Sha Jiudong is a sand-wreathed 9-Essences Paragon of the Vast Expanse School. He is one of the school's senior experts and a regular participant in its expeditions to Patriarch Vast Expanse's necropolis.

Biography

Senior Paragon of the Vast Expanse School

Sha Jiudong is one of the Vast Expanse School's established nine-Essences powers, recognizable by the sandstorm that continuously surrounds him. He first becomes individually important during Meng Hao's conflict with the school's old Paragons. When the Sect Leader considers intervening, Sha Jiudong materializes beside him and blocks the move, helping preserve the school-wide rules under which the combatants must settle their own confrontation. The decision is not yet loyalty to Meng Hao; it is a senior cultivator's insistence that the institution not overturn its own contest once the result becomes uncomfortable. (Chapter 1426)

He joins the successive expeditions into Patriarch Vast Expanse's necropolis and sees Meng Hao grow from a suspicious Ninth Paragon into the group's indispensable guide. Like Jin Yunshan, Sha Jiudong initially measures Meng Hao through the hierarchy of the school. Repeated displays of combat strength and control over the necropolis force him to abandon that assumption. By the time the final route opens, he avoids standing in Meng Hao's way and treats the younger cultivator's understanding as the expedition's best chance of survival. (Chapters 1427–1491)

Door to the ninth land mass

During the final expedition, Sha Jiudong crosses the necropolis while Allheaven's will actively interferes. At the sealed door leading to the ninth land mass, individual force is insufficient. Sha Jiudong turns fully into a sandstorm and pours his cultivation into the joint effort to force the passage. His transformation supplies sustained pressure over a wide surface, complementing the concentrated attacks of the other Paragons. The door opens only through the group's combined power and Meng Hao's leadership; Sha Jiudong's contribution is essential but not singular. (Chapters 1526–1530)

Once safely on the ninth land mass, Sha Jiudong thanks Meng Hao without the evasiveness that marked the school's earlier dealings. He promises that, if he Transcends, he will help settle Meng Hao's grudge against the Immortal God and Devil Realm Continents. The pledge reflects a genuine change in allegiance born from received aid rather than fear alone. His own attempt at Transcendence fails when Allheaven disrupts the process, exposing the difference between reaching nine Essences and escaping Allheaven's control. (Chapters 1530–1531)

Sha Jiudong survives to witness Meng Hao accomplish what the other Paragons could not. He kneels when Meng Hao Transcends and later joins the Vast Expanse School's mobilization under the Demon Sovereign. During the campaign against the Immortal God Continent, he helps intercept continent-scale attacks and joins Jin Yunshan against a peak expert wielding a three-thousand-strand horsetail whisk. War against the Mountains and Seas

Thirty thousand years after Meng Hao defeats Allheaven's internal clone, Sha Jiudong emerges from seclusion extremely old, rotting, and vastly stronger. He enters a new war on the Vast Expanse School's side and personally kills numerous 9-Essences cultivators of the Mountain and Sea Realm, turning the campaign in his school's favor. His mixed expression shows that memory of Meng Hao has not vanished, but institutional allegiance and accumulated ambition still carry him into an invasion of Meng Hao's legacy. (Chapter 1595)

The moment Sha Jiudong crosses into the Nine Mountains and Nine Seas, the realm itself attacks. He initially begs Meng Hao to spare him, revealing that the fear formed before Transcendence remains intact even after thirty thousand years of growth. Realizing that only Meng Hao's unattended treasure is responding makes the defeat more complete, not less: an image of a mountain and sea crushes him into bloody paste and destroys body and soul in one strike. His death routs the Vast Expanse School and demonstrates the decisive limit of cultivation that merely borders on Transcendence. (Chapter 1595)

Appearance and personality

He appears as a man permanently wreathed in sand, making the storm both his visual identity and the outward sign of his Dao. When he exerts himself fully, the distinction between man and storm disappears.

Sha Jiudong is cautious, rule-conscious, and less personally vindictive than several of the school's senior Paragons. He does not immediately trust Meng Hao, but neither does he insist on hostility after evidence changes. Gratitude matters to him: reaching the ninth land mass converts pragmatic cooperation into a sincere promise of future aid. His failed Transcendence also reveals humility, as he can kneel before Meng Hao's success instead of treating another's achievement as an insult to his own long cultivation.

That gratitude is not permanent loyalty to Meng Hao's descendants. After millennia of separation, Sha Jiudong fights for his own school against the Mountain and Sea Realm. His dying terror shows that he never forgot Meng Hao's power even while choosing a course that violated the spirit of his earlier pledge.

Abilities and cultivation

Nine-Essences Paragon cultivation

Sha Jiudong stands at the summit beneath Transcendence and can participate directly in battles and formations that would erase ordinary cultivators. Nine Essences still leave him subject to Allheaven's suppression, which is why his attempt to Transcend can be interrupted. (Chapters 1530–1531)

Sandstorm transformation

He disperses his body into an enormous storm of sand. The form expands his area of influence, lets him apply continuous grinding force, and becomes the medium through which he contributes all of his cultivation to the ninth-land-mass door. (Chapter 1530)

Environmental pressure

The storm can obscure space and bear down across a broad region rather than striking at only one point. In group operations it serves as sustained containment while other Paragons deploy more focused Essence attacks.

Necropolis endurance

Sha Jiudong survives the deathly environments, hostile constructs, and Allheaven pressure encountered across repeated expeditions. This is a combination of nine-Essences cultivation, group formations, and disciplined withdrawal rather than immunity to the necropolis.

Transcendence attempt

He reaches the point of attempting to step beyond nine Essences, proving that his cultivation has accumulated to the necessary threshold. Allheaven's intervention causes failure, showing that sufficient energy alone cannot sever the creator's control. (Chapter 1531)

Near-Transcendent late cultivation

Thirty thousand years of seclusion take Sha Jiudong beyond ordinary 9-Essences battle strength and let him slaughter multiple Paragons alone. He still has not achieved true Transcendence: Meng Hao's Mountain and Sea Realm can identify him as an invader, pursue him after retreat, and erase him with a single manifestation. The contrast supplies the clearest mechanical boundary in his arc—enormous accumulated power does not create an independent Daosource or immunity to a Transcendence treasure. (Chapter 1595)
