Elder Fan is the wine-loving Nascent Soul elder who leads the Solitary Sword Sect delegation to the Song Clan's search for a husband for Song Jia. Beneath his disorderly appearance and loud humor, he is an experienced representative who can admit the limits of senior cultivation when the younger generation confronts an unusual Dao trial.

Biography

Journey to the Song Clan

Elder Fan arrives at the Solitary Sword Sect's teleportation portal carrying a wine gourd and an enormous black sword. When Chen Fan asks to include the unaffiliated Meng Hao, Elder Fan accepts immediately instead of demanding proof of status. He jokes that the disciples should win Song Jia's hand and add glory to the sect, setting an informal tone for a mission that is also a competition among the Southern Domain's powers. (Chapter 185)

He leads the group through long-distance teleportation and joins the other Nascent Soul representatives at the Song Clan. Their barbed reminiscences make clear that these elders have known one another through earlier rivalries and gatherings. Elder Fan's irreverence does not prevent him from performing the diplomatic role: his presence authorizes the younger Solitary Sword cultivators and places the sect on equal footing with the other delegations. The World Tree trial

As conflict gathers around Meng Hao, Elder Fan remains among the senior observers rather than intervening in every dispute. He watches the World Tree trial open and joins the elders' wager over which Chosen will advance farthest. Drinking and bantering with Eccentric Song, he supports the Solitary Sword disciples while also following Meng Hao's unexpected progress. (Chapters 189–194)

The trial becomes more than a race when the paths reveal different Dao Hearts. Elder Fan openly acknowledges that even Nascent Soul cultivators find the Dao Heart mysterious. That admission is important: his rank gives him power and authority, but not automatic understanding of every cultivation choice. He witnesses Meng Hao reach the summit, cause the Sublime Spirit Scripture to appear, and reject the nine paths offered by the tree. Meng Hao's refusal turns the gathering's supposed marriage trial into an assertion of a self-created path, leaving Elder Fan and the other seniors to reconsider the junior they had treated as an outsider. Appearance and personality

Elder Fan is an old man with long white hair, a ruddy face, and a pronounced brandy nose. His voluminous Daoist robe is wrinkled and messy. He smells strongly of alcohol, keeps a gourd close at hand, and carries a huge pitch-black sword on his back.

He is loud, jovial, and irreverent, but his humor is not evidence of carelessness. He welcomes Meng Hao on Chen Fan's recommendation, handles the delegation's senior representation, and observes the trials without impulsively overriding the younger cultivators. His willingness to state that Nascent Soul experts do not fully understand the Dao Heart gives him an unusual intellectual humility.
