Zhao Youlan

Zhao Youlan is the Spider Branch Holy Daughter who commands the Five Poisons assault before Demoness Zhixiang takes possession of her body.

Biography

Holy Daughter of the Spider Branch

Zhao Youlan commands the Five Poisons Tribe's Spider Branch during its campaign against the migrating Crow Divinity Tribe. She leads roughly three thousand cultivators and coordinates them with the branch's neo-demons rather than fighting as an isolated Chosen. A wooden box in her possession absorbs or accumulates black light as allied tribesmen die, turning the battlefield's casualties into the preparation for a larger attack. Her position as Holy Daughter therefore combines personal cultivation, ritual responsibility, and field command. (Chapters 438–442)

Meng Hao breaks through the army to reach her despite the Spider Branch's protection. Zhao Youlan fights and retreats under cover from Nascent Soul elders, but Meng Hao severs one of her arms and shatters the offensive's confidence. She survives the Scorpion Branch's arrival and the collapse of the larger Five Poisons operation, then remains important enough to enter the Realm of the Bridge Ruins as her people's representative. The transition shows both the cost of her defeat and the rank she retains afterward. (Chapters 443–453)

Possession in the Bridge Ruins

Within the ruins, Zhao Youlan encounters the consciousness of Demoness Zhixiang. Zhixiang first manifests through her and then takes possession of her body, using it to negotiate and cooperate with Meng Hao in the search for Immortal Divinity and the Demon Immortal Sect. Zhao Youlan is not a willing disguise: her own soul remains inside and is later seen struggling to regain control. The possession thus suspends her personal agency without erasing her, and the tension between resident soul and invader remains visible to Meng Hao. (Chapters 461–474)

Zhixiang continues using Zhao Youlan's body through the ancient Demon Immortal Sect journey, but eventually separates and returns it. She leaves Zhao Youlan at the great circle of the Nascent Soul stage, a substantial rise from her earlier condition, and entrusts the still-unconscious woman to Meng Hao rather than discarding the vessel. Zhao Youlan briefly awakens during the Tenth Wang Patriarch's attack, only to be swept away by the river of stars. Her last supplied-text appearance is therefore survival and separation: the body and soul are her own again, but her later destination is not established. (Chapters 629–630)

Appearance and personality

Zhao Youlan is presented as a striking young Holy Daughter whose bearing remains composed enough to direct thousands in battle. After Meng Hao severs her arm, the injury becomes the most concrete change to her appearance. Later descriptions are complicated because the same body is being animated by Zhixiang, whose expressions and behavior should not automatically be attributed to Zhao Youlan.

Before the possession, Zhao Youlan is controlled, proud, and tactically severe. She accepts the deaths powering the wooden box and continues directing the Spider Branch while Meng Hao tears through its defenses. At the same time, she is capable of recognizing danger and retreating rather than throwing away her life for appearances. The struggle of her soul against Zhixiang demonstrates persistence under a form of captivity that strength alone cannot immediately break.

Abilities and cultivation

Great-circle Nascent Soul cultivation

After Zhixiang leaves her body, Zhao Youlan is explicitly at the great circle of the Nascent Soul stage. The text does not establish how much of that advancement comes from her own prior cultivation and how much from the body's experiences under Zhixiang, so the result should not be described as a technique she deliberately mastered. (Chapter 629)

Spider Branch command

As Holy Daughter she directs three thousand cultivators, their elders, and associated neo-demons. Her authority lets her coordinate layered pursuit and defensive formations across a mass battlefield. (Chapters 438–445)

Wooden-box ritual

The box gathers black light as members of the allied force die. Its rising power is linked to battlefield casualties and appears intended as a prepared trump card, but Meng Hao's breakthrough prevents Zhao Youlan from converting it into a decisive victory. (Chapters 438–445)

Personal combat and survival

She can fight amid Nascent Soul-level conflict and withdraw under coordinated protection after losing an arm. Her survival through the Crow Divinity counterattack and the Bridge Ruins demonstrates resilience, though not parity with Meng Hao.

Soul resistance

Zhao Youlan's consciousness survives Zhixiang's occupation and tries to force its way back into control. This resistance does not expel the stronger invader, but it proves that possession never fully consumes or replaces her soul. (Chapters 468–474)

  • Meng Hao: Battlefield enemy who maims her, then interacts with her possessed body.
  • Zhao Chunmu: Scorpion Branch Holy Son and fellow Five Poisons leader.

Items

  • Wooden box: A Spider Branch ritual object that stores increasing black light as allied cultivators die. Zhao Youlan carries and prepares it during the attack on the Crow Divinity Tribe. (Chapters 438–445)
