Matriarch Phoenix is an ancient Black Sieve Sect discarnate soul placed inside Xu Qing. Meng Hao reverses the possession with Demon Sealer blood, allowing Xu Qing to consume the Matriarch and retain her black phoenix power while deceiving the sect.

Biography

Unstable possession

Meng Hao first perceives Phoenix through the Eighth Demon Sealing Hex as a blurry, deathly woman standing behind Xu Qing. The ancient soul controls Xu Qing's voice and outward behavior while the host's own soul sleeps inside black mist. The possession is not self-sustaining: both souls are fading, because Phoenix needs the living host but cannot fully stabilize the forced union. This mutual danger is why the Black Sieve Sect seeks alchemical treatment rather than simply allowing the ancestor to suppress Xu Qing indefinitely. (Chapter 256)

Soul Refining Pill

The sect treats Phoenix as a Grand Matriarch of exceptional seniority and sends her host last among thirteen failing possessions to receive Meng Hao's Soul Refining Pill. Meng Hao secretly adds Demon Sealer blood and the persistence of his own will to Xu Qing's dose. Phoenix distrusts modern medicine and senses danger, but the visible recovery of the other returned souls and her host's continuing decay leave refusal equally fatal. She consumes the pill because survival requires accepting a process she cannot fully evaluate. (Chapter 258)

Reversal and inherited power

When the pill dissolves, Meng Hao's blood suppresses Phoenix and awakens Xu Qing. The original host consumes and fuses the discarnate Matriarch, regaining control while continuing to present herself publicly as Grand Matriarch Phoenix. The deception protects Xu Qing from a sect that would otherwise recognize the failed possession, and it leaves her with access to the ancient soul's cultivation power. Phoenix ceases to act as an independent consciousness, but her image and authority remain embedded in Xu Qing's techniques. (Chapter 259)

At Rebirth Cave, a phoenix-like female face appears within Xu Qing's black power. Ji Hongdong's Ji bloodline forces the ancient soul-image to bow and submit, weakening Xu Qing until Meng Hao intervenes. The encounter shows that absorbing Phoenix transfers both strength and inherited vulnerabilities: Xu Qing owns the power, yet the old soul's place within ancient bloodline hierarchies can still be exploited. Appearance and personality

In soul form Phoenix is a blurry female figure surrounded by black death Qi. Through Xu Qing she appears cold, grim, and authoritative. She regards contemporary medicinal pills with ancient disdain and expects deference as a Grand Matriarch. Her final independent choice is nevertheless pragmatic: she risks Meng Hao's treatment because continued possession is already destroying both herself and her host.

Abilities and cultivation

Discarnate possession

Phoenix can overlay her consciousness onto a living host, control speech and movement, and suppress the host soul inside black mist. The process depends on the host remaining alive; Xu Qing is not an empty body, and the two souls fade together when the possession destabilizes. This dependency is the key limit that allows Meng Hao's pill to reverse the hierarchy instead of merely expelling one soul. (Chapters 256–259)

Black phoenix power

Her power manifests as dense black Qi and the image of a female or phoenix-like face. After fusion, Xu Qing can draw on that force as her own, so Phoenix's cultivation becomes an inherited reservoir rather than a separate ally. Ancient authority and vulnerabilities

Other returned souls and contemporary attendants treat Phoenix as a Grand Matriarch, giving her institutional authority beyond the condition of her host body. Demon Sealer blood bypasses that status and suppresses her soul from within the pill. Ji bloodline pressure can also compel the absorbed soul-image to bow, transferring submission into weakness for Xu Qing.
