how she uses that authority. Faced with officials who fear that supporting him could cost Xuanyuan its new imperial rank, Mo Yu hears the competing arguments and makes the decision herself: the empire will rally those indebted to Zhang Xuan and petition on his behalf even against the headquarters. News that he has already survived removes the immediate crisis, but not the significance of her choice. The once-cautious princess who warned him to work within institutional limits is now willing to make her own state challenge the greatest institution on the continent when gratitude and justice demand it. Appearance and personality

At her first appearance, Mo Yu is twenty-three or twenty-four years old, with a slim figure, smooth fair skin, and lustrous black hair falling to her waist. She wears a light-green robe and carries an extremely cold expression that discourages strangers and admirers from approaching. As empress, she instead appears in resplendent robes and holds herself majestically on the throne. (Chapters 241 and 669)

Mo Yu is proud, competitive, and quick-tempered when her expertise or dignity is challenged, but her pride is grounded in sustained effort rather than empty status. From the age of six she spends at least two hours a day reading in Tianwu's royal collection, becoming exceptionally familiar with its holdings and unusually knowledgeable for her generation. Experience with Zhang Xuan gradually tempers her certainty: she learns to acknowledge superior ability, protect confidences, apologize through action, and offer practical counsel even when it will not be welcomed. Her feelings for him sometimes impair her judgment, but as a ruler she proves capable of restoring order and making a firm decision under political pressure. Abilities and cultivation

Mo Yu combines cultivation with several Upper Nine Paths professions. Her breadth makes her a capable adviser and ruler, but the corpus does not establish a signature combat technique of her own; her greatest leaps in raw power come through Zhang Xuan's direct intervention rather than a method she can reproduce independently.

Cultivation and master-teacher foundation

Mo Yu is already regarded as one of Tianwu's foremost young talents when she becomes a 1-star master teacher. Her Soul Depth is recorded at about 5.0, well above the minimum for the rank, and her long reading habit gives her a substantial store of institutional and practical knowledge. As a master teacher she can reason from pavilion rules, political consequences, and professional precedent—for example, identifying Pavilion Crashing as the mechanism by which Zhang Xuan might force a hostile branch to submit. The text shows her judgment and knowledge more often than formal teaching, so it does not establish a broad body of disciples or higher master-teacher rank for her. During the journey to Xuanyuan, Zhang Xuan's guidance helps Mo Yu cross into Zongshi realm. After her nomination as empress, he feeds her a lotus seed whose energy is initially too violent for her meridians and then personally guides that energy with his zhenqi, forcing successive breakthroughs to Zhizun realm pinnacle. The feat depends on both the external resource and Zhang Xuan's control; without that intervention, the seed's power nearly tears her body apart. Much later, during Xuanyuan's elevation into an empire, his further guidance raises her to Transcendent Mortal 5-dan, the latest cultivation level explicitly stated for her. Beast taming

Mo Yu earns recognition as a 1-star beast tamer after less than a year of study. She knows savage-beast temperaments and bloodline principles and patiently builds the Viridescent Eagle's goodwill through valuable resources. That bond has a clear limitation: at the Beast Hall she has not yet completed a formal contract, and Zhang Xuan's unusual taming method displaces its loyalty and makes it submit to him instead. After he returns the eagle, its evolved bloodline and improved intelligence make it an effective partner, and Mo Yu uses it to defeat Prince Fei Xuan and protect her independence from an unwanted marriage. The Steelback Winged Dragon that later guards her is not evidence that Mo Yu personally subdued a dragon-bloodline beast. Zhang Xuan compels the former Xuanyuan guardian to acknowledge her so that the new empress has enough force to deter challengers. By the time Xuanyuan becomes an empire, more than a thousand Transcendent Mortal 6-dan spirit beasts obey only Mo Yu, giving her a formidable defensive command, but their initial submission likewise comes from Zhang Xuan's arrangements. Apothecary and medical training

Mo Yu begins as a 1-star apothecary whose theoretical grounding exceeds her practical control. She can identify and process medicinal materials, but she lacks the strength to suppress a violent reaction inside a cauldron and mistimes an ingredient while forging a grade-2 pinnacle pill. Under Zhang Xuan's precise instructions she completes the pill despite the cauldron explosion, and three days of instruction raise her forging ability to the standard of the 2-star examination; she is later identified as a 2-star apothecary. She is also an apprentice physician and intends to take the physician examination after formalizing her beast-tamer status. Years of accumulated study and watching Zhang Xuan treat the Howling Firmament Beast deepen her understanding, but the corpus does not explicitly confirm that she later passes the physician examination. Her medical knowledge is therefore best treated as a useful secondary discipline rather than a demonstrated high-rank specialty. (Chapters 255–266)

Governance and statecraft

Mo Tianxue prepares Mo Yu from youth to succeed him, and she is already familiar with governing a country before becoming empress. She can evaluate marriage diplomacy, the balance between the royal family and powerful clans, and the institutional risks of acting against another kingdom's ruler. Once installed in Xuanyuan, she turns that preparation into results by reorganizing the kingdom and consolidating her authority within several months. Her rule later survives the country's rapid expansion into an empire, and she can make a decisive policy choice even when her ministers are divided and the Master Teacher Pavilion headquarters appears to be the opposing power. His guidance transforms her cultivation and political position; her response is lasting gratitude expressed through her later willingness to place the empire's standing at risk on his behalf.
