Bieronymus Hosch
Bieronymus Hosch, codenamed the Wall, is Aegis's foremost defensive Shield. His array of barriers and body-protection abilities is designed to keep allies alive against Adversaries, making him the deliberate counterpart to the Knife's concentrated offense. (Chapter 672)
Biography
Humanity's defender
Bieronymus reports through a grade-S Isolation Barrier and accepts the Left Arm's detailed security questioning despite his weary reaction. His assignment is not leadership or assassination but survival: when War retaliates after Pride's death, the Wall reaches the battlefield in time to block the attack and makes the Corruptors reconsider fighting the combined Wall and Knife. During the Trio's assault he repeatedly places himself between War, Famine, Pestilence, and other Shields, spending his Zephyx to preserve the formation while Protectors arrive. His defenses cannot end the battle alone, but they buy the time on which every offensive counterattack depends. (Chapters 672, 693, and 809–810)
Refusing command and reaching the end
After Greed's exposure, Aegis considers Bieronymus the obvious new Right Arm: he is experienced, trusted, and one of the few surviving old Shields. He declines because he considers himself a soldier who protects people directly, not an administrator who commands half of Aegis and performs as the Champion's public face. The refusal is a choice about service rather than cowardice. He instead works with contained Greed and becomes an Early Shield. Within later years he dies and is replaced; Chapter 905 confirms the death, but does not state whether age, combat, or another cause ended his life. (Chapters 834, 846, and 905)
Appearance and personality
Bieronymus is a tall, gruff man who carries two gigantic shields on his back. He can be awkward and rub the back of his head when surprised, but becomes direct and provocative in battle, openly daring War to fire. He is humble about his limits as a commander and defines himself through practical defense rather than status. (Chapters 809, 830, and 834)
Abilities and Zephyx
The Wall has an immense collection of defensive abilities, including high-grade isolation, gigantic walls and bowl-like barriers, body interception, and protection against Adversary-scale attacks. His specialization combines exceptionally well with the Knife's first-strike offense. Defense consumes finite Zephyx, and repeated attacks from Famine and Pestilence eventually make his Barrier waver; he can stall superior enemies, not remain invulnerable indefinitely. Work with Greed later advances him to Early Shield. (Chapters 672, 693, 809–810, and 846)
Relationships
- Knife: His sustained defense creates openings for her overwhelming offense, making them Aegis's strongest specialized pairing. (Chapters 672 and 693)
- Right Arm: Bieronymus serves under the office but refuses to inherit it because public leadership conflicts with his soldier's temperament. (Chapters 830 and 834)
- Politician: The Wall repeatedly interposes himself between the Politician and War during the Trio's assault. (Chapter 809)
- Greed: After Greed is contained, Bieronymus accepts controlled work with it and advances to Early Shield. (Chapters 833 and 846)
Items
- Two gigantic shields: Bieronymus carries the pair on his back and uses them as the visual and practical expression of his defensive role; neither has an individual name. (Chapter 830)
